Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Always a great day of golf
Black Horse is always a great place to play.
Tough greens and great views and challenging holes. Today some of the fairways were a little beat up and many had some kind of repair going on.
Still one of my favorites and I will be back
A must play in Monterey!
I thoroughly enjoyed my round of golf at Blackhorse. If you are in the Monterey area, you need to come play this course. The pro staff was very cordial and accommodating. This course offer a variety of different tee boxes/distances to play from. The handicap rating for some of the holes had me scratching my head though. The course set up had the blue markers playing up, and after playing, I would choose the black tees. I felt the course plays shorter than the 7,000 yards from the black tees. The course condition was perfect and the greens were rolling perfectly. Lots of variety of holes and very challenging Par 3's. I look forward to my next time coming back to play Blackhorse and will play Bayonet as well.
Finest courses in North America
These two courses are amazing..Challenging but amazing fun..maybe the best views of any course in California with the most amazing trees..The staff and the practice area are amazing
Especially don't go out after 2
The pro shop (who by the way the older lady in there is about as rude and unfriendly as they come.) put us with two singles. They played so slow that by the four hole we had two foursomes stacked up behind us and they did not care. This stressed me out so bad that I ended up picking up my ball and waited for them at the next tee until the eighth hole where I called the pro shop and turned us in. The marshal came out and I asked if my wife and I could leave these two and go play Bayonet. Well we get over to Bayonet and there is singles just walking from different holes on the course like they own the place and they kept cutting in front of us. One guy that cut in front of us was playing two balls to boot walking which we were now held up by him. Of course no marshal ever to be found there. Bottom line VERY poor management especially for the money they get.
Amazing
Did not want to give a positive review because this course is so nice I don’t want to see it get crowded.
Well worth the trip. I am a beginner and had no business playing this course but you only live once, so just do it.
Love Blackhorse
One of my two favorite courses on the Monterey peninsula. I'll return when it's not so windy.
Great Course
I love both of these courses. Very challenging greens. When you can find a good deal a round at either course is not to be missed.
Wonderful Course
Blackhorse is a wonderful course. Even though the greens we aerated a few weeks ago, the course was in good shape. It has some wonderful views of the ocean. While there are a few homes around the course, you really don't notice them. One of the best courses in the area.
Great golf experience
Played with a buddy our first time at the course range balls cart and golt 65$ plus a free replay because the had punched the greens we expected a tough time on the greens but they were in good shape
Not pleased
Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of the fact that greens and fairways had been recently punched and sanded before I played there otherwise I wouldn’t have booked it. It was like hitting from hard pan. The pro shop was giving refunds to players except for the ones who had booked a Hot Deal on golf now.
Very disappointing.
But under normal conditions this is a great course that’s why I recommend it
Great conditions with fast greens
I had a nice day playing with 2 others on Bayonet. The coarse is hard with fast greens even after recent rains. Do not fly it to the hole. Pace was good but got very slow for last 4 holes. They will aerate April 5 th to prep fir PGA club championship.
Amazing course
I've played Bayonet once before and really loved it, and just played Black Horse for the first time and found it equally amazing. The course is in great shape...fairways, greens, rough. Sand traps were a bit hard...just like the cart path. And greens were extremely tough and tricky. All in all an extremely enjoyable layout.
we played after several days of strong rains and the course was in great shape. Drains exceptionally well
A Local Favorite
It's hard to believe I haven't played here for 3 months. Blackhorse is one of my peninsula favorite courses. Conditions are usually above average (but not quite superior like Quail or Spyglass). Blackhorse is a challenging course. Every green has multiple tiers and breaks making the preferred landing area very small. In addition to that the greens are firm so holding approach shots can be difficult at times.
The layout is fun with several elevation changes throughout the course. Numerous views of the Monterey Bay help ease the pain of the difficult greens.
Greens are in decent shape but are in need of the upcoming maintainance next week. They are rolling a little slow (medium speed) right now. More than likely they haven't been mowed in a couple days due to the rain we've had this week.
Fairways weren't bad. A few thin areas but very playable throughout. Fairways were super soft due to the recent rain so roll out on drives was non-existent.
First cut of rough was lush throughout.
This course sits in a cooler foggy area of the peninsula. It's not uncommon for temps to be 10 degrees cooler at Blackhorse than at surrounding neighborhoods just a few miles down the road. It may be sunny and warm at your hotel but it can be cool and damp at Bayonet/Blackhorse. Come prepared with extra layers.
Also, unlike Bayonet, you will not go back by the clubhouse at the turn (or at anytime during the round). The beverage cart is regularly out during prime time and there is a cooler with bottled waters on the 10th tee box. Other than that make sure you are stocked up with food and drinks.
