The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Beautiful 36 hole golf course
Played here solo on a slow Thursday late morning. A foursome waved me through at the 4th which was nice of them. A lot of grounds keeper working that day. Needed some getting used to with the noise of their machines. A beautiful course I played Bayonet this time and had a great time. Some of the restrooms were too close to the tees and the noise I made affected some golfers, sorry guys did not see you teeing off because I was inside the porta potty! Tip. Take an extra club because of the sneeky wind on the back nine.
Exceptional conditions - greens outstanding
Pace of play for public course was great. Greens condition A#1. Very challenging course, golf as it should be. Staff all great people.
The setting and views!
Couldn’t ask for a better day! The fairways and greens were in great shape. The two fellows that we were teamed with were excellent company and I noticed everyone around as being very congenial. Pace of play was very good! We will definitely be back!
The course.
Challenging. Good shape. Maintenance crew is outstanding. Support staff enjoyable. Greens difficult. Bunkers good.
Drought course. For hosting the PGA championship in June, the course has slipped down. Port-a-potties on 6-that's it. No water! Take your own. Very slow 2 with no one in front. Backed up course-no Marshall.
Bayonet
This course needs help, fairways are a mess. The bunkers had no sand in them, we asked for our money back.
Staff was very professional and friendly. Restaurant food excelland!
Course should have colored flags to identify pin positions .
So-So
The course gets good reviews but my friend and I found it to be very average. It was extremely soft and in poor shape. Ground under repair everywhere and the greens putted poorly. Very challenging course and a cool layout but underwhelming overall.
Course is well worth playing and good value. It will challenge all golfers...good luck
I love the chilly weather
This golf experience was fantastic. Course is in good shape from tee to green. Very memorable tree lined fairways and seaside vegetation. Many downhill tee shots help too. I love this place. I'll be back.
Spoiler, recent aeration still evident and no warning given
I have played this Bayonet course several times and loved it but this time the course was still recovering from aeration and was not warned of it which was a bummer. Greens were on different levels of recovery which made putting very inconsistent. Most of the players moved to the other course which I should have done and regretted it. I do enjoy this challenging course, the wind direction makes you always play a hole differently each time you are here. The workers on the course were courteous and stopped to let me play which I truly appreciate.
Most beautiful fogbank I have ever played in
First time to Monterey Peninsula Golf. Play Black Horse absolutely beautiful will condition and maintain course I have ever played. Can't control Mother Nature sometimes you get the fog did for the first four holes cleared most beautiful sunny day for the next eight holes. Finished in the fog greens were Lightning Fast bunkers were great Fairways were perfect.
Careful at the moment
This is the first time I have written a review, I usually believe it is a personal opinion.
I love this course and play it frequently. I am posting this to warn, especially visitors, that the course is in very poor condition. This is due to the recent PGA Championship.. Yes it was punched but that is something I expect twice a year. Its not the reason.
Again, wait at least 7 weeks visitors it is not ready to play.
Play Blackhorse next door and enjoy same atmosphere if not quite as difficult.

Bayonet
Good course, not great. Lots of traps, sand so so. Needs better markings/maps from one fairway to the next tee. No refreshment cart. Good rough. Course well maintained.
Tough conditions
Greens and fairways were punched, but they gave me a Free round. I will back in a month.
Beautiful golf course
Gorgeous golf course and an excellent value.great layout and in pretty good condition. It could really benefit from a “combo” tee set as the almost 700 yards between the white markers and the blue ones is an absolutely huge difference in how the course plays.
I look forward to posing Black Horse the next time I get down there.
