The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Bayonet - An Old Soldier Fading Away
My initial impression upon visiting was very disappointing. Bayonet had been built up by reviewers even friends, so my expectations were high especially after playing Pebble Beach, Spyglass and Spanish Bay. I wasn’t expecting that quality, but I expected it to be close. The course was very brown and the practice putting and chipping greens were cracked and blighted. The actual greens on the course was very good, but the initial impression was hard to overcome. The fairways were dried and brown. You can tell it has the potential to be a beautiful course, but I was disappointed. I wish I had played Poppy Hills instead.

I was saddened by the overall condition of the course from the dried up and crusty fairways to the patchy and ridiculously fast greens that would not hold any shots. Bayonet use to be so beautiful and now with the thousands of trees removed and houses encroaching it’s has lost its appeal. It’s a wonderful layout and very challenging but I will not come back only because I live on the east coast and I don’t think it’s the value it use to be.
Played both Bayonet and Black Horse. Preferred Bayonet
Great course!!
Fairways are long and narrow, so you better bring your long game. Greens are Fast!! But super fun, everybody was very friendly we got a hot deal of other golf pass, paired up with two gentlemen from the Stockton area. Super fun to play with! I just can’t say enough about coming over here to Monterey, the weather was amazing.
Wonderful experience
The course is a great challenge. The greens are in magnificent condition. Overall the course looks great. Very good value that is hard to beat!
Bayonet Experience
Played Bayonet with my son, nice layout and views. Some home construction going on around course but was not a big distraction. Enjoyed the round and had a great post round lunch.
Beautiful course & the staff was friendly and very attentive, even after we arrived late for our tee time! Made it a very memorable golf outing even for the first timers in our group.

First one off the T 7 AM finished two hours and 10 minutes 18 holes layouts nice greens are fast course in very good condition
