The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

most excellent course
Great course ! Grass a little long. Overdue maintenance being done and cleaning up still being done.
Beautiful course and Hint of Famous ARMY fort.
There were stunning holes at Bayonet, enjoyed every minute (even the bad shots), will come back soon! Well worth $ and time to get to the course.
Grass clippings everywhere including tracked onto greens. They cannot seem to catch up on grass cutting.
course was in poor condition. staff was very friendly and helpful.
Bayonet
Rode the Blues (6641/72.2/134) in 4H, 20M with Sam and Adrian on a GN Hot Deal. 2 local brothers and really fun guys to play with! Started out so foggy you could barely see 100 yards, settled into a thick, moist overcast around 60.
Really enjoyed this layout. Up/down rolling hills, lots of large traps, huge undulating greens framed by thick, mature trees. Easily one of the 25 best courses I have ever played from a layout perspective and if anything, the slope and rating is understated. Courses conditions were good overall but mixed.
Tees and fairways were the weak links. Not bad, semi lush with some poor spots on both. To their credit, the poor spots were being watered and addressed. However, not nearly as good as the rest of the course. Or as good as you would expect for a course of this caliber in this $$$ range.
However, the rest of the course exceeded expectations.
Rough was uniformly lush and thick. Really punitive when wet early in the day.
Traps were excellent. Thick, moist sand and exceptionally well maintained.
Greens were the highlight of the course. Loved these greens. Firm, medium fast and smooth. Irons would release and there were few ball marks because of their firmness.
Nice carts but they do not have GPS. Nice all grass practice area. Friendly clubhouse staff, starter and cart attendants. Running a tight ship and right on time with their tee sheet. Saw the drink gal a couple of times. Excellent layout, tough course that is well maintained. Highly recommended.
love this course
The white tees were positioned a little too far up on this day,,not as beautiful and challenging as normal
Nice course, below average maintenance.
Greens are firm and in very good condition, but overalll course maintenance is lacking for a course with incredible potential. Rough was a bit deep and needed pickup/raking of excessive mowed grass clumps. Bunkers need 1-2” more clean sand. Tees were just ok but many fairways are getting ruined with different turf types and lack of divot maintenance. Needs some serious agronomist help there. Overall condition is trending downward.
Very poor fairways and bunkers
The course has been very poorly maintained. The fairways are over run with tufts of long grass. The rough is covered with old grass clippings. Bunkers are like rocks
Sad to see what used to be a great course in such poor condition
Bayonet
we played at our own pace, nobody behind or in front of us. Greens were in great condition. most of the fairways are in great shape. closer to the greens the grass was a little tighter then i like. Employees were nice, the starter always seems to have control of both courses.
The weather was great, the 3 Mikes i played with were nice people.
Sad
I’ve played it many times but not in the past 3 years until today. COVID can’t be the reason, maybe the excuse. Played Da Lavega day before (it’s a muni) and the conditions were far better than Bayonet. Many Tee boxes were beat up from not repairing divots. Cut blades of grass lying on greens and clumps of grass laying all over fairways and rough More dirt than sand in the bunkers ! Just overall neglect of such a beautiful piece of property. Almost a crime from what it used to look like. I won’t make the trip again. Staff was phenomenal despite the conditions.
Course maintenance
They should cut the grass more often. There were huge piles of cut grass everywhere, because they cut the grass when it was too high.

My wife has respiratory and breathing problems. She is nervous every time I go out to play. (once a week) I asked Dennis if I could go out solo, as favor he made a call to the pro shop to ask for me.. I want to thank Bayonet/Black Horse staff for allowing me to play solo. My wife really appreciates it as well.
