Hillcrest Golf Club possesses a championship length course that offers a great variety of game options with five sets of tees. The course has a traditional design that features open fairways lined with trees, which put a premium on straight shots. The greens vary greatly with some that are relatively flat and medium sized and others that are quite large and dramatically sloped or multi-tiered. In addition to several sand bunkers, water hazards in the forms of lakes and ponds come into play. The signature hole is the par-5 13th, which has been touted by the Phoenix Gazette as being on of the best holes in the state. Hillcrest Golf Club not only has a dogleg around a lake, the hole requires an approach shot uphill to a green that is guarded by eight bunkers.

Poor conditions for a “golf” course

“Fairways” were mowed like rough in most places I’ve ever played in this country, deeper than first cut of rough in most places I’ve played. It was early morning and I lost 3 balls in the fairway because I played a green ball that would drop down halfway in the deep fairway grass. Imagine trying to closely watch every shot you hit because you know you won’t find it. Bunkers filled with water. Greens mowed like normal fairways, so slowwwww. Driving range boxes we’re on an uphill… ridiculous for trying to get your distance for the day. Ridiculous to have to hunt for your ball after every single shot except when it was visible on the green. Staff was nice. Course conditions were poor beyond belief.

Sand traps

The sand traps are the scores need a lot of work. The scorecard yardage is so far off as to be ridiculous

Hillcrest is always a pleasant experience. They just reopened after overseed

So, cart path only and some fuzzy greens. It’s a laid back place, and fun.

It beats forking over 150.00 to play like &$@# at Scottsdale course and not have fun.

Lots of dogleg fairways, an elevated tee, some water to challenge your play as well

Go play!!

Different year, same Hillcrest

Been here about 20 times over the years. This used to be a great spot with well kept landscaping. It just isn’t that anymore, and it’s been awhile. If you’re looking for a budget course nearby, go ahead and stop by. If you’re looking for something different from your course, stop by. Don’t expect much but it isn’t the worst course out there. Too bad because the layout is pretty darn cool and if they put some seed in the bare spots it would be really beautiful

Not what I expected

While the website said 90 degree rule, we arrive to find we could only drive in the rough. Then we were instructed to “hurry up” even though we finished 18 holes in just under 4 hours. Not that much fun. A disappointment from years ago.

Would have been nice to know

We checked in around 12:15 for a 12:52 tee time. We were told the back 9 was closed and we should play the front 9 twice. While we were playing we saw other players on the back 9 playing. When we finished our second time around the front we said we saw players on the back and then they told us that they opened it 8 minutes after we started play. Would have been nice if they told us when we made the turn. We never got to play the best part of the course. Very disappointed.

Late summer review

The union hills layout is nice. But it is suffering and apparently for sale. The conditions are a little rough. But it is ready for overseeding. The amenities are gone and the course is barely open. A shame, it's a nice course.

Not what it used to be

I’m biased as I’ve known Hillcrest for 25yrs. This used to be a beautiful and immaculately kept course. It’s still fun to play but concrete cart paths are mostly gone. Overall grass is patchy. Greens are very rough and slow. Grass is growing into the cups. I’d say it’s worth the price, but just keep your expectations low. This would now be a great beginners course or just fun for friends to play and party along the way.

Great Layout, No Bunker Sand

This course is an anomaly. The course is a great layout, but the maintenance is sporadic. Winter conditions are usually pretty good, but they really let it go through the summer months. The bunkers were nothing but dirt so anything landing in a bunker was unplayable. The greens were patchy at times as well. Areas outside of the fairways are usually just hard pan. I have my own local rule playing here in the summer—lift and place on grass. :))

You get what you pay for

The round was very inexpensive — $30 with cart. Fairways are in very good shape. Greens were extremely hairy in the morning—like Velcro. A little better as they dried out, but a lot of dirt patches on them. Bunkers are totally unplayable. Sun AM round and they were cutting the grass in many of the holes and didn’t care that they were directly in front of our shot. So, it was a edited round, and I am not dying to go back. But if you are on a budget or just beginning to play, you get a lot of golf for your money here

Good to get your golf fix in a pinch, not the best maintained

Fairways and tee boxes were kept pretty well maintained. Greens were slow which is fine to me, however lots of big dirt patches on some of the greens. No beverage cart going around when it’s 108 degrees outside. Staff is friendly but not impressed by the amenities

Used to be a great course.

They unfortunately let this course go. When bunkers have weeds it’s never a good thing. Fairways are still surprisingly decent but greens are rock hard. Course was a jewel 10-15 years ago.
