About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Bunkers like concrete
Narry a grain of actual sand in the bunkers, just hard pan dirt. Caused skipped long shots instead of explosions. Fairway bare spots on every hole.

Solid track, great price
Price was right on ($55) and my son and I played as a twosome on Monday at 7:33am while visiting from Phoenix. Greens are in good shape, most are in great shape. Fairways super green and bunkers are easy to get out of (packed tight wet sand).
The dude in the pro shop was uber welcoming, gave us a bunch of course tips and went out of his way to get us a bag of ice to keep drinks cold, he made the day for us!

8some of knuckleheads
Course was in some of the best conditions in a long while. Only annoying part was the 8some of young knuckleheads behind us. They were loud, obnoxious, driving carts on greens and tee boxes, leaving carts in reverse do sound alerts on to mess with others in their group. it was an absolute joke.

Not worth the money
This course was decent at best. Solid layout, the idea is there it’s just not executed. Pace of play was good, staff was great.
Unfortunately the condition of the course is where it falls short. $80 when it should be $50 at most.
Fun time, price doesn’t reflect course quality.

Great track, with a competitive feel.
Pace of play was a little slow, but not debilitating. Course was well designed and forces player to select best club for the best outcome not just the longest club in the bag. Condition was good, with small areas for improvement in some fairways, bunkers were inconsistent in quality and feel, however my biggest gripe was the lack of courtesy on the greens, could be A1 if folks fixed freaking divots!!! All in all course will be added to my schedule as a monthly play.

Challenging course, but not worth the greens fees.
This course is truly challenging — any golfer will enjoy the long par 5s, the tricky approach shots, the large sand traps, and wide greens. The holes play much longer then what the scorecard says.
Pace of play was solid, they didn’t try and cram the tee sheet on a Sunday afternoon. We didn’t have to wait at any tee boxes and could play at our own pace.
Course conditions can’t justify the spend. Bunkers had no sand in them which made getting out very difficult. The fairways were covered in weeds, brown patches, and dirt. This is the greatest negative of the course.
Overall, good course to, at minimum give a try, but only on Hot Offers to avoid the inflated green fees. Good if you’re looking for a challenging course, but don’t expect the price tag to reflect the course.

Course looks the best it’s looked in years
The rain did this course very well. Fairways look really good and the greens are in good shape for how much traffic this course gets. Seems like they are starting to take care of this place again. Also, the cart girl is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen in my life, so be ready to drink a lot lol. Overall, for the money I think it’s a good value.

Truly Challenging.........
gotta keep it in the fairways to do good here...you'll find it a rough go off the beaten path. Greens were good, but comon...fix your marks eh.....they had a worker fixin' em with a tool but ya gotta help em out tho........the 18th has got to be a par 5, really.......not many folks can get there in 2 i bet......if ya wanna challenge your game, give Carlton Oaks a go..........

Best conditions in a few years
My opinion is this a top 3 public layout in SD, however conditions are typically in the bottom 5. Greens and fairways are pretty decent right from all the rain this year, hope they can maintain it with the summer heat.
If they can improve rough and bunkers I would play here more often and be willing to pay more.
Pace of play is hit or miss here but typical for SD at 4-5hrs on a weekend

san diego vaca
course was not in very good shape. tee boxes very uneven. fairways a little rough, could be in fairway but have a lie like in the rough or worse. greens were pretty good just had a lot of unrepaired ball marks.
