It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.

The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

The best i have played

It is difficult but not impossible to play. It has many hills and undulations. You must hit the flat spots on the fairway. Take time to read the greens. There are a lot a ways that it can curve on the way to the hole. The greens are very fast. Pace of play could be better. I played when there were people playing practice rounds. It is a beautiful course with spectacular views. It is the best course for the money.

PGA Course for a great value

We grabbed a hot deal on a weekend for a great price & enjoyed the course. Fairways & greens well kept. Awesome views of the sunset if you have a later round.

Great course. Hard greens

Played this course last year when it was cart path only. Did not enjoy the frequent hikes across the fairways and some very tough lies.

This time it was 90 degree rule and much more enjoyable. The greens have been recently scarified and are very hard, fast and true.

Rough is short but tough to hit out of. Take your lumps and use a 5 iron.

Overall a very good day.

Great Course But Needs Work

I have been a frequent player at Bayonet for the last five years. I love the course layout and the opportunity to play one of two excellent championship courses at the same location. The staff is great, always friendly and helpful.

I lowered my overall rating because of a couple of items. One, the sand traps are very substandard for a course that aspires to be one of the best in the Monterey Bay. For the prices charged they should be in much better condition. They are very inconsistent, many hard and some with a reasonable amount of sand. Second, the tee side amenities are old and worn. Some holes have ball washers, some don’t. Spike cleaners are worn and useless. A small investment can make this small irritant go away. Finally, the length of the rough is very inconsistent. Short in some areas and US Open like in others.

These are two great courses that can be even greater with a focused investment.

East Coast Players

We don’t get too many views like this on the East Coast. We’ve played a few in this area now, but this was the best so far. Great views, challenging but achievable holes, and a fantastic rate on golf now!

High quality course

It’s no surprise that that the PGA use this course. Undulating course with lots of bunkers and slick greens with borrow. Hard but fair.

Just a shame they turned the sprinklers on at 8pm while we still had 2 holes to play..

SHOULD be better

Having played the course previously, I was a bit disappointed. The green fee was over the top, but I get it is US Open week, and tee tines are at a premium everywhere in Monterey. When you charge a premium fee to play the course, please have sand in the bunkers, etc, etc. . Green were fast as expected, but inconsistent from green to green. Still like the layout, but conditions could be better... much better

tough but fair

Tough course but fair, fairways were in pretty good shape considering the amount of play it gets. Greens were good and gave you a true role. Look forward to going back

Made it Back!

Last time I played Bayonet, was pre-renovations so I was thrilled to finally play a course I had been meaning to play forever.

I played Blackhorse around lunchtime and when I got done I popped into the pro shop to see if they had a twilight special. The guy gave me a $45 rate w/ cart for a 4:00 pm twilight special, even though it was 3:45. I was able to bop around in 3 HOURS with literally not another soul on the course. It was glorious.

- Bayonet was just as challenging as I remember (note: I played the . Seems like it never lets up.

- Fairways appear corridor-like narrow off the tee shots but when you get up to your 2nd shots, the fairways are actually wider than they appear on the tee box. However when you do miss a fairway, prepare for major tree trouble.

- Green appeared to be punched a few weeks ago so I didn't get a true appreciation for the beautiful and challenging undulations.

- Fairways were in great shape. Fast, firm, and super tight lies.

- Just like Blackhorse, beautiful bunkering.

- Friendly staff, nice starter.

IF anyone is planning a trip to the Monterey Peninsula, Bayonet and Blackhorse are absolutely must plays for the value. The layout of both courses is just too good.

Bayonet

The course is one of the great ones. The only complaint I have was the pace of play. Had to wait every hole. Never did see a course manager.

Pace was good, greens were punched but did not tell us online, staff was little careless, did not cart keys first and then did not give us score. Cards, and did. It even care. Plenty water available at the first and 10 tee,, restaurant was busy due to mother’s day, and no food cart.

We had hopeless hard docs only food available.

Aeration

Learned the course, fairways and greens, had been aerated without notification. Even though this was a hot deal on Golf. Now, The course recognized the issue and gave us two free rounds in the future.

This was a classy ethical thing to do and we really appreciated their consideration. The starter is a great guy as well
