DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge

About
Perched in the hills above Santa Cruz, DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge features plenty of elevation changes as well as tight, tree-lined fairways making this short layout anything but a cinch. The result of the tight layout, however, often translates into long rounds as higher handicappers look for their golf balls in the woods. Designed by Bert Stamps, the golf course opened in 1970. Conditioning is average, but DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge's green fees are a small fraction of its more famous neighbors.

What happened?
The tee boxes and fairway’s conditions were terrible. (similar to rough)
Challenging, but…
So this is a difficult and challenging course. The greens and bunkers were as good as I have seen with work going on in preparation for the yearly Amateur. The tee boxes needed cutting, lots of dirt in the fairways (#1, 4, 9, 14), tree work going on during play. No GPS in cart. Kudos to Macey the beverage girl, and to the desk staff who got us out in time or addressed slow play in front of us.
It is the weirdest course I have ever played, trees right in front of greens, side hill fairway every where, poor conditions. It has a ton of possibilities but the city to hire a professional golf manager and architect and revamp the course. Don’t waste your time or money on this goat track
Delaveaga renovation
Delaveaga golf course is a wonderful Track but in poor condition. It's my recommendation that Delaveaga transitions to a naturalist/minimalist golf course with a targeted Single line irrigation system that can substantially shrink the irrigation footprint of the golf course. By transitioning to a naturalist style golf course, Delaveaga will save the City water while simultaneously allowing the maintenance staff to MANICURE a smaller portion of the golf course and bring Delaveaga closer to resort style quality.
Fair-Way
You will fare well if you can keep it that way in the fairway.
Nice layout and can be challenging but rewarding to place your drives where they should be.
Tee boxes
Played here many times. Course lay out is pretty good. Hole# 10 is hard if you don’t have distance. Fairways conditions are so so. Tee boxes are bad. I should like this course better but the tee boxes turn me off. They have good driving range and good practice green. Chipping areas are nice but they need to mow the grass more often.
Course is unforgiving
Nice course, very scenic, fairways on good shape.
Lots of fairways are side hills lays. Most holes have deep woods next to them. Had 4 balls roll of fairways into wood and down in poison oak.
Not a place for high handicappers
Nice driving range, very good restaurant. Pro sop folks were friendly.
The Price is Ridiculous
$110 on a Saturday morning?! Are you serious? I’ve been playing this course for years and I only play twilight because that’s the only reasonable time to play for the price. It’s a shame they charge so much for a non-twilight round. The course is in such bad shape. You can play several courses that are around the same rate and are much more well kept in San Jose or Monterey.
If you’re reading this, don’t ever play this course for a rate that is over $50. You will be so disappointed.
The city of SC really needs to address these horrendous rates. Its embarrassing.
Worst tee box
Worst tee boxs I ever played on, nothing is even and theres soo many divots youre looking for a nice spot or just teeing up. The uneven part is the worst part, so many random mounds and lil hills on the tee box so youre not standing flat with your ball, which throws you off. Front 9 is a reg muni nothing fancy. Back 9 is def better, also nobody wears golf wear here. We wore polos and slacks and we felt SUPER overdressed. Ppl in cargo shorts, jeans, tee shirts, sandals.
Lots of potential, poorly maintained
It’s a bit sad that de la has fallen into such a state of disrepair. It’s a short but challenging track that puts a premium on accuracy off the tee (longer hitters only have 2-3 opportunities to bring the driver out). The lay out is interesting, the setting is beautiful, and there are occasional peeks at the ocean. The staff are amazing, the pro shop guys will talk shop all day long, and both teaching pros are solid. And I love the little bar next to the driving range - great place to chill and have a beer between buckets.
And I really hope that someday, this course will live up to its potential again, but right now it is borderline unplayable. The greens are chewed up and/or covered in blight. The fairways are patchy, the rough is somehow clumpy and sponge-y. Bunkers are essentially waste areas at this point, and tee boxes on par threes are basically just dirt and divot mix.
A lot of courses go through rough patches like this and come out the other side, so I’m hoping that de la will be one of those courses. But until the maintenance is stepped up to a reasonable level, I don’t think i can justify spending 50-80 bucks when there are other local options at the same price point and in much better shape.
Great Experience- I Will Be Back
First time playing the course. The staff at the desk were very helpful. They provided an invaluable booklet which provided recommendations for how to play each hole as well as graphic layouts with distances to sand traps and prominent bends at each hole (there are more dogleg holes than most golf courses). This made it easier to make my club selection. With the advice from staff and booklet I was amazed I lost two balls at this hilly, heavily wooded and narrow golf course.
The course has a good variety of challenges at each hole. A few of the shorter holes have very small greens. Like many Northern California courses the sand traps are a little more hard packed.
A real plus was its location on the coast. When inland temperatures were in the mid 90s it was 20+ degrees cooler.
Overall it was a great experience. I will be returning again for sure.
