The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Best bang for your buck in the area
Such an under rated course. Well maintained, well regulated (pace of play was great), friendly staff, and a fun course for new golfers. The biggest point of emphasis is that this easily the best bang for your buck among courses in the area. Sure, it't not pebble, but if you are golfing on a budget or want to sneak in a round after blowing through your bank roll playing the pebble courses, this is a great opportunity to sneak in a fun round of golf for a very reasonable price.
10/10 would recommend.
What a great day!
Played it for my birthday. As good as it gets. Only way this course could be better is if it was right on the water! Staff is extremely friendly and teat you like royalty. Pyramids of balls at the driving range and you warm up and take on your round like a PRO!
2020 Christmas eve
Turned into a beautiful day on this track. The best part is the views. Lacked lush fairways. The tee boxes were in great condition and the greens could have used some attention. If you have the money and don't have to commute to far its a very playable track. We traveled an hour and got it for a great deal. I would not pay 165 to do it again.
Awesome course
Everything about my round was exceptional. From the proshop staff and course staff to course itself. Stunning views, well manicured with tricky greens.
A true pleasure to play
Great place, excellent given the craziness of covid in December
Under the circumstances you could say they did an excellent job. A few of the greens were inconsistent in speed and softness. Also the fairways were not at perfect as you would love, but again. It's December. So it's a definite 5 stars overall.
Great course but too dry
Layout at Bayonet is really, really good! I walk and it is a pretty easy walk and great views. Not sure what is going on with the turf but the fairways are suspect and the greens are too firm. The greens have too many slopes to have them that firm and fast. But the did roll great. Anyways, it is probably due to how dry it has been but you think they would be able to throw some water on the greens at least??? I would go back any time regardless and hopefully they can get back in good shape.
Needs water
Great layout but very dry. I played with a local who indicated they have no been putting money into the course and the turf did seem to be stressed and in need of water. This would be a gem if they managed the turf better. Perhaps this is COVID related but they seem to be getting plenty of play so I would question this as an excuse.
Fairways/greens
I haven’t played at Bayonet- Monterey CA in years. I was so excited to come back to this course to this challenging course. The views are still beautiful, but sadly the course was not in good shape. The fairways and putting greens looked like something had invaded the pristine grasses. Lumpy, hard and blotchy patches all over the course. We had a discounted price but I would have paid more to play somewhere else. Poppy Hills was in excellent condition- we played there the day before and enjoyed every minute.
Pins
Who ever set the pins must been having a bad day and took it out on us. Each hole had very difficult pin placements. Definitely Sunday pins in a major tournament. I’m blaming my putting whose on this but it is still a great course.
The fairways were a mix of numerous grasses... w more sanded divots than I’ve ever seen on a course, leaving a very uneven surface.. The real issue is your service... I made two reservations, however my friend hurt his wrist 3 days before we were toplay... I was not able to contact anyone at GN.. the site wouldn’t accept my password, send me a reset code, nor could I speak with anyone on your 800 number!!! I am stuck with a green fee due to you complete lack of service... you’re no longer on my radar... Evan Long.... 704-564-9929
