Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Best Overall Golf Experience in Monterey
I have played Bayonet and Blackhorse regularly since the courses were re-designed in 2008. I've also played every other public and resort course in the area and most of the private clubs as well (still waiting for the Cypress invite...) Factoring in design, championship-quality golf, course conditions, location, views and PRICE, Bayonet and Blackhorse are the best overall options anywhere near the Monterey Pensinsula. Seriously. Both courses are incredible. And always in impeccable condition. Both are extremely challenging, but in different ways. Greens can be very, very fast but roll pure. False fronts, multi-tiered greens, steep-faced bunkers and elevation changes on your approach shots make scoring tough. And there are no easy two-putts to be had. Anywhere. Bayonet plays tight off the tee. Blackhorse is a little more open off the tee, but wind becomes more of a factor. Routing ensures that you will have to contend with the wind from all angles during the round.
Both courses play around 6,600 yards from the blue tees. And can feel longer (especially on windy days.) Tips are 7,000+ but really should be left for competitive players and scratch/plus handicaps.
Great range and practice facility.
Restaurant/bar is decent (great view) but there''s not much to it. No white tablecloth dining. No spa. No country club amenities. This place is about world-class quality golf and nothing else. And that's awesome.
True green
For the first time, I am playing so called poor man's Pebble Beach. Well, the truth is far from it. The course is in such minty condition. Its neither poor nor easy.
Green breaks true just as it supposed to be, fairway is in great shape if you hit it, the ball runs a mile and half, need to avoid landing on the wrong side of the green and false front, I have learned my lessons the hard way. Shot 43 in the front and 50 on the back. Can't really complain.
After all, its a great course to play. BTW, if you volunteer for the PGA championship which is in June this year, you will get a free round.
And the staff is very courteous and professional. I will give it two thumbs up and will play this course any given time in the future even though its a 146 miles round trip.
Pebble Beach rival
The course is always in pristine condition..not a blade of grass out of place..both of these courses are as good as Pebble..at 1/10th the cost...the staff understands customer service..and they are good at it..the crew on the course keeps the bunkers in great shape...fairways are very tight..rough is minimal..the greens will be what gets you...hard and fast...I always enjoy myself at this course..thanks
Great experience
What a beautiful course. Sweeping views of Monterey Bay plus a great layout and conditions. The greens will challenge the best of golfers. Fast and undulating. Forgiving fairways, and tough approach shots that require course knowledge. I was fortunate to play with some locals who provided much needed advise. Love this track.
Tough but fair
Bayonet is lined with tall cypress trees on many fairways so accuracy is a premium, play the proper tees for your game. Greens were firm and fast with subtle breaks, and nowhere near as severely sloping as the greens on Black House, the easier course off the tee. One warning: the practice bunker has very little sand in it and was nothing like the bunkers on the course which were fluffy. Two very enjoyable tracks in a beautiful setting with no houses to deal with.
Slow play
Pace of play was atrocious. Took over 5 hours. No marshalls on the course to monitor the course of play. I still have a headache.
Great Saturday Round
Played here for the first time after playing Bayonet the week before. Liked it a lot better than Black Horse. Got out at 7:20am and the course couldn’t be better. Greens and bunkers were perfect and the course played tough. Had a wonderful time.
As some advice, get there early as the pro shop back up looks like Highway 101 on a Monday morning. And beware of the starter with white hair and aviator glasses. If your not at his hut 5-10 minutes before your tee time, he will let you know it.
Bayonet
Best combination of quality and value in Northern California. Would play this before any other public course on Monterey penninsula.
Great challenge of golf. Wonderful layout. No two holes alike. Narrow but not too tight. Can play tougher and longer with afternoon winds.
Make sure to stop and take in the views. The military knew how to build golf courses.
Fantastic
Fantastic is a perfect one-word description for this place. Love it. Never played here before, but had heard good things about it. It lived up to my expectations. Beautiful course with beautiful views. Don’t miss!
???!
Sat was busy could use a few more Marshall’s and a driving range with more than 8 stations
But for...
Blackhorse was a pleasure to play and the staff was super friendly.
The only complaint (and this goes back over 50 yrs. when run by the Army) is not allowing fivesomes.
Noone has ever made a coherent argument for not allowing 5-somes. Blaming them for slow play is vacuous. If the slow player in a foursome plays slowly, do others blame foursomes? No, they blame the slow player. Owners, please wake up and realize a 25% increase in revenue with the same amount of tee times.
Best value in the Bay Area
these course Baynonet/Blackhorse are a must play if you are visiting the Monterey Bay Area.
The courses are a PGA qualifier making it a challenge. The fairways and greens are excellent considering that it is the winter season. Be sure to practice the downhill putts, the practice range needs to do away with the mats
Beautiful and Challenging Afternoon
Most fantastic Golf Course with such beautiful setting. Course will give you all the trouble you can stand and then some. What a course for such a fantastic price per round. Waiting for my next outing.
Plan ahead!!
This course is amazing but you need to plan ahead if it will be your first time on black horse. My suggestion is to come to the course a day in advance and bring the greens keepers gifts!! Beg them to put the pins away from the ridges. This time at black horse all the pins were put on crests and unplayable. The other 3 people in my group and myself, had blowup holes on approach’s that landed on the green within 10’ of the flag and rolled off into collection areas that were so abused they made chipping back up impossible. Horribly placed flags but the rest of the course is amazing.
Awesome
This was my first time playing at black horse. Let me tell you this was an awesome golf coarse in general but for 55 dollars it’s amazing coarse. Everything was in excellent condition. The greens I found to be the most difficult I have ever played. Most have 3 putted five time but still enjoyed the challenge. This is a must play if your in the area. Not to mention the views are extraordinary.
Difficult greens
Played Blackhorse for the first time. It is a great course with nice layout. Greens were extremely fast and very challenging. A downhill putt with a little too much speed can end up 30 feet off the green.
