DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge
About
Perched in the hills above Santa Cruz, DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge features plenty of elevation changes as well as tight, tree-lined fairways making this short layout anything but a cinch. The result of the tight layout, however, often translates into long rounds as higher handicappers look for their golf balls in the woods. Designed by Bert Stamps, the golf course opened in 1970. Conditioning is average, but DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge's green fees are a small fraction of its more famous neighbors.

Lots of potential, poorly maintained
It’s a bit sad that de la has fallen into such a state of disrepair. It’s a short but challenging track that puts a premium on accuracy off the tee (longer hitters only have 2-3 opportunities to bring the driver out). The lay out is interesting, the setting is beautiful, and there are occasional peeks at the ocean. The staff are amazing, the pro shop guys will talk shop all day long, and both teaching pros are solid. And I love the little bar next to the driving range - great place to chill and have a beer between buckets.
And I really hope that someday, this course will live up to its potential again, but right now it is borderline unplayable. The greens are chewed up and/or covered in blight. The fairways are patchy, the rough is somehow clumpy and sponge-y. Bunkers are essentially waste areas at this point, and tee boxes on par threes are basically just dirt and divot mix.
A lot of courses go through rough patches like this and come out the other side, so I’m hoping that de la will be one of those courses. But until the maintenance is stepped up to a reasonable level, I don’t think i can justify spending 50-80 bucks when there are other local options at the same price point and in much better shape.
Great Experience- I Will Be Back
First time playing the course. The staff at the desk were very helpful. They provided an invaluable booklet which provided recommendations for how to play each hole as well as graphic layouts with distances to sand traps and prominent bends at each hole (there are more dogleg holes than most golf courses). This made it easier to make my club selection. With the advice from staff and booklet I was amazed I lost two balls at this hilly, heavily wooded and narrow golf course.
The course has a good variety of challenges at each hole. A few of the shorter holes have very small greens. Like many Northern California courses the sand traps are a little more hard packed.
A real plus was its location on the coast. When inland temperatures were in the mid 90s it was 20+ degrees cooler.
Overall it was a great experience. I will be returning again for sure.
Good golf day
Course is very challenging but not too bad if u know the course. Fun day....
Greens in good shape but fairways were a bit thin.
Many T boxes were spongy and need to be leveled and mowed.
Bring all your skills
20+ handicapper. Course management is a key here or you can lose a lot of balls. Enjoyed the challenges and many variations of shots required. It plays along the ridges of the foothills which means the balls often can roll off and down away from the fairway line of play.
Delaveaga makeover rec
Delaveaga is a wonderful Track but in poor condition. It's my recommendation that Delaveaga transitions to a desert style naturalist golf course with a Single line irrigation system that will shrink the irrigation footprint of the golf course. By doing a naturalist style golf course, Delaveaga will save the City water while simultaneously allowing the maintenance staff to manicure a smaller portion of the golf course and bring Delaveaga closer to resort style quality.
Hidden Gems
What a wonderful surprise to find the DaeLaveaga golf course… Great layout and challenging, it’s a golf course. I will definitely play again and again and what an amazing value for this golf course. I highly recommend you give this great golf course a try.
I want to love it
Great and challenging layout, but the greens were awful. Nobody repairs their balls marks on the greens.
Got thru in 4 hrs
Good value ..regular local started at 1:30 and finished by 5:30…good pace
No fairway
The "fairway" was not mowed having mostly not grass but clover ~3~5 inches long resulting in ball lost after hitting the center of the course or time-spending to find the ball. It also resulted in longer play time due to every golfer's effort to find the balls in addition to the cart on path only.
Biggest Rip Off Ive Ever Witnessed
For $84 twilight, this may be the worst deal I’ll ever see in my golf career. Started off the round with rude staff…. The course was just horrendous. I don’t think there was a fairway, only rough. The tee pads were more crooked than my bad knee. Genuinely, don’t come here. You may this is a joke, but go play Boulder creek twice or anything in Monterey. First time in my life, I feel like k have been violated.
Deplorable conditions
I play a lot of golf and have to say that the course looked and played like it had been closed and not attended to for months. $90 for punched greens, fairways that hadn’t been mowed in weeks, tee boxes with grass longer then tees and there was more sand on the greens than any bunker. They should be ashamed of the product they put out for the price they charge.
What a rip off.
Full price golf for a course that hasn’t been mowed in two weeks. Lost a dozen balls and 10 were in the fairway. A little warning about course conditions would have been nice before booking for $90. Will not be returning anytime soon. Same for the rest of the other singles in our group. Everyone felt the same.
