Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Tough Greens

Tough greens, with tough pin placement. Layout is a little odd with some green/tee boxes very far apart for those walking.

Tough course

Greens are very difficult to read. Saw a coyote on the Corse it was very fun to watch him. Corse was fun, dry in spots and play was slow. Needed a Marshall to speed up one very slow group

Playing in the smoke

I’m sure that the view from this course is to die for, but played here during unbelievable air quality issues from the raging fires in Ca. Course is beautifully maintained, plays like a charm, greens will drive you nuts...I will be back and pray for normal weather and conditions here in the Monterey area.

Nice layout but course grass everywhere

The course layout is very challenging. Greens are as difficult as any as very hard greens that penalize you for not being accurate. What is so frustrating about course is the mow the grass and leave the grass clippings in middle off course. Every shot have to wipe ball. Also, in front of greens the grass is not even so even few feet off green can’t put for consistent roll as grass is not even. Recommend they pick up the grass clippings and better maintain grass around the freensc

Greens where great

We have played this course maybe 40 times in the last 5 years. So today we play Black horse and I hit a tee shot straight down the middle on number 1. We drive along the cart path into the fairway to my ball in the middle of fairway. No ball. Why you ask? It’s because the groundskeepers have mowed the fairways and all the wet grass is now laying in fairway so you get to play adult kick the grass to locate your ball. The entire course was like this. Black Horse and Bayonet are some of the best courses in Monterey to play. I know some people will say I’m overreacting but to present a course like this today was plain bad and showed just how the groundskeepers feel about what they present to the public. I HOPE A GM sees this review and can address this problem. It’s a simple fix; they make vacuum equipment for golf courses. Hole 17 was the worst. Your soft spikes filled so fast that grass covered your entire size 13 shoe. I’m certain this will fall on deaf ears, but I had to be honest in my review and it’s the sad truth about two beautiful gems that should not be presented that way. Because I can tell you, I did not get a discounted rate for a sub par course. If you’re going to charge full rate at least have some pride in your course. I think the GM FAILED TODAY. They should jump in a cart and tour the outdoor office because it does not look good and reflects poorly on you.

One of my favorite tracks in the area

I love this track, both Blackhorse and Bayonet. The courses are generally in great shape, and the greens are always firm and FAST. Both courses offer some ocean views, and challenging holes that will test both your distance and accuracy.

The staff is usually pretty friendly and helpful when needed.

I would definitely recommend both Blackhorse and Bayonet.

Blackhorse

The #2 course — but I think the most fun and playable of the 2. Better groomed. Tough large rolling greens. Fun and challenging

Black Horse Golf Course

The setup of this is good. We enjoyed playing at a pace that did not have us waiting or others pressing us. Other than an overzealous, curt marshal chiding us for getting too close to the green, we enjoyed ourselves. The fairways were often filled with grass cuttings and the rough is often very deep....

If this course were well maintained, it would be with the costly tee times.

Excellent value

Had a great time and can't wait to come back to play Bayonet. Great views and layout. Greens firm and fast.

Restaurant had excellent food. Only complaint was the food cart had no food just drinks, cookies and bars.
