Ocotillo Golf Club - Gold/Blue
About
The Ocotillo Golf Resort sits on 185 acres and features lush contoured fairways that flow gently amid patches of mature trees, vibrant flower beds, pretty waterfalls and numerous lakes.
The Gold nine is a devilish test and not just because water comes into play on six of the holes. The greens have a lot of slope in them and are difficult to read. And some pin placements are brutal; hit a downhill putt two feet past the
hole, and it might roll down into a swale and 30 feet by. Uphill putts, on the other hand, are extremely difficult to get to the hole, if for no other reason than Ocotillo's greens aren't as fast as some of the Valley's marquee desert courses.
Two holes stand out on the Gold: No. 5 is a 212-yard par 3 with water running down the entire left side; and No. 9 is a 468-yard par 4 with a carry over water from the tee -- water that dissects the fairway about 50 yards short of the green and water left to the green. Par there is a great score.
Ocotillo's Blue Course is a watery grave; water comes into play on eight of the nine holes. It's not overly long but there's so much water the length becomes irrelevant. The best hole may be No. 1, a 590-yard par 5. Big hitters are faced with the classic risk-reward: Do they lay-up on their second shot or try to fly a tributary that splits the fairway about 50 yards short of the green?

Nice property. Maintenance playing catch-up
Well funded landscaping, cart paths and water mangment throughout the course. Visually interesting but funky layout that would be fun in good conditions. Surprised there was not GPS on carts given the number of blind water hazards. Conditions were much worse, tee to green, than expected for the price; unlevel tee boxes, inconsistently soaked and dry fairways (some hold shots and others are dry and thin down to blind water hazards), and thin compacted sand in bunkers. Greens were blotchy with many bare spots and had recently been painted/treated, punched and top dressed. For a local point of reference, most area courses are in transition preparing for summer heat. However, nearby courses and ALL the city courses are in much better shape.
Fun. Day
While place is great. Green were recently top dressed so weren’t perfect but a great track and we will be back
Needs maintenance
Tee boxes are covers with debris from trees. Putting green were a mixture of seeds sand very little grass. Grabbed a tank to smooth out a bunker and fiberglass was embedded in my hand the rest of the day.
A bit disappointing
The greens are in rough shape, putting thru other than grass. The play was slow at a +5 hour round, sad. Fairways in decent condition but lots of dry and dead areas for as much water that they have available. Better options out there.
Late afternoon golf
The greens on a few holes were pretty burnt up and pace of play wasn’t great but overall I like playing here and will return
Ocotillo golf course review
I've played this course many times over the years and it's still one of my favourites. Great layout with plenty of challenging shots. You can play safe or play risk/reward shots on most holes
A great test of golf for all levels.
Pricey
$166, waiting for rates to drop, greens good but not much grass left on them, fairways over watered and some areas with burnt grass. Now I remember why I hadn’t been there in a while. Pork sandwich was really good and so where the sliders. Cart ladies super nice!
Highway robbery
I understand peak season and golf prices in Arizona are just what they are but $160 to play here with fairway grass dead, bunkers made of mud and greens lacking grass…and also made of mud. Not sure what’s going on here but it’s obvious they are not using the over priced green fees to put back into the course.
Way over priced
The greens were more sand than grass and were in horrible shape. I can’t believe they charged $170 for course. The last time I played it, several years ago, it was in great shape. Not sure what happened but I don’t recommend playing here.
Greens Slope and Lotsa Water
Always make a trip to this course when in Phoenix/Chandler area. Very friendly staff from bag drop, to Pro Shop, and the restaurant, with great service. Pricy when compared to being accustomed to Midwest golf courses, but competitive with all Arizona courses. The greens felt a little like they were going through some kind of seasonal transition change and were a little bumby and slow. But, with the slope of many of the greens, this course would be extremely challenging if the greens become smoother and fast. It's one of those places that you need to play a few times to figure out your targets, and memorize distances to water...because water is in play on several holes. The Carts do not have GPS. This was very disappointing for a Club of this caliber of golf to blow-off what should be a standard in Carts. Have your own GPS watch to make all I've described about this course easier to play, because you really need to know what is ahead of you. Practice range was mats only and even when stepping in front of the mats a few feet to hit a few tee balls, it was like standing in a sand trap - no grass. All said, Ocotillo is a must play with beautiful homes, Palm trees, and no desert cactus rocky waste areas like 80% of AZ courses offer.
