The golf course at Red Mountain Ranch & Country Club is a beautifully designed layout set against a desert landscape with rock formations, mesquite trees, and cacti. Pete and Perry Dye designed the course, combining both beauty and challenge. This championship course was built on rolling terrain and has large, sharply contoured greens and extensive mounding that is reinforced with railroad ties. There are not only deep sand bunkers but also grass bunkers protecting the greens. There are also four ponds on the course at Red Mountain Ranch & Country Club, but only three create water hazards that come into play on four holes. A notable hole on the course in which water comes into play is the sixth, a hole that has a peninsula green with water surrounding it along three sides.

Great condition

Course is very challenging with some really interesting holes. Course was in excellent shape. They could use a ranger out as group in front of us was pretty slow and a local decided to jump in an join our 3 some on about the 14th hole. Otherwise a very enjoyable day.

Bring your approach and short game

This Pete Dye designed golf course was in excellent condition when we played. The visuals of the course and the surrounding areas are top rate.

We played the combination tees at about 6000 yards so it is not long and the fairways are generous. The rough is sticky and you pay for missing the fairway.

Here it is all about approach shots and short game/putting. There are almost no flat spots on the greens and many are two and three tiers. If you aren't on the one where the pin is you are in trouble. The greens are well protected with bunkering and other obstacles.

This is a great golf course but you need to be a skilled player to score here. It will test you.

Lots of hills and undulations make it tough. The greens were slow but still difficult to read. It’s one of those courses that is challenging but if you play it a few times, you can improve your score.

A mixed bag

The course is pretty good tee to green, but the green complexes are very small and ridiculously contoured, to the point that at least half of the pin positions were unfair. Also, the green side bunkers are very steep-faced and don’t have enough nearly sand in them, which makes it virtually impossible to get the ball out of the traps.

Tricky Approach Shots

Red Mountain is in great shape. Pace for a Friday afternoon was acceptable, 4.5 hrs. Staff is very friendly and the starter does a great job getting people to keep pace.

Don’t let the course length determine where to play from

Course conditions were excellent and the forced carries on tee shots were great visuals from tee boxes. Overall I enjoyed the course but beware as the greens are EXTREMELY difficult. Very small and hard to hold. Length of course is short but the starter advised to plan for additional “500 yards”. Glad he told us as the approaches into the greens are tough. Narrow fairways so you need to be accurate. Assumed the round would be slow due to it being a members course with public play but it moved well. Older gas carts with no GPS was unfortunate but overall a great challenge in a surprising location. Great value for the money.

Slowest Greens in Phoenix

Course has a lot of appeal until you hit your first putt…..grainy, super slow greens. For prime time, unacceptable. As foursome, we loved the course contour but the greens were the worst we’ve played in Arizona, probably rolling at 7 on stump meter. Little sand in traps and US Open level roughs, approach 4 inches long. When you thing of Scottsdale, you don’t think of a course like this. We won’t be back.

Tough track

This course may seem short but it is a tough test of golf. Many of the holes do not require a driver off the tee but extreme precision is needed with your approach shots. The bunkers were not is the best of shape. Greens were firm and approach shots were hard to get to hold or spin. The green surfaces were fast but true. There was a lot of undulation on the greens and along with the speed made two putting difficult. The pro shop was not very impressive but you go to Red Mountain for the course.
