The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Battling Bayonet
Another gem on the Monterey Peninsula! I'm an 11 handicap and hadn't played for over 2 months and took on Bayonet on a cold overcast day. It is a challenging layout but great course -- when one is in better golf shape! As noted on the website it is considered one of the toughest tests on the Peninsula and I can attest to that. And, I loved it!
Friendly Staff
Very nice golfers and friendly staff at Seaside Bayonet Course. Golf facility is awesome. I can spend all day here. Course condition is great and weather is perfect in April. I will revisit this course when I have a chance.
Bayonet is a great course.
This course is a good value for the area. The layout is excellent. There was a lot of work being done the day we played. Greens were nice and parts of some fairways were thin.
Tough course, putting was toughest
Liked the course except for no sand to put in the divots in the fairways landed in 3 of them
Really good course, especially for the $$
Tough track with slanted fairways, undulating greens and a wide variety of hole layouts. ... can easily eat your lunch if you don't bring your best to the course .... especially when the wind blows as it did today .... and in quite good shape. Greens were firm and fast .... fairways were OK, but could be more full in places, but still very playable. Only complaint is that the traps are thin in many places .... need additional sand. Staff is very friendly from the cart folks to the pro shop, the starter, the course marshals and the beverage cart folks. Did not try the bar/restaurant. Would highly recommend you add this to your list of places to play in the Monterey area.
Fairways in bad shape
The fairways are in bad shape. Looks like the grass has some disease of some sort.
Bayonet April 2021
Architectural Gem. Course has been neglected for several years now . It screams for water and TLC.
Was told that they have to be careful with water due to the Marin Layer. As it cam cause disease and stress the greens.
Fairways are too hard . Ball should run out that much.
Needs water Aeration and turf management.
How do the other ranked courses on the peninsula closer to the water and “ Marine Layer do it ???
Love playing both courses would gladly pay more for improved turf conditions it deserves.
Staff is awesome. Great bar and food..
Beautiful course.
Pros: views are awsome, especially the 18th par 5. Great course layout. Greens rolled true but man were they FAST!!
Cons: fairways were a bit beat up. Some bunkers had little sand. Did I mention the greens were FAST!!
PERFECT DAY
PERFECT DAY, no wind, warm sun, and a chip in for BIRDIE!!!
Bayonet
If you want to test your game and fight your way for bogeys and feel very satisfied in doing so, bayonet is your course. You have to use every club in your bag. No driver, wedge all day long. You must be able to hit a 250 yard drive consistently and on the right side of the fairway to have a chance at a GIR on most holes. Very challenging, yet fair. Greens have multiple tiers on almost every hole. Had a lot of fun.
Bayo is awesome. I’m a 6 handicap and it is a great test. 10 years playing here and I finally know my lines. If you want pristine this ain’t for you - greens roll pure though..
A Bit Disappointing
I have played before and been happy but the course was in pretty poor shape this time around.
A have to play course
The course is in great condition and gives great views of Monterey Bay. Staff is friendly and willing to help. Some golfers are jerks and feel privilege and might start telling you things but just call the pro shop and let them handle it. It has happens a few times that I have played the course. Enjoy the layout and take your pics just keep pace.
