The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Great course with excellent conditions.
It is a great course. I hope I get a chance to come back and play. Next time I would like to also play Black Horse.
Great way to spend a day.
This place was great, and I can't wait to get out there and do it again. My only complaint was that we only saw the cart girl 2 times in 5 hours.
Disappointed
Positives....the area is amazing. Looking at the the courses and clubhouse is very nice. The pro-shop pro was very good.....so was the bartender.
Negatives: the carts were horrible. They constantly shut off...as they are supposed to when you get near a green or in a restricted area...but these shut off constantly: First cut of rough, some dune areas not others,,,,even in the fairway about 100 yds away from the 18th green. There was no consistency with them at all. No signage on the course for restricted areas at all. Just total guesswork. I also asked how the greens were...they said running at 10.5, I'm not an expert but I'd say closer to 12 or 13. No white sand bunkers at all as pictured. etc. etc.
The bigger issue were the field reps...starter/ranger. The starter sent us out on the wrong course even after we clarified to him which course we were playing and let him know we had never played before. We realized the mistake along the way but couldn't turn back if we wanted to finish 18. A ranger approached us to get off the fairway with our cart...even though it hadn't shut off. We told him what happened and his solution was to give us the correct scorecard. And he basically flung it at us as he was puffing away his cigar.
This is a Troon course in Monterrey Peninsula and we paid a lot of money especially for a twilight rate. We had high expectations but were disappointed. Since pace was slow, we coupled up with the group in front of us and said there is a monthly pass you can buy for $350 and get unlimited golf. This was not good to hear. I cant see playing either of these courses again when I'm in the area. Way too many better options.
Classic layout
I first played here in the early 90's, this my all time favorite course.
Highly Recommend
Sprawling property, fun layout, a tee option for all levels, fast pace even though crowded, and in great shape.
Experience
4 hrs for 12 holes on blackhorse on 17th behind ladies tournament. Played bayonet 19th, starter was probably the worst customer service I've experienced in 58 years of golfing.
Perfect round
Course was in incredible shape and great views. Pace was as fast as we wanted after an 8:00 start (finished in 3:20)
Great Course
Fair but challenging. Views of the Pacific Ocean on some holes. Very well maintained. Greens were well kept . It was a lot of fun.
Great value for the money
The highlight of Bayonet are the greens, fast, fun and interesting. The layout is fun and the fairways are in very good condition. The green side bunkers are variable. The new white sand is great. The bunkers with the old tan sand are ok, but need to be replaced with the new white sand. As they space out the teee times, the place of play was great, we finished in 4 hours, never rushed and almost never held up. The course needs to have shoe spike cleaners installed on most if not all holes. Overall great experience.
Pro shop needs to be honest
Have played Bayonet many times under a lot of conditions. When I asked the guy in the pro shop before the round how the conditions were on the course, he said "great,"
Instead we got several fairways, Holes 1, 10 and 18, where the fairways were punched and heavily sanded. A lot of the bunkers were dug out and not playable. This is not a good look for a golf operation that has increased its golf rates on Golf Now to much higher levels. At the very least, the guys in the pro shop need to be honest about playing conditions.
