The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Still a dump
The 7th green is the worst of any course in the area. The 8th tee box is basically unplayable. Greens are quite fast. Only play here if you get a hot deal and every other course is booked
Bunkers on the greens…
As you can tell with the title, the greens are not maintained. Not even trying. Tee boxes are basically sand. The conditions are so bad, I would never want my worst enemy go to this place. The course is a harder one with the raised greens, but what’s the point if the greens are non puttable.
The Claw at USF
Tee boxes were in bad shape some no grass just sand/dirt, greens were bad some very little grass , some with craters , , tee box markers were missing in action on some holes, fairways were in fair condition, no restrooms on course just a porter like john at the turn but it was clean with running water, no water on course,, staff was nice, pro-shop was like a pod with doors and windows, just a course to get a workout for the price not for serious golfers.
Awful greens
Several of the greens simply aren't puttable. Expected thin fairways and thin tee boxes (which was the case), but not grassless rutty greens. But the weather was nice and the pace of play was good. Worth $15. Not worth the $30/each that we played.
What a disappointment
I have been playing at the Claw for many years but havent played in several years due to deteriorating conditions. Decided to give it a try today; what a disappointment. Some of the the tee boxes were bare sand; the fairways were fair to average. A few of the greens were ok, but some were partly bare dirt and deep divots that re-directed the ball. Pro shop is at a trailer as are the restrooms, as the original club house and cart barn are literally overgrown and falling apart. Quit playing after 12 or 13 due to the condition. Should be closed for a complete renovation or closed down as it is certainly not worth the money any more. I used to love this course as it is a great layout and loaded with great trees and wildlife. Very sad.
horrible front nine - descent back nine
the course had almost no good grass including the greens which had pot holes, dirt, etc. Will not play again.
RIP Golf
What a great course, havent played in in a decade. I played it thousands of rounds from 1990 to2010.
This course is dead. Dead trees, dead fairways, dead greens. So sad !
Terrible conditions
This is possibly the worst course conditions I have ever played. Every T Box was nothing but sand, barely able to get a T to stand up, fairways were average to Ok but the greens were like the surface of the moon. Dry patches of dirt and weeds. Impossible to put a straight line, the ball bounces all over the place.
Cow Pasture
Horrible condition! Worst Course i have played in a long time.
DONT PLAY HERE!!
This course is in the worst shape I’ve ever seen a place asking $48 bucks to play. Most tee boxes are like hitting out of a sandbox. Greens are terrible, weeds, patchy with some having less than 40% grass on them. Seems like they have just let this course go to complete trash. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DONT PLAY HERE.
Cow Pasture
Worst course I ever played. No water on course. Not much grass anywhere, even tee boxes. HORRIBLE!
Horrible
I have played about 15 different golf courses in the area this past winter and this one is by far the worst maintained course.total waste of time and money
Very Disappointing
First the staff was very friendly! They were the highlight of the course. I feel bad for proshop worker. He was stuck in an overly packed trailer behind merchandise. There was only one exit. This is a safety hazard and code violation. The reason for the tailor is that the proshop, restaurant, and cart shack were condemned. Now for the course. USF has not put a dime into this course in a long time. Most tee boxes had no grass. Most greens were in poor condition. Most had 20% to 50% fungus on them. One green had chemical burns. I could continue to ramble on how poor the conditions were but it seems to me that USF is looking to close the course. That would be a shame since it’s got one of the best layouts in the area. Needless to say we won’t be back Y time soon unless news of revitalization is completed.
Round at The Claw
We were glad to find a mid-morning tee time for two under a hundred bucks. We were disappointed with the tee boxes and greens, as many of them were in poor condition. Some of the tee boxes were just dirt.
The pace of play and layout of the course was good. On a positive note, I hit my first ever eagle.
Probably won’t be coming back to this course unless they fix the greens, as we barely had a chance to make a putt with the irregularities.
