Chesapeake Golf Club
About
Chesapeake Golf Club sits tucked away in the idyllic village of Las Gaviotas, conveniently situated just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. Boasting some of the best greens in the Tidewater area, the club offers the amenities of a private club with the fees of a public golf course. The layout will challenge you with rolling fairways and tricky doglegs. Water hazards come into play frequently so be prepared for a few intimidating blind shots over water. Mature trees line the rolling fairways and there are also strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. The manageable 6,278-yard length is approachable for beginners yet there are still holes that long hitters will enjoy. Chesapeake Golf Club is a course that will test your skills but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

Poorly maintained
I like the layout at Chesapeake GC. It has several challenging holes. But, the course has been very poorly maintained. The greens are in TERRIBLE shape. I hope they are able to improve the conditions of this course, it has the potential to be nice.
Awesome Course
I frequently golf here. Staff is friendly and the course is maintained well. One of my favorites in the Hampton Roads area
AVOID!!! Not worth your time or money.
Tee’d off behind 3 slow groups. Wasn’t able to play thru. Complained to the Marshall to get them to speed up the pace of play, didn’t happen and only saw him once. We were there for 5 hours and only played 14 holes before quitting.
The greens were in terrible shape. So much sand everywhere that you couldn’t putt, and had multiple chips onto the green just die immediately when it lands on the green. They also changed the layout and there’s no stopping after 9, just 7. Course is not worth the money or the time! Avoid this year!
On Death’s Door - Who Will Save Golf in Chesapeake
It’s hard to watch another golf course die in Chesapeake. Especially one located in a city with a growing population and lack of competition from other golf courses.
Over the past five years I’ve noticed a change in the style of management at this facility. The current director of operations should have his employment contract terminated. Let someone who takes pride in their work assume the responsibility and bring back this course.
Excuse after excuse is what you hear from the current director of operations. Individuals that know the real story behind those excuses also know they’re lies.
To the new owners (an Ohio, LLC group) please wake up. Come visit and play the course. We’d be happy to join you and discuss what’s going on with your investment.
From the outside looking in, it appears the current director of operations has a bonus clause in his agreement. That’s the only reason why you wouldn’t spend sustaining capital on maintenance and upkeep of the facility.
What happened to the restaurant, bar, driving range, greens, bunkers, fairways, irrigation pumps and tee boxes? Why have so many longtime members not signed back up to play here? The answer is the same, management style of the current director of operations.
If you have to choose between playing at Chesapeake Golf Club or driving 45 minutes away with tolls and tunnels, take the ride and avoid Chesapeake Golf Club.
March 1st
Yes, it was March 1 but the greens were filled with divots and holes and bumps like Mars surface
Have heard they’re just here for the money on the golf course and I can see that
Food they only had a little bit of food in the morning and by 1 o’clock they were out of food
Not enough employees to help and assist the front desk person
Just not a good experience, especially for $45 a person
Not worth it
I wish they would inform the player of the horrible greens. Definitely should’ve had a discounted rate to play here.
Playing from the roughest of rough
I mean what a course! Amazingly….. horrible. The fairways weren’t kept up. The sand traps were hard and the greens were well… absolutely horrible. The greens were riddled with divots and bare spots filled in with sand. So many putts were driven in a different direction by hitting some of these bad spots and I mean just awful. We also got there and there weren’t enough carts for the amount of bookings. And upon return the pro was outside managing the people coming in from play and the people waiting for carts to make sure everyone was eventually getting a cart and the carts weren’t in very good shape. The seats were torn and the cart we had was on half flat tires on one side. I played here some years ago and the course was in much better shape. There weren’t enough leaf piles on parts of the fairway and my buddy and I lost probably 6-8 balls in deep leaves on the fairway or in the rough just off of the fairway. The hounds team should take notes from all of the homeowners surrounding the course and learn to keep the grass better. Never again!
What am I paying for?
$50 round of golf to play on terrible greens and fairways covered in leaves that fell months ago. This place is not worth the money. Where does everyone’s green fees go toward?
Good for value
Played this on a Hot Deal and I would say it was worth it. There are a couple spots that still need some work but to be expected in the winter/off season. We enjoyed it overall and will definitely be back - expected much worse based on the reviews but pleasantly surprised!
Can see that they are attempting to improve the greens. Cups have not been moved in weeks so the grass is growing in and narrowing the size of the cups. Actually enjoy the layout, but there is lots of work to do before I would want to pay full price for a round. Sale price and convenience are what brought me here mostly. Staff is friendly and helpful.
There's a hidden potential here
This courses layout is spectacular, but man...those greens are in some of the worst conditions I've ever seen, and I've played at some bad places. Overall the course is good, I just have no clue what the deal is with those greens. And the turn is after hole 11, which blew my mind. The restaurant/bar staff were very friendly and accommodating, just those greens!
Practically unplayable Conditions
Sorry, but your greens were mostly dirt or sand with spots of grass. The golf cart you had us take was in terrible condition, torn seat, and the wheel literally fell off before we left the parking lot. The second cart did make it through the course... Time for a complete renovation if this course is going to continue to stay open!
Terrible greens
Shouldn’t be charging that much for how awful the greens were. At least notify us before charging.
