About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6878 yards
Slope 133
Rating 74.0

The Clipper/Galleon Course at Shipyard Golf Club, which combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property, creates an exciting combination of long fairways and perilous hazards. Clipper/Galleon has a rating of 74, with a slope of 133 from the championship tees.

With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. Designed by George Cobb and built in 1970, Clipper requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.

Galleon, the original nine holes, meanders through large oak and tall pines. Accurate placement of approach shots into heavily guarded greens is necessary on this nine.

Good value for golf on the island. New superintendent has done a great job. I always avoided this course due to bad reviews. Saw the good reviews and decided to try it and was not disappointed. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

It’s okay

Pace was fast. Greens were in good enough shape. Navigation was straightforward around the course. They charge $65 for club rental which was almost the cost of the round. Seems like better values could be found.

Alligators for Real

Enjoyable day of golf ⛳

Alligators were ever present and stayed in place. They added to the fun and did result in speedy shots at times. We finished 30 minutes early.

Put This Course on your Hilton Head List

This was our favourite course on Hilton Head. It was certainly challenging enough, with great nature, birds and lots of gators from small ones to hearing a giant one roar or bellow! Quite impressive and alarming , apparently a mating call. If you want an enjoyable golfing challenge rolled in with nature, this is the course for you!

Decent

Greens rolled well! Layout was fair, but lots of doglegs which take driver away. Was cart path only on the back and didnt see any reason for it (Fairways were nice and dry). Overall conditions were very good. Guys in the clubhouse and cart girl were friendly, but starter not so much.

Shipyard Golf Course

My wife and I played there for our Anniversary which happened to also be Mothers Day. - in general course conditions OK but expected better for the price- fairways patchy and dry - greens dry and sandy / some much better than others. Interesting that with all the rain, course must have limited to top soil base to retain moisture. Nice staff- very good Pro Shop. Had a lot of fun. Conditions did not affect our games . Wouldnteturn, even though there are other courses in the Island that have more beauty and better conditions. MAB Sterling Heights, MI

Course not in good shape

Overall the course was not in good shape. The fairways and green aprons were completely devoid of grass in some areas and very spotty in others as were the tee boxes. The greens were a bit better with sand traps well maintained. The worst part was the rudest, smug starter I have ever encountered anywhere and this was not just my opinion. He is a poor representative for the golf experience at Shipyard, as someone in every group has to come in contact with him to start your round. The rest of the staff were overall friendly but the starter needs to be replaced.
