Lakewood Golf Club

About
Lakewood Golf Club is one of the South's premier golf destinations. Opened in 1961, the course has hosted the New Orleans Open 26 times over the years. Beautiful cypress and oak trees frame the golf course, providing a beautiful backdrop throughout the round. When Ron Garl renovated the course in 2009 he managed to obtain its original character while modernizing the layout with new fairways, tee boxes, and greens. Strategically placed bunkers and fairway contouring were also added. Lakewood Golf Club is owned by the New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund and as a tribute to New Orleans Firefighters, the final hole was redesigned and renamed "Fire in the Hole." Called so because the traps are arranged in a set of flames against a backdrop of red sand. You won't find anything like the bunkering on this par 4.

Potential
Pros:
Fun layout
Pro shop guy was nice
Snack shop in convenient location
Cons:
Tee boxes and greens need attention
A little overpriced without a hot deal rate
Course has amazing potential but needs some TLC. Greens are in rough shape. Staff was amazing and pace of play was excellent.
Course in good shape, greens not
Lots of weeds on the greens made it impossible to make a putt and get any spin on any approach shots. The rest of the course was in great shape
Not up to par
Lakewood is one of my favorite courses in the New Orleans area and I have been playing they reopened.
This is probably the worst condition I have seen the course. The tee boxes were sandy and uneven, the fairways were shaggy, rough was weedy and greens were bumpy.
It was similar to Bretchel before it closed.
I really hope it can make a comeback before it’s too late.
The staff was still friendly though.
In horrible shape
I played this course for the first time in a couple of years. It is horrible shape. The greens have tufts of weeds all over them. They are very close to unputtable. The fairways have invasive grass scattered all over. The tee boxes are not much better, and it is not even cheap. I paid $60 for an afternoon on Sunday. Save your money. Maybe they will fix it.
Greens Need Major Work
This course was a staple of quality golf in New Orleans for many years when it first re-opened a few decades ago. Now it simply needs some more care from the staff. The greens are mostly unputtable and were like that for a good part of last season as well. There are municipal courses in the city with much better greens and that is just a sign that the course is not doing enough to maintain them.
Very playable, some cool holes. Greens rolled well but had small weeds, didn’t affect too much. Friendly staff. Pace of play behind a 5 and 4some was terrible
Ok course but not sure worth $70+ dollars on a bad weather dayday
Ok course but not sure worth $70+ dollars on a bad weather day. Course was fun to play and staff was super nice .. cart
Not sure it’s worth $70 bucks but was fun to play
Not sure it’s worth $70 bucks but was fun to play. Was in from out of town and wasted to stay close to downtown.. greens & tee boxes could be better for the money.
Staff was great, beverages and food selection for a round was great. The driving range, chipping greens, and putting greens are in awful shape. The fairways were manageable but the greens need a lot of work. Weeds growing in the greens so putts are hopping all over the place.
If they would take and put some time and money the course could be really nice.
Not worth it. Poor conditions. Don’t recommend
This course is only worth $10 round.
Tees very rough shape
Greens poor. Overseeded. Different grass growing in places.
Sandy traps poor
Fairways bare and some places chunky
Disappointing that this course is not maintained
Could be a lot better
Course layout is awesome — greens are extremely dry and sandy.
Tee boxes are garbage.
They really need to fix their irrigation system because man was that dry and inconsistent
Leading with the negatives — positives:
Layout is awesome
Staff is great
Price was good
Was fun but could have been so much better
Overpriced
Friendly handicappers course. Wide open. 5.5/10 course
Not in its normal shape
Typically Lakewood is in great shape with regard to tee boxes, fairways and greens. The tee boxes had some bare, uneven spots. The fairways were a little bare but I attribute this to a lack of rain this year. The greens were fast, which I like, but had several sandy spots.
The staff is always great and I really like the layout.
Did a golf trip to New Orleans. Learned on the way that the south has been experiencing a drought… and it showed. To be fair I am not going to rate or comment on the course conditions. Instead, given the rest of my experience I am choosing to assume that with some rain the course conditions would be fantastic, and I do look forward to returning one day to find out.
Things I Liked
- Really great customer service. The gentleman checking me in was very helpful in getting me ready to get out and golf.
- The greens were in good shape and rolled very fair.
- Holes #17 and #18 are demanding. Everything before that I would consider to be golfer friendly.
- The fleur-de-lis and fire flame bunkers are unique.
Things I Did Not Like
- Non-resident rates. Though I would rather pay the course directly, that level of mark-up led to me retreat and purchase an online deal.
Thing Important to Me
- Very walkable. I wouldn’t take a cart to play this course.
- Cool branded ball marker.
- There were water coolers out on the course.
