Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

First time
Greens were in excellent shape. Staff was friendly only negative...Fairways were freshly cut but all the clippings were left behind
Didn't get Robbed at Robbers Row
Very nice track. The staff was very friendly and informative, as it was my first time playing the course.
A few of the holes are tight/narrow and not very long. All expected for a golf course on HHI. The greens were a little slow but in very good shape, which was a positive trade off. It is very nice to see greens with minimal ball marks on them, confirms folks who are playing are fixing their marks. I would definitely play it again. Even the Ohio State Fans i played with were very nice guys.
Go Blue!!!
Thanks for playing and your feedback - I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the experience!
Worst course on Hilton Head.
For the price they are charging, it’s horrible. They are at a premium price on the island. Conditions are terrible, pace of play wasn’t enforced. You can’t let a foursome of 30+ handicaps tee off and then let another foursome tee off 8 minutes later. Not going to happen. Took 3 hours to play front nine. No yardage book, no water on the course. For $106.00, you’d expect a premium experience. Felt like a local municipal course in every way. Will never play here again.
Great experience
Went with Wife, Son & Grandson. Staff was friendly, accommodating and helpful. Not a pretentious country club, and good for visitors looking for a fun day
Thank you for your visit and playing at Port Royal! I'm happy to hear that our team made you feel at home.
Learn golf etiquette!
My son and I very much enjoyed our first 6 holes, had to skip 7 and 8 because of SLOW players, who would not let us through!
Need a ranger! Besides that, the round was great! Wonderful people work there and help out. Make sure you try it!
Thank you for the round, your feedback and recommendation!
Friendly staff and good layout
Staff was friendly, welcoming and attentive. Greens recently aerated but overall course in great shape. Will definitely play here again.
I'm happy to hear that the team made you feel welcomed! We appreciate your visit and hope to see you again.
Worth a play
I thought Robbers Row was a good play for $60 but probably wouldn't be worth much more than that. The layout is average. Fairly short, but some good holes. A few sharp dog legs that are difficult to judge the first time around without GPS in the cart. Definitely a few holes that need some knowledge off the tee. Fairways were pretty narrow, but no challenge for a long hitter because you could survive with 4 iron off the tee all day (mainly why I give it a "good" rating; not the fire I was expecting). It is definitely a Pete Dye renovation and not original design. I didn't really get the Pete Dye vibe much at all, but I could tell were they tried to incorporate it slightly. All in all, a great vacation course that won't beat you up. Greens were in great shape. I would go back and play it again. Snag the hot deal and its worth it.
Good Course
Course was in good shape but not worthy of $100+ dollar green fees..
Good course
Better than expected, Tight fairways. Nice grass on fairways that were mowed well. Greens were slow but in real good shape. Bag drop is allowed and personnel was excellent. Good value for the money
First Time Playing Robbers Run
Nice course. One of those you want to play more than once.
Nice fairway and greens. Traps needed sand .
Very friendly staff!
Great course and practice facility
Played once in the morning rain and gain in the afternoon heat. Scored about the same on each round but loved the course both times. Staff is great and very friendly during the current COVID situation and the practice facility is great! Worth adding to your HiltonHead must play list.
Fun and Challenging in very good Condition
Played this course a number of times. Very challenging but fair. I really like the course, I just wish the service was a little better.
Great range area, with extensive short game practice area and great conditions to work on your short game and get ready for your round.
Great course layout. Fun and challenging holes with lots of variety and challenges. Typical southern course with lots of beautiful, old oak trees and lots of Spanish moss hanging from the trees. The course is very open, but lots of trees along the fairways which adds to the fun and beauty of the course.
Tee boxes and fairways are in great shape. Greens are in fantastic condition with very few non-repaired ball marks, but a bit furry and slow today. The greens are on the small side which puts a premium on your iron play. The bunkers had plenty of sand but last night it rained very hard so the bunkers had not yet been raked and worked so the sand in the bunkers was compact, but understandable due to the heavy rain last night.
The bad part of the day was that we only saw the beverage cart one time (hole #2). It was hot and VERY humid today and there was no water on the course due to the COVID-19 conditions. To have a VERY BUSY Saturday with tons of golfers and only see the beverage cart one time was awful especially since you do not go by the club house or a snack bar at all during the round. The overall service at the course seemed to be lacking today. We were greeted at the bag drop and were told that the course was super busy with backup everywhere due to the number of golfers out today.
A great day
Played this course a number of times. Enjoy the layout. Challenging but fair. Fairways in great shape. Greens a bit furry. Overall a great day and we joined another twosome so we wouldn’t be waiting so much in each shot. Played in 4 hours even with a bit of waiting.
Thank you for playing and your feedback! I'm glad to hear the staff made you feel welcomed, and we hope to see you on your next visit to HHI.
