The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Great round
The old Generals courses. Challenging layout. Very tough greens. Beautiful December morning
Golf course.
Course in excellent shape after all the rain. Card still allowed in the fairway.
Fast greens....especially for being so close to the ocean
Greens were much faster then Pebble, Bandon, or Torrey when compared to other courses so close to the ocean...I hit my driver as well as ever but still shot a 94 as a 12 handicap from the blue tees. Missed a tone of greens and paid the price as chips and long lag puts ran out all day. Greens are fast and tricky but true. Great value for being in the middle of the “‘Mecca” for American golf.
Challenging
This by far was the hardest course I have ever played steep hills but pretty!
Great day for golf
The course was in excellent condition and the greens were rolling very true and very fast! Putting was an adventure for most of the round. The food was excellent at both breakfast and lunch and the service was fast and friendly.
Amazing layout
Quite challenging for us 8-14 index handicaps but fair. Maybe if we played it a few more times it would not seem like such a beast.
Bayonet
tough course to challenge your short game, green was fast, hard to read breaks and if you over hit will run off green .
Super nice course with great amneties
Really fun course, free range balls ,well manicured all around, challenging ! A pleasure to play here.
Stunning views and a magnificent layout
I played theBlack Horse and Bayonet courses. There is one thing that they should sell in the club house for the serious golfer: "Complete Green Layout" The course has generally uphill greens, where the undulations are not known, false run offs are not to be seen, and with the greens running 13 on the stemp(spelling) meter, landing in a somewhat putt making position is nearly impossible. I only putted off the green three times; however, the other two golfers were having some four putt and higher greens.
The little booklet they sell in the pro shop does not cut it.
The course and all the pros and outside personal were top notch.
In spite of the sever handicap on not knowing what the greens held for me, I had a wonderful time, both days.
A whole lotta golf course
For the novice, aging, or high-handicap golfer, this track will test your distance, accuracy, chipping and putting...to the maximum. There is a whole lot of length to those second shots on the par fours and third shots on the par fives. To confound matters, many of the pins are tucked behind deep multiple bunkers, and the big greens have many multiple breaks, making reading them a bit of a headache. In short, this is a Whole Lotta Golf Course!
Sooo tough... wear a thick skin and take your medicine(s)
Beautiful day on the course, but a few things let to a serious mental beat-down. The rough was deep, thick and damp which is where I ended up a few times from the slope in the fairways. No consistent ball contact from there... The greens were maddening, with a combination of fast speed and quick, imperceptible breaks. Many of the greens have some serious slope and undulation which leads to approach shots trickling away from their landing spot, leaving you with much longer putts than the quality of the shot deserve. I've played here a few times a year for the last 30 years, from the blue tees until this year. Even with the substantial length advantage that the white tees afford, I was left frustrated by experience of shooting 90 against an 8 index. Love the course layout with so many unique holes, but I was muttering to myself on the drive home...Yes, I will be back!
Beautiful 36 hole golf course
Played here solo on a slow Thursday late morning. A foursome waved me through at the 4th which was nice of them. A lot of grounds keeper working that day. Needed some getting used to with the noise of their machines. A beautiful course I played Bayonet this time and had a great time. Some of the restrooms were too close to the tees and the noise I made affected some golfers, sorry guys did not see you teeing off because I was inside the porta potty! Tip. Take an extra club because of the sneeky wind on the back nine.
