Hillcrest Golf Club at Sun City West
About
Hillcrest Golf Club possesses a championship length course that offers a great variety of game options with five sets of tees. The course has a traditional design that features open fairways lined with trees, which put a premium on straight shots. The greens vary greatly with some that are relatively flat and medium sized and others that are quite large and dramatically sloped or multi-tiered. In addition to several sand bunkers, water hazards in the forms of lakes and ponds come into play. The signature hole is the par-5 13th, which has been touted by the Phoenix Gazette as being on of the best holes in the state. Hillcrest Golf Club not only has a dogleg around a lake, the hole requires an approach shot uphill to a green that is guarded by eight bunkers.

You get what you pay for
The round was very inexpensive — $30 with cart. Fairways are in very good shape. Greens were extremely hairy in the morning—like Velcro. A little better as they dried out, but a lot of dirt patches on them. Bunkers are totally unplayable. Sun AM round and they were cutting the grass in many of the holes and didn’t care that they were directly in front of our shot. So, it was a edited round, and I am not dying to go back. But if you are on a budget or just beginning to play, you get a lot of golf for your money here
Good to get your golf fix in a pinch, not the best maintained
Fairways and tee boxes were kept pretty well maintained. Greens were slow which is fine to me, however lots of big dirt patches on some of the greens. No beverage cart going around when it’s 108 degrees outside. Staff is friendly but not impressed by the amenities
Used to be a great course.
They unfortunately let this course go. When bunkers have weeds it’s never a good thing. Fairways are still surprisingly decent but greens are rock hard. Course was a jewel 10-15 years ago.
Hillcrest golf course review
Nice layout but rough was a bit too much Large areas of flat ground should be cut so you can find your ball. Why did they let some of the holes go ? Worth the money.
Not as bad as advertised
We’ll maintained course. Greens rolled decently and the grass was mowed on the fairways and rough! Cool design and lay out. No water, no cart person. Super slow pace no Marshall to speed it along!
All employees exceptionally helpful courteous very friendly
Hillctest golf
All was good. Not crowded. The course was in excellent condition given that is hot and dry
Used to be one of the best. Too much rough , traps terrible and greens slow.
5 Star layout 2 Star Condition!
I want to give 5 Stars but the condition iis so bad, especially the bunkers and cart paths. I will say the fairways are fine and greens are in good shape and roll ok but shower than it could be potentially with right maintenance. I see lots of workers on the course but every bunker is crappy. Some you can tell haven't had sandwich in them since Trump was President. I really enjoy this layout after playing all the tight desert courses in the area. This was fun and refreshing to play. The elevated greens are fun. The tee boxes are tiny and the grass is weird but it works. I'm going to come back and bring friends but I'll only pay $35 Maximum. That's it.
First Time
The course, and the practice areas, are in good shape, except for the bunkers. Many were half full of water, and all others were hard, and needed to be cleaned and restored. I would play this course again. The carts are in great shape.
Not worth the trip
Course is in terrible condition, not mowing, tee boxes shabby, sand trap not being cleaned or ranked.
Too many other courses in the area, I would not recommend Hillcrest even if they had a free day
Cheapest course around
At the time of writing this, they really need to cut the grass, if you don't hit it in the fairway, good luck finding your ball!
Also, they get backed up quite a bit sometimes, but overall probably the best bang for your buck if you just want to get out there and golf.
Bunker Sadness
I have reviewed this course before. The layout keeps bringing me back; the conditions, however, can be ‘iffy’ at times. The fairway grass is usually good, and the greens are playable most times, but anything off the fairway gets sketchy. From hardpan to marginal grass is the usual. On this outing, the bunkers were virtually unplayable. Recent rains turned the bunkers into dirt. The groundskeepers clearly had not raked them for weeks. It is a pleasant/inexpensive place to play, nevertheless, so I’ll be back.
DTHillcrest8.2022
I like playing here. They offer affordable rates, and the people are friendly. I liked the conditions yesterday. The greens rolled true, and the fairways were perfect. Lots of water, but most times it doesn’t come in to play as long as you are accurate. Hillcrest is a doctor n course.
Course has gone downhill
They let the course go! Greens are in awful shape. Dirt and holes and craters in the greens. It’s almost like the greens keepers walked out on them.
Better Than Expected
After reading so many negative reviews, my expectations were pretty low for playing Hillcrest on this Sunday afternoon. For what I paid ($11/plus taxes/fees), I would play this course again. Pace of play was good--finished in 2.5 hours. Course layout isn't your typical Sun City/Sun City West, so that was a nice change of pace.
