Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

My wife and I played Bayonet and we loved it lots of bunkers but very playable Definitely play it again when we go back to Carmel.

Good layout of the course from first to eighteen holes.

I play white tees because of my handicap 17 and I was able to keep up and play within my handicap.

Value for money was tremendous. Finished in 2 1/2 hours. Only qualm is the difficulty. Greens have extreme slope. Bunkers everywhere. Can't beat the vistas or the weather.

This course is very hilly and the greens are extremely tough due its slopey undulations. I don't think there is one green that's flat in this course. And bunkers galore. A lot of bunkers strategically placed in common places most people hit to, so if your shot is erratic, you'll get to try one of their bunkers. Challenging but fun for intermediate golfers and up...

Great time playing Black Horse, greens are fast and hole positions were tough. Course is playing nice, and the weather was great.

Excellent track, very good condition. Mostly generous fairways& greens roll well-

No restrooms, only porta potties, Not good at all especially during Covid time.

All 8 of us felt Bayonet would a better choice.

This course is in great shape with well sanded and maintained bunkers, good tee boxes and tightly manicured fast greens.

The track itself is interesting and well laid out. The most challenging part of the course are the greens. Nothing is flat or moderate. It seemed like every putt longer than 10 feet had to go over or around some undulation in the green making it very challenging to read the greens with speed and line. A challenge I truly enjoyed! Can't wait to come back and hit it again!!!

Played fast and nice layout to test skills. A bit pricey for its upkeep but golf in this area is more pricey than other areas. Would recomend.

My girl is a very high handicap and I am an 8. We both can play from our tees red/black and keep pace with each other very nicely . Great layout and sometimes the pin placements are a little unfair but bang for your buck this is the best the Monterey bay has to offer.

I'll preface by saying that I'm a member of this course and I chose to play Black Horse 4/5 times over Bayonet. While Bayonet is a tight, tree-lined course, Black Horse is much more open... That said it's not necessarily easier. While the wider fairways and more open waste areas give you a better chance to scramble around, they green complexes on Black Horse are much more complex than that of Bayonet. This course can be played several different way, on just about every hole you have multiple ways to play the hole and several different shots that you could use to get the job done. The traditionally taught smart play of "Aim for the middle of the green" is often not the smart play at Black Horse. Every green has multiple tiers and ledges that, depending on where the pin is placed, will dictate where the smart play is. Often times the best play at Black Horse is to aim straight for the pin, while other times you will want to leave the ball short to prevent a slippery downhill putt that can easily roll off of the green. While Bayonet seems to get more recognition, Black Horse is by far the better course in my opinion. For the daily golfer, morning tee times can be pricey and for the price that is charged the course really should be in better condition, as there are several holes where the rough is less than ideal, however the greens are always in great shape and the fairways are perfectly playable. Bunkers have very little sand that is usually packed tightly, which takes some adjusting to. The course is walkable but be prepared for several steep hills and a couple of long transitions where you have a 1-2 minute walk to the next hole.
