It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.

The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Bayo is awesome. I’m a 6 handicap and it is a great test. 10 years playing here and I finally know my lines. If you want pristine this ain’t for you - greens roll pure though..

A Bit Disappointing

I have played before and been happy but the course was in pretty poor shape this time around.

A have to play course

The course is in great condition and gives great views of Monterey Bay. Staff is friendly and willing to help. Some golfers are jerks and feel privilege and might start telling you things but just call the pro shop and let them handle it. It has happens a few times that I have played the course. Enjoy the layout and take your pics just keep pace.

Tough course, worth the trip

Bayonets reputation is spot on. It’s a tough track with wacky greens. If you’re used to having your way at the local short Muni, this will be a rude awakening for you. If you have to be accurate and on the fairway, more so than any other courses I’ve played recently (Harding being an exception). I usually do well on par 3’s and this was no exception. I’m not a long hitter either, so that got in my head as well. That’s more of an inexperience issue than a course issue. Overall, I can’t wait to play it again.

Absolutely beautiful!

A surprise! Didn’t know this/these courses were available. I’m certain the views were spectacular, but the rainy/foggy weather precluded the views. I’ll look forward to playing again!

Tough but Scenic

Bayonet is a tough track with narrow tree lined fairways and heavily undulating greens. Keep it in play and on the right tier and your score will be as beautiful as the ocean views the course offers throughout the track. Greens are firm but roll smooth at a medium-fast pace.

Fairways present tight lies throughout so be prepared

An enjoyable journey for sure.

Combo tees

Both courses need a combo tee of around 5500 yds for us older folks who still love the game and play often, but having to play 6000 yds at 75 is a little tough but we still want a challenge and around 5500 would be great.

Great course, horrible restaurant food

The patio overlooking the practice green used to be a great place to enjoy lunch. Since Covid, the food is literally not edible. Stale, dry sandwiches and tacos. Hopefully they rediscover how to prepare decent food sometime in the future.
