Legend Trail Golf Club
About
When the architect Rees Jones created the golf course at the Legend Trail Golf Club, he created a golf course that brings out the Old West-style air of Scottsdale and a fun and testing golf course with greens made of bent grass. It's a premium golf course smack dab in the Sonora Desert.
The golf course at the Legend Trail Golf Club features broad fairways, diminutive bunkering and tees placed on islands, and has been called one of the Top 100 golf courses by Golf Magazine. The magazine also gives Legend Trail 4.5 stars out of five among its
Best Places to Play, and has one of the Top 100 Woman-Friendly Fairways, according to Golf For Women magazine. Panoramas include local sites like Pinnacle Peak, and a round at Legend Trail Golf Club gives all levels of golfer several different shot-making options.
Golf a late-afternoon round on Friday or Saturday, and head back to the Trail's End Grill from 4 to 6 p.m. for specials on drinks and appetizers.

Another Great Hole Photo submitted by mhinkle on 09/23/2012
Great Desert course
Love this course, great layout and the greens roll nice- definitely will be back to play it again.
The course needs some TLC. Play elsewhere.
The course is in bad shape. Hundreds of unfilled divots on every hole and tee box. No GPS in the carts so determining hazards is tough. The bunkers are the worst I've played in over a decade - very little sand but lots of hardpan clay, which is difficult to hit from. The greens are in poor shape as they're bumpy and shaggy. And the Pro Shop and starter need customer service training. Here's the deal - we were a foursome playing at a sub-4 hour pace (nobody in sight behind us) and as we're about to tee off on 7 the starter drives up and gruffly tells us we're behind schedule and to pick up our pace. Yet there wasn't anyone in sight behind us since we started the round.. We finish in 3:45, 30 minutes ahead of their target of 4:15. So why the rude visit from the starter? There's lots of great well maintained golf courses to play in Phoenix/Scottsdale that provide a great golf experience, but unfortunately this isn't one of them. Suffice it to say we won't be back.
Legend Trail
Fantastic conditions other than one green....pace of play was great and staff always so welcoming.....definitely a hidden gem in AZ.

Needs improvement
Legend Trail is not a bad track or layout; it has some original and fun holes, and plenty of gorgeous saguaro cacti. The back 9 also features nice mountain backdrops on several holes, and you can definitely have a good time on the course.
But it does need improvement on lots of things to be up to par with the competition:
-Several tee boxes and greens were patchy and need better care.
-Distances in general are poorly identified, with pretty much nothing but the 150-yard pole to help you out.
-Several hidden obstacles (desert wash, sand traps, water!) that can be reached but are not visible off the tee.
-Carts are old gas models with no extras (no washers, no GPS); not a dealbreaker, but not up to date with the competition.
-Several sand traps were just hard sand with no hopes of getting under the ball.
-Lots of forced carries, so short hitters beware!
-Most desert areas are not tended to, and very dense with all types of spiny plants and trees ; forget finding that stray ball, much less playing it.
-Routes between holes were not always clearly indicated. How hard is it to add a few signs and avoid some back and forth?
-The staff didn't seem to care about customers very much.
All of those issues can be resolved, but until they are, Legend Trail simply does not stack up to similar priced courses in the area.
Terrible greens, otherwise very good
Really enjoyed the course layout, makes you think off the tee and some very interesting holes particularly 7-18. Good amenities. For the price you pay, however, the greens are very very poor. This may be a temporary thing, I'm not sure. Doesn't seem that anyone repairs pitch marks and they seemed very patchy as well. You expect better and it lets the rest of the course down, otherwise would rank it higher.
What a beautiful day, beautiful golf course, played with nice people loved the course great condition fun and challenging holes will definitely play it again.
Great course and service staff, greens are a little bare in spots. Overall well worth the greens fee.
Nice Layout,,Good Condition
I played the forward jade tees. Yardage was not long but with a number of forced carry’s it plays longer than stated. Greens were a bit shaggy. Played in a foursome in a little over Four hours. Would definitely play here again.
Nice layout, can't manage pace of play
Played many times in the past few years. Course layout is really good, and conditions are usually decent, price competitive. That's all good.
The bad is that the membership is elderly (and I'm elderly) and pace of play can be awful, with the added issue that the course management and rangers are more interested in explaining why the pace isn't so bad than actually doing anything to manage it.
Greens are in poor condition
Compared to other courses in the area the greens are below average.
Fun track, hidden secreta
The good stuff-
We thoroughly enjoyed the staff in the clubhouse and the starters. The course was is pretty good shape, good lies were easy to find.
The not so good stuff-
The course has lots of hidden secrets and sight lines, hole maps or yardage books would go a very long ways. The frustration came from the grounds crews, we had several mowers forcing us to wait while they mowed, also not turning off their machines whilst on the green. At one point , 10th tee box, the grounds crew was 10 yards away and starting to yell for another helper amidst a backswing. Not my idea of “club” golf
Great Afternoon
Play this course about once a year and it never disappoints. Looks like they had a great overseed, staff was friendly, and the hot dog hit the spot. We had a 1:30 tee time on a busy day. I really didn't expect to finish before dark, but the 4 hour 10 minute round allowed us get all 18 in.
Highly disappointing
This course was recommended to me by a very good golfer.
..
There was no GPS on the cart and it wasn’t available for my SKY CADDIE either. I read after our round that they said there was yardages on sprinkler heads. I did not see any. The only yardage maker was a pole at 150 yards from the green oon the Par 4’s and Par 5’s. (I guess you are expected to have your own binoculars made specifically for golf. Everyone can’t afford these.
The course is mainly beautiful but signage is totally missing. When you leave a green there is a very winding golf path and the small sign telling you the next tee is not found till WAY down the path, if at all. Two of the Par 5’s have a waste bunker canal crossing the fairway and you have no idea what the yardage is from your drive —- to lay up or to cross this hazard.
I was actually appalled that a course (at $89 USD) would not have better signage and GPS.. We actually took a wrong turn more than once. I have golfed over 180 different golf courses and I pay attention to details.
The layout of the course is quite unique and the course was in good condition. I do think the bunkering was a bit penal as they were very deep with overhanging grass. I even had trouble getting out of the bunker myself.
Members and staff were welcoming. Kinda got rushed out due to some inbound weather, and the lightning ended my round early. I was given a $45 raincheck... we will see how much golf that gets me...
The course is wide for a desert/neighborhood course with fairly large greens. You can score here if you can putt.
Public Course with a Private Club Feel
Nice open fairways. Very green, carts on course now. Restaurant not great. Food same. Purchased club card as a really nice course for value.
Slow play and mismanagement ruin an otherwise good course
Waited every shot front nine, ranger did nothing, then allowed a 5some to begin play ahead of us on #10 and then mishandled that. Similar problems the last time I played. This used to be an enjoyable place to play, but there are too many good courses in Scottsdale to put up with that nonsense.
Had a great day
The course is very nice, well maintained, and a good challenge from the silver tees that we played. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a true desert course experience without having to pay the high green fees of some of the other courses in the area.
Very good value and golf experience !
