thic course field is very poor
field condition is very poor
Great layout, poor condition.
What a pity the course is in poor condition, the layout is great.
greens and water
the greens are still in bad shape. they need to get all the grass out of the water, it looks terrible, saw some small dead fish.
Putting Surfaces are Unacceptable
I've played Pelican Bay - South probably 20-25 times and I've always enjoyed the layout. It's short but very tight, requiring players to shape shots around doglegs or lay up off the tee for position. If you can drive it long and straight you'll have lots of short iron approach shots.
The staff is friendly and met me at my car with a cart ready to go. The facilities are simple and spartan. It's not about anything but golf here. There's no driving range, so bring a weighted club to warm up with.
However, the course conditions have deteriorated over the years to the point that this course is almost unplayable now. I played early on a Saturday morning. It appeared that the rough (3-4 inches deep in some spots) had not been cut in several days and the bunkers also looked like they hadn't been raked in several days. Maintenance crews normally "mow and go" on weekends, but it doesn't appear that there is much maintenance going on at all.
The "greens" were mowed, but at least 12 of the 18 greens have as much bare dirt as they have grass on them. Clearly the heat and lack of rain we've had this summer have hurt the putting surfaces. They must not have the budget to keep the greens in good shape, as they are in dire need of a complete rebuild.
I'm saddened to see Pelican Bay South become what some would call a cow pasture. It's a fun layout with some challenging holes, but the condition of the playing surfaces is simply too poor to even enjoy playing here.
Until the conditions improve, I would avoid Pelican Bay South.
greens
for the most part its a good course to play. tee boxes are in good shape, fairways are good but some of the greens are in very bad shape. over all for the price its a good deal.
A Great layout
I've played all the Volusia county courses from LPGA to Tomoka Oaks , love the Pelican South course. 5 forced carries , no two holes the same. Yes there are as few rough greens and 2 less than perfect perfect tee boxes but I m only a 11hcp so most golfing problems are not the wind, bare lies or occational bumpy green. I play 10 or so rounds a month with 4 at Pelican South and love it. Slow playing whiners... keep away!
Don't believe everything you read in reviews. Pelican Bay South is fine.
My buddy had 4 passes for play and lunch, so we went. My first time here in probably 15 years. I had read the recent reviews and was worried - the conditions and pace of play were both portrayed as horrible.
There are some issues with some of the greens. 15 out of 18 are in good shape - minor blemishes that you will find at every public course in Florida this time of year. The other three are various stages of horrible - but overall it was playable. The greens were pretty slow - takes some getting used to.
The rest of the course is in excellent shape - fairways, rough, tee boxes. The sand traps were very hard - the best golfer in my group loves them that way and got up and down 4 out of 4 times. Me, not so much.
As for pace of play, we played 1:00 on a Sunday and only waited a couple of minutes once (after stopping at the turn for a quick dog). We played our round, including the stop, in 4 hours flat. Not too bad.
Overall a good track for the money.
Only 1 Con
Was on vacation from Denver and was very pleased. Courses like the south cost $100 plus in Denver but do better greens. Staff at both courses were awesome and remembered us from the day prior, will definitely play next time we are in town. Hot deal was great $16 for the north and played through on the south for $10!
very bad greens
the course itself is good, but most of the greens are in bad shape. tee boxes and fairways are very good. they need to redo a lot of the greens very bad
Rough shape
This course could be a very nice course, but needs a major amount of work. Several greens were so bad we had to play winter rules, because there was no real way to putt. Ball bounced and deflected all over the place.
Fairways were in decent enough shape, but had several bare spots. The traps were so bad that the course didn't provide rakes, mainly because they weren't needed. They were mud, with no fluffy sand at all. Trying to come out of a trap with a high lip was almost impossible since you couldn't get the club under the surface to pop the ball out.
Play was very slow...took over 5 hours to play our round, and we were a twosome.
Interesting Course
This course needs some work. Maintenance was not good and the signage was missing for a first-time player. For the price we had a good time but would not choose this course again. I'm sure it was once a great course but it has slid down hill for some time.
good value for the money
golfed here 4 or 5 times the past 6 weeks , greens could use some work but enjoy the course layout.
Pace of Play
It took almost 3 hours to play the front nine and we waited 45 minutes to play the 10th hole. We left before even reaching the green.
great staff
I have played this course before and I enjoy how the course improved everytime I play
south course
this course it self is good. I play there once a week for the past 4 months. the south course is a little rough. the back 9 greens some of them are very bad. there`s 1 or 2 tee boxes that are bad, but over all its not bad for the price
Great shot making course
This course has better shot making than the north course. A few greens on the back nine need some work. Enjoy playing the course very much.
Pelican Bay South
Tee box in terrible shape, greens have more sand than grass, fairways no grass, like playing on a cow field. Cost very low; but you pay for what you get.
Little concern for the enjoyment of the golfer
I played the course on a day that a company had a golf outing. Not sure how far behind the group I was, but by the time we teed off at the first hole we waited for a foursome ahead to tee off. BY the second hole there was three groups wating at the tee box. After an hour, we were only at the fourth tee so I called the clubhouse about the pace and they said they would see what they could do. After3.5 hours and nine holes nothing had improved, and I never saw a course official
Slow play
This was the third day in a row that play was very slow we started out with nobody in front of us, but after about 4 holes we ran into trafic - same thing that happened on the other days. People behind us could not wait and they started hitting into us. The other day we counted 4 balls that went past us. This last time the guy could not hold back either. He hit and the ball hit my wife. We went back to him and we let him go through even though there were 3 groups ahead of us. Groups we could see on every tee where we had to wait. He should hahve been able to see that as well. We did not complain at the office but I think you should know it. They should have a marshal on the course when it is so busy.
Better than anticipated
I had expected the course to be in really bad shape but was pleasantly surprised.
I had heard and read that the greens and tees were bad and that the fairway mowing was sporadic. People have told me not to play the South (Pelican Bay has a North and a South Course) because it is in really bad shape. It is or will be one of those Florida courses going to weed.
On arrival, I noted that there were only a few cars in the lot, a bad omen perhaps. I asked about a putting green and the person at the cash register told me that I could use the chipping green next to the first tee. The kindest description of that green is exceedingly ragged. When my friends arrived, we play and were able to tee off immediately.
The layout of the course is fine. It is (very) narrow but fair. The rough was not penal but with dormant Bermuda it can be hard to find your ball there. I have seen worse at better courses. There is lots of water, more so than on the North Course. Some of the greens needed a lot of help but on the whole they were playable. The greens were slow but relatively consistent. It is not LPGA Intl (actually no comparison) but on the whole not so bad. We went around is less than four hours (four players without knowledge of the course).
The course appeared to attract more players after 8:00 AM and appeared busy when we left. One's pace of play may depend on when one tees off.
The course has a snack bar, which we did not use. We didn't see a beverage cart but didn't expect to. The staff is small but friendly. No driving range (that I could see) and the putting/chipping green rates a one star (it exists).
This course is a great value so don not listen to the nay sayers. I probablywill play again this season.
what are doing to course right know asfar as airating seed sand on greens
