Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Pick your poison
These 2 courses give you the opportunity to pick your poison. Black horse is wide open off the tee and has impossible greens or bayonet has tighter tee shots required but you’ll make the strokes up on the greens.
Awesome for he money!
Great course for the money! Pack food with you if you want a meal at the turn as the course doesn’t go back to the clubhouse and the cart girl just has bars and maybe a sandwich. When we went the greens were probably a little faster than normal which definitely added a few strokes.
Poorly run
Showed up only to find out they had tournaments on both courses, took 2:45 to play front 9, waited up to 15 minutes between shots. Got to the 10th, group on on the green, one in the fairway, one on the tee and one group waiting. Asst. Mngr., Mike, offered to credit us 9 holes and come back... really... I live an hour plus from this place. Disappointed every time I play here so I'm done with B&B. too many nice course to play other than this
Greens in Remarkable Condition
I've played this course a few times, but never seen it this good. It was a beautiful clear day, which made it possible to see all the way to Cannery Row and beyond. The greens were absolutely immaculate, hard and fast! Lots of undulation in the greens as well with tough pin locations. Better leave the ball in the right spot or very easy to three putt. The fairways were also in excellent condition, but some of the tee boxes were a little beat up... not complaining! The grounds crew was hard at work cleaning up a extraneous brush and it showed. The course was wide open, never waited. $59 is a great value If you can get out there during the week.
Greens can be ridiculous...but loved the course
Black Horse: More open than the sister course...some short holes (keep the driver in the bag), but the lack of length is made up for by some sloped and quick greens. 2 of the greens were nearly unputtable....All 4 players had to pick up on hole number 3 cause the pin location was so ridiculous even when below the hole you could putt passed it and role all of the way back down to the front :0....Overall fun to play, and would do it again...I like Bayonet better though
amazing weekend in Carmel
probably the hottest weekend this year in Monterey area,it was 88 degrees and greens were lightning fast almost to a fault. If you didn't hit the hole on the downhill putts ball was long gone most holes.Veiws amazing and fairways in great condition only complaint I have was didn't see the cart girl the whole round and it was hot.Are 4 some was dreaming about a beer most of the round.
Can't wait to return
Had a great day at this course. Greens are scary fast but now that I understand them I look forward to my next round.
Fast greens but beautiful layout
Fantastic track with very slick greens makes this a challenging test of your ability. Don't expect to shoot your handicap, unless you're playing your A game, but enjoy the beautiful location and occasional putt for birdie. Great value for the money with a hot deal!
Blackhorse review
The course has recently developed a grass disease. The fairways were the worst I've ever seen in 30 years of playing there. Hopefully, the greenskeeper figures it out.
Crazy greens
I had heard many great things about both courses at B/BH and most were true. I would have to say that the greens were a little too crazy for me and the rest of my foursome. I love a good challenge but it was all about luck on the greens. Many were saddle shaped with steep fronts and/or backs. Just couldn’t a handle on them. I preferred Bayonet of the two. Beautiful vistas on some holes, though.
Circus greens
The course is challenging but the greens put it over the top. Many are ruthless a couple are readable and the rest are somewhat in between. I would choose Bayonet of the two
Always a good round
Two great tracks, great ground crew and staff. Looking forward to full time grass range (not into mats) but a very good practice facility. Would like to have them announce start times, like most courses it's not a habit (or even done) anymore. Best deal on the peninsula by far, thanks lads.
Tough greens
Course was great layout except for very difficult greens and pin placements
Awesome
The course was in amazing condition. I've played here many times, but never seen the greens in better shape. The weather this time of year in Monterey is the perfect conditions. Definitely get out there and play it if you can.
Bring ur best putter!
Love this course! Location can’t be beat, course is spectacular. Fun to play. This time the greens were REALLY fast. So bring ur A putting game!
my wife and I enjoyed the round
The red tees make the course easier for the ladies. The greens are tough. But no water on the course and it is hard to loose a ball.
