It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.

The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Bayonet is in poor shape

Played the Bayonet course yesterday. The course is in poor shape - patchy fairways and bouncy hard greens which are not rolling true. They are building houses all over the course and it's a mess with construction debris, noise and equipment all over the place.

Not up to par

These two courses are beautiful and challenging. Unfortunately they aren’t in the great shape I have been accustomed to. Lots of bare spots in the fairways and the greens aren’t as smooth as usual either. The greens run fast and right now they are a bit beaten up so putting is tougher than ever.

Great food !

Food is excellent. Black Horse is the easier of the two courses,. Bayonet is a challenge.

Great Value.

Very nice course for the price. Difficult. My one critique: the greens don’t seem to be taken care of. They’re annoyingly fast. If you aren’t above the hole, you’re going to have a lot of 3 putts. However, great value for your $.

Fun and challenging

Fun course to play, greens are challenging but fair if you hit the ball in correct spot. It's a good place to play on Monterey without paying Pebble Beach prices.

Course is great, minus the contrcurion

Great course. I saw a few dry spotty patches along the dates of the greens, but overall good condition. Only con is the construction/landscaping that’s going on. Wood chippers, tractors, drilling all going on throughout the entire round. The workers are respectful and will stop if you’re close, but it did get annoying at times. Will def be back though.
