The deserts of Arizona are the last place you'd expect to find an ode to the British Open but the Monument course at Troon North is a love song to the golf courses on the other side of the Atlantic, from the ability to play bump-and-run shots into greens into the names of some of the holes.

A round of golf on the Monument Course at the Troon North Golf Club kicks off on a par-4 hole that measures 444 yards from the Black tees. Things get long on the third hole, a par 5 that plays to 564 yards from the Black tee and is one of four holes that come in at over 500 yards from the Black tees.

The 18th hole on the Monument Course at the Troon North Golf Club will be a relative breeze, then, a par 4 that measures just 370 yards from the Black tees.

Great day at Troon North monument coarse

This coarse is one of the most beautiful golf coarses I have ever played, #16 on the monument side is just amazing! This is a MUST stop for any golfer.

Not up to par

Have played Troon several times and normally enjoy it. The Pinnacle course greens on this day were in extremely poor condition. Range access was limited. The overall value just not there.

Poor greens

Played the Pinnacle course, and joined a 3 some that played Monument earlier that day. The course is beautiful and fairways were very nice. The practice green was immaculate and fast. The course greens were a mine field of divots and much slower then the practice green. Our balls were bouncing to the hole it took me 9 holes to hit hard enough to get the ball to the hole. The others were OK on speed since they just played 18 but said Monument greens were in even worse shape. For the price paid its just not acceptable for the greens to be in this shape. If you are spending $250 in north Scottsdale there are many other better choices that still get heavy play but their greens were great. Eg Boulders, Grayhawk Wildfire which I played and enjoyed more. I played here a few years ago and the greens were as smooth as a pool table what changed?

Great Layout

Pinnacle Course was perfect, yardage book was a great help as was my rangefinder. Very challenging greens that putted very well. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Back 9 pace got real slow for some reason and we barely finished before dark.
Nearly a 5 hour round. Don't miss the happy hour food and beverages.

One of may favourites

Always enjoy playing Troon Monument when in Scottsdale. Course in great shape and pace of play is much improved, we were 4:05 starting at 11 am. Good layout with several tee boxes so you can make it as easy or difficult as you wish.

Calgary Golfer

Played Pinnacle from tips 7000 yds. $99 on Golfnow at 7.45am. Do not play in th emorning. Very cold!!! Windy!!

Service good. No GPS on carts. Unacceptable. Ball and Club washer on cart.

Tee boxes, fairways in great shape. Greens have too many unrepaired ballmarks, medium speed.

Average difficulty. Too many houses ln the course, and some are in play in getting hit.

Everyone told me this was a must play course from back home. So I had big expectations. But the course is average in design, and views. Especially when I have played Boulders, Camelback Ambiente, and Quintero.

It's an ok course. Would play it once, but there are better courses and I think this course is overrated. It may have been at one time the nicest in Phoenix, but there are so many nicer courses now. Not great value when there are equally priced courses which are better.

Rush, Rush, rush

My wife and I and another couple played this course for the first time. After six holes the ranger came up to us and told us that we were hole behind. First off there was nobody agead of us when we started. Secondly there was poorly marked t boxes while going to them you would have to backtrack because they mixed t boxes together (Black & gold)without leaving a sign. In the end we played the course in four hours and 15 minutes. For the money we paid I expected the course to be in much better shape. I would not recommend this course to friends of mine as I thought it was not a good value for the money.

Best Condition in Area

This was the overall best course that we played on our 5 day trip to Scottsdale (Boulders, Camelback, Vista, Quintero). The only other course that came close was Quintero, but the greens at Troon were better.

Very helpful, professional staff; great practice facility; great clubhouse.

The only knock I might have is that there were quite a few similar setup shot holes, i.e. carry distance and hole length similar. I had to leave the driver in the bag on more tee shots that I would have liked, but in saying that the course layout was still as good/varied as Quintero and better than any other course we played.

I probably wouldn't pay $350 to play any course, but at $99 on golfnow, it was the best value of any deal we saw.

Great experience!

The course was in absolutely immaculate shape. The greens were rolling great but were also soft enough for approaches. Much like every troon course it was managed fantastic from bag drop to the range even the free troon North bag tag. We played in about four hours on the monument 18 with a 1220 tee off. Our group played from the gold tees which was challenging but fair. Tons of breathtaking views you really have to take a second to appreciate. The 5 sets of tees make the course playable for everyone. I would love to go back and play again

Nice Course at the Reduced Rate

The practice areas and course were in excellent condition. The course itself was typical of the more modern desert courses in Phoenix area. There were no particularly unique holes except perhaps 16 and 17. The desert areas off the fairways have a lot of vegetation and therefore a lot of balls are lost. The value for money was good only because I got a very good rate on Golf Now. Legend Trail which is nearby offers a more interesting holes on a very similar layout at a much better rate

great course

Fantastic golf course that was in great shape. great views throughout the course. Pace of play was slow. Just under 5 hours. Mentioned it to a ranger but he didn't do anything about it. Group in front of us was playing from tees they didn't belong on. I thought though it was a great course the price was a little extreme at 250.00. played The Boulders for 140.00 which is just as nice and played in 4 hours as a foursome. Nice clubhouse but they should put some real faucets in the locker rooms. Nearly impossible to wash hands with those airport faucets that keep shutting off on you. Overall it is probably the best couse yoy can play in the area.

I'll be back

The course was in great shape and the staff were great. It was cart-paths only, which is understandable this time of year. Great views of the valley on the back 9 especially. Very narrow and unforgiving fairways on most holes. We were able to tee-off an hour early, which was great since a storm rolled in just as we hit our approach shots on the 18th. Definitely recommended for a beautiful and challenging desert-course experience.

An icon in desert golf

36-hole Troon North is simply one of the best all-around golf experiences, from bag drop to 19th hole, among the 200 or so golf courses in the Valley of the Sun. The blend of desert scenery with tour-quality shot values, service and facilities are legendary among golfers visiting the Valley of the Sun.

Both the Pinnacle & Monument courses are practically equal in their aesthetics and challenge, and have some wider landing zones than other desert courses of their era, but I give the slightest edge to the Monument.

The Monument's front nine is fantastic (highlighted by the giant boulder monument in the 3rd fairway), but the back side takes it a step further, trudging up some higher ground and has two par 5s that head uphill to get you to a high vantage point. No. 11 and 13 are both stunning, and the boulder pile behind the 13th green is massive (though by that point, there are so many great mountain and boulder views you almost forget to soak all of it in).

But the downhill holes that reward you for the trudge on the early back nine holes are special. Architect Tom Weiskopf loves short par 4s and there are several on the course, none better than the 15th. At little more than 300 yards, not only is it an exciting hole to play, but the views once you reach the putting surface are among the course's best, being on some of the highest golfing ground in North Scottsdale.

Troon North invites golfers to walk either course with use of a rickshaw or by hoofing it with the bag over your shoulder, part of Troon Golf's "Troon Fit" program. It's a pretty tough walk through the desert, nearly 9 miles, though the Pinnacle is a little more suitable in that regard. You'll enjoy a day here no matter whether you walk or ride or play Pinnacle or Monument. This place is a slam dunk for high-roller golf in Scottsdale.

The tougher side

Narrower and packed with nasty surprises. Here's a tip, on the hole called "Gamble", don't. If you can only play one side of Troon North, play this one. My only complaint is that people don't fix their ball marks on the greens.
