If you come to Arizona to play desert golf, forget about Ocotillo. Ocotillo is a refreshing change of pace from most of the Valley's courses precisely because it isn't surrounded by desert.

The White Course is the most unique of the three. It has only one par 5, and the water is a factor on just five of the holes. But it also has the best hole on the property -- the 479-yard, par-4 ninth, which used to be an easy par 5 but is now a treacherous finishing touch.

The Gold nine is a devilish test and not just because water comes into play on six of the holes. The greens have a lot of slope in them and are difficult to read. And some pin placements are brutal; hit a downhill putt two feet past the

hole, and it might roll down into a swale and 30 feet by. Uphill putts, on the other hand, are extremely difficult to get to the hole, if for no other reason than Ocotillo's greens aren't as fast as some of the Valley's marquee desert courses.

Incompetent

I have now played this course twice in the last year. Both times the course was in average shape and the pace of play was terrible with no Marshall present. But the worst thing about this course is their inability to process my credit card payments properly. The first time the card was rejected so I had to go to an offsite ATM to get cash and pay them costing me gas and ATM fees. The personnel at the desk did not know how to use the credit card machine properly. This time the machine is down so they have to process the payment the old way by paper slip and proceed to charge me twice. I will never be back due to their obvious incompetence.

WARNING! Blue course being prepped for overseed.

I have had a lot of issues with this course since Phil's camp took over.

Positives:

We played the Gold course and it was in excellent condition considering how dry this summer has been. The White course also looked to be in great condition, however we did not play this side.

Always a challenging and fun layout for each course.

Negatives;

The Blue course is being prepped for overseed and Ocotillo did not notify us prior. It was basically playing off of concrete. Beware hole # 6 on your approach shot, the green is very hard and your ball will roll through and off the backside into the water. Three of our players did this and their approaches had landed on the front of the green. The difference in quality for the Blue course versus the White and Gold is staggering, it was like playing two completely different rounds of golf. You do not get to choose thew course you play on Golfnow, it's luck of the draw morning of the round.

Also, historically range balls had always been included in your rate, that is no longer the case.

This will be the last time I play at this course until major improvements are made.

Missing Troon

Been playing Ocotillo for the past 10 years and I’ll have to say course conditions have noticeably declined since Michelson’s group took over ownership and operations. Fairways continue to be patchy throughout the year. Bunkers were hit and miss...some with wet but loose sand, some very compact. Greens today were at least in decent shape especially for this time of year. Props to the entire staff for their friendliness which helps offset the overall conditions. Ocotillo’s challenging layout and pristine conditions is what kept us coming back year in and year out. Hopefully, things will get better but until then....

The fairways are in very bad shape. They shouldn’t charge as much when the course is in such bad shape.
