Wigwam Resort - Gold Course
About
The Gold Course is one of three 18-hole courses offered at the Wigwam Resort, which was named one of Golf Magazine's "Silver Medal Resorts." Golf Digest cited the Gold Course as one of the best public courses in the state. Mature trees are present on all of the courses, as well as winding creeks that create water hazards, which come into play on several holes. There are also strategically placed sand bunkers present on the course. The rolling landscape of the course causes elevation changes that can affect shots. The Wigwam Resort facility also has a putting green and chipping area.

Reseed opening too soon
This normally pleasant course was opened way too soon after reseeding. The fairways were uneven and so poorly prepared, it was difficult to find balls in the fairway. Greens were furry and we finally resorted to granting 2 putts once you hit the green. Bunkers were grassy and some were crunchy on the bottom from evaporated water. Only one had rakes. I'm sure it will look great in a week or two but it definitely was not a high end resort presentation, at any price, on this day.
Overseeding
While it was undersood that the course was just overseeded and cart path only it was in no condition to be played The traps were full of grass and no sand the first rake that was seen on the course was 18. this course should not have been open to guest or public play at any price
Bad Greens & Slow Play
I drove an hour to get out there and expected a nice course. For the price I paid the course was in very poor shape.
Greens: Extremely bad shape. Looks like they have not been watered in quite some time. A lot of them had big chunks of just dirt areas with no grass. It was the worse I have seen anywhere all year. Wedges will not hold or stick.
Fairways: The rough was challenging but nothing to intense. Fairways were decent but still mostly dead.
Bunkers: No sand at all. Chips shots off of hard dirt.
Pace of play: 5 hours! There were multiple groups of five-somes... Not efficient or fun having to wait 5-10 minutes every shot.
Some of the hole layouts are very strange. One par 3 from the tips played about 213 and had a tree right in front of the tee box. It required a monster hook to get anywhere near the green.
last minute deal.
decided at the last minute to play. staff was great. course was in good condition. had to stop after 16. thunder and wind
1st Timer
Tough classic course that worth playing at least once. Choose the tees that are appropriate for your game. The course can be very long with the thicker rough
Extreme course conditions
Hard, slow, bumpy greens made putting difficult. 3"+ Bermuda grass rough not very fair; made it easy to loose ball and prevent hitting greens. Layout of a couple holes questionable. Some pin positions too difficult with green conditions.
Great day of Golf
It was my first time there at the Wigwam Gold. I found the staff helpful and very friendly.
Nice layout
Course in good shape including fairways and greens. Grounds crew in process of mowing the rough to a more reasonable length than had been talked about in earlier reviews. Still a course that one needs to drive the ball straight and long to be able to score. Would recommend playing once but probably will not play again this year.
Not Good
The course layout itself is not bad, it's long, but not bad. The problem is that the rough is horrible. You can't find your ball if you are 2 inches off the fairway or green. And all it is is unmowed grass, not anything even nice looking. The greens were horrible, they had piles of dirt and tire tracks on almost every hole. I'll never golf here again.
Wigwam Golf
Grass was too long. Had to search for balls almost ever hit that wasn't on the fairway itself. I don't mean we chucked it in the boonies, but every just off the fairway grass was hard to find. Green were too slow too. Being a recreational golfer I don't really like US Open rough. Wigwam is a great place, just get the mowers out there more often.
Heritage course money well spent
Course was in good condition and would play anytime
Good test from the Jones (champ) Tees
I'm a professional golfer and I'd say this course is a great test of golf! The fairways are fairly narrow and the greens are very small for a course that plays right at 7500 yards from the tips. It was in good condition with good greens for the summer time in Phoenix. The 18th hole was kinda odd and didn't really fit the course, but saying that, it was nice to birdie the last.
Good Friendly Course
course in good shape but rough was long and thick. You could see where the ball went and still not find it. Not the usual setup. Could of been due to amount of rain for two weeks prior. Unusual for Az. Good course overall.
tuff rough
Played 36 holes. Gold and then blue. Rough was long and tough. Lost a few balls. Overall a really fun day. Always enjoyable to play here. Cart girl (Sheri) was very friendly and around a lot, which helped because it was warm.
Top rated facility and great staff.
Second time playing at the Wigwam, first time on the Gold course, and I can't get enough. The course was in great shape, and the facilities and staff were fantastic. Reminds me of the east valley
(Scottsdale) courses I used to play, but a lot less snobby people and more for your money.
Watch for signs to navigate the course, it gets tricky
Beautiful facility with wide fairways and incredible staff to help you find your way...
lost on yardages
greens were a little rough and was often lost on yardages. Played the heritage (red) course but accidentally teed off on the closed gold course which I would recommend over the heritage course. it was nice enough, especially for the money. I think I paid $16 for round, cart, and range. nice.
Booked on Gold but had to play Heritage
I booked a time on the Gold course a day earlier, but when I showed up they told me I was booked on the Patriot (par 3 and 4's) The guy in the shop told me they had closed the Gold that morning, he didn't know why. I opted to play the Heritage instead, as that's a regulation length course. I've played the Heritage before and it's ok but not as good as the Gold. The greens looked like they hadn't been mowed in a couple of days, why I don't know as they were pretty full...no bare spots. The fairways and tees were fine but the condition of the greens was kind of a bummer. Hopefully the Gold will be open next time I book:)
Play this course
I played the Gold course and the greens and fairways were in perfect order. Really challenging par 3's and 5's. Great experience.
