Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

10 out of 10

Ok so I’m a so cal golfer who’s used to playing the local muni’s for the regular get together to save money. When I want to play nice places and go a bit farther out we’ll do places like industry hills or maybe coyote hills or candlewood country club or maybe some rustic canyon then when we want to drive a bit more we might head down to Palm Springs when we fell ready to play in 90-100 def heat.. this past weekend I played the hay which opened up 2 weeks ago and it was awesome although tough with the 3 year old walking around and then we played Blackhorse - teed off at 7:00 as a 2some and man the weather was amazing and the course was in really good shape (now I’m not a reg so take this with the grain of salt based on what I said above) but the greens rolled nice (not super fast but it was a little wet out there with the morning fog) and the fairways were also in really good shape. The course is pretty forgiving I. That you can spray one out and still find it and have it be playable unlike some of those desert/mountain courses where you are automatically hitting a provisional because it’s surely lost. Imagine you’re playing a local muni with the cypress trees all around some rolling hills with perfect (compared to what you’re used to) greens, fairways bunkers and tee boxes all for $120 on a Friday in April what a great deal!

Good course, challenging

The course is laid out well; it is on the ocean side. This means that the wind can kick up and crank up the challenging factor by a few notches! We really enjoyed it. While the fairways are fairly straightforward, the sloping and wind can make it more difficult; in a good way.

Tough greens

Course is in great shape with a few exceptions. Apron areas to a few greens are really beat up and play is mostly off of dirt unfortunately.

Greens are excellent but tough as usual.

Tough course, greens are very challenging. Bayonet is a little easier to play.

Best deal around

Hard course though room to hit it off the tee. Greens are really tough - lots of contour and tough to read. Good conditions And great value for this part of the country.

Blackhorse

Greens very good. Fairways and short game practice area terrible. Had to roll your ball in the fairway for a god lie.

Challenging course

While the fairways appear wide and long, they are challenging. The wind can kick up and send your ball into the tree lines. The greens are difficult. But all said, this is one of my favorite Monterey courses, as it keeps you on your toes!