Thank you for making Ocotillo Golf Club part of your trips to the Phoenix/Chandler area, we appreciate the continued support. It’s great to hear our team across bag drop, the Golf Shop, and the restaurant took good care of you and that you enjoy the layout and overall setting.
We appreciate the honest feedback on course conditions, GPS availability, and the practice facilities. Seasonal transitions can impact green speeds and smoothness, and your comments are helpful as we continue to improve.
Thanks again for the detailed review, we hope to welcome you back again soon.
Annoying
The course itself was in pretty good condition and a nice layout. Greens were in average condition, but would have expected better for $180 greens fee. I played from the tips and it was plenty challenging. Would have definitely played again, but the rangers on the course completely ruined the experience for me. I’m a single digit handicap and can play 18 by myself walking in like 2.5 hours. However, I played as a single and got put with a guy who brought out two of his clients. They were all below average golfers so we were playing a bit on the slower side, about a 4.5 hour pace. After a rough hole, the group ahead of us got about a hole ahead and they stayed there the entire rest of the round. The group behind us was an entire hole back from hole 2 on. So, literally no one in front of us or pushing us from behind the entire day. HOWEVER, the two rangers on the course thought it was important to keep up pace of play and hovered over us. They stopped to give us the pace of play talk 6 different times in the first 13 holes. The second to last time we were told if we didn’t catch the group in front of us, they were going to force us to skip the next par three. In my 30+ years of playing golf I’ve never experienced this, but my understanding from the guys I was playing with this is a regular occurrence. I get that nobody wants to play 6 hour rounds, but it’s crazy to me that 4.5 hours is completely unacceptable. If that’s the case, they need to stop letting 30 handicap players on the course. If you’re going to take their money and let them play, there is no way they’re playing in 4 hours. So bottom line…If you want to go enjoy a round with buddies and can’t play in under 4 hours, don’t play here. There are so many other options. If you are a single, don’t go at all. You’re just going to get annoyed by a few rangers being the pace of play police, when you have zero control over the people you’re playing with.
Thank you for your feedback—we’re glad you enjoyed the course layout and conditions. During peak season, maintaining pace of play is essential to keep rounds flowing for all guests, but we apologize that the repeated interruptions impacted your experience. We’ll be addressing this with our team to ensure a better balance moving forward.
Not Worth the money
Course was just ok .Rangers did not speed up play until the 14 th hole. Five hour round in sweltering heat.
Course is a shadow of what it used to be
Thanks for your feedback—we’re sorry your round didn’t meet expectations. A five-hour pace, especially in the heat, isn’t the experience we aim to provide, and we’ll be addressing ranger coverage and pace-of-play management with our team. We also appreciate your comments on course conditions and are actively working on improvements. We hope you’ll give us another chance to deliver a better experience.
Good course, fair value
Course was in good shape. Fairways and greens were nice and true to readings. Some blind tee shots that rewarded good shots with ball in water hazards. Best for a first timer to get some advice prior to playing a round. Overall a good experience!
Glad you enjoyed the course! It sounds like the conditions really held up well, especially with true greens and solid fairways—that always makes a round more enjoyable. Those blind tee shots can definitely be tricky, but it’s great when good shots are rewarded (even if there’s a little risk involved with the water). Good tip for first-timers too—getting some local advice can make a big difference out there. Overall, sounds like a fun and worthwhile round!
Value is bad as greens are poor.
Greens were sparse with grass, dried out in spots, very slow and very rough. Will never play there again.
Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear the greens did not meet your expectations. They were recently verti-cut as part of our maintenance program to promote long-term health, but we understand conditions may have impacted your experience. We appreciate your comments and hope you’ll consider giving us another try in the future.
Greens
Greens were in TERRIBLE SHAPE. Way over priced also lots of duck and goose crap on course, not healthy. I was going to ask for a discount.
Thank you for your review. We apologize that the greens and overall conditions didn’t meet your expectations. The greens were recently verti-cut to support their long-term health, but we understand that can impact play in the short term. We’re also actively addressing the presence of geese and ducks on the course. We appreciate your feedback and hope to provide you with a much improved experience on your next visit.
