The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

no help available
apparently, everyone on staff heads home at 5 pm. no help on course or in cart barn. pace of play was very slow.
Always holds up to the test
These two courses have always been a part of the Monterey golf story. Whispered about by those lucky enough to play them before Ft. Ord closure. Now, a public fee course, the mystery has been swept away. Bayonet plays every inch of its length, with sometimes very challenging narrow teeing areas and greens very well protected with bunkers. No water in play. Distant bay views from many different vistas. Wind always switches “on” at 10:30, and, woe to those playing in the steady 20 mph breezes in the afternoons.
Great layout, very challenging. Putts have subtle breaks. Greens were in great condition.
The course was challenging adding to the determination to play well
Bayonet rules
Course in good shape Greens were hard and putted true.
OK but not worth the retail rate.
May 2021,
The tee boxes and fairways needed maintenance and attention. The fairways we clumpy with invasive grasses and weeds in patches, mostly on the front.
The Tee boxes had bare patches and some we noticeably out of level.
Greens, bunkers and rough around the greens we good. Nice and healthy.
Conditions overall not nearly as nice as in years past. Maybe getting too much play, which seems to be an issue with most public courses during the pandemic.
Always fun
Bayonet is a good test and always fun. Fairways were a little thin but the course overall was nice.
Bayonet a winner
Bayonet is a joy and challenge to play. Great layout Staff was great
