Hyde Park Golf Club
About
Hyde Park Golf Club, built in 1925 by Donald Ross, is one of the oldest in Florida. In 1971, the golf course was purchased by former touring professionals Billy Maxwell and Chris Blocker, who have successfully restored it.
Rolling hills, gorgeous Spanish Oaks and towering Southern Pines make Hyde Park a lasting experience. A tour stop for the men's and women's professional golf tours in the 1940s and 1950s, the golf course gained a place in history during the 1947 Jacksonville Open. The great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par-3 sixth, which became known as "Hogan's Alley." It has a deep-faced bunker to the right and water to the left.
Hyde Park Golf Club measures 6,468 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71, and it has a slope rating of 124.

Old classic, needs some work
Hyde Park is a classic Donald Ross design that any true golf fan in the area must play at least once for the sense of history. It is a beautiful piece of land, with some rare rolling terrain, stately oaks, few palm trees - it feels almost nothing like Florida. The back nine especially has a great collection of holes featuring elevation changes. The tees are in decent shape. The fairways are brown and there is no seperation between "fairway" and "rough" - if you can hit your ball and aren't behind a tree then you are in the "fairway". The greens are well kept and lush, though there was a mix of winter and summer grass due to the recent tempature fluctuations, and they are cut a little high and are therefore on the slower side, but there are few dead spots. A little pricey at $40 on weekends, but for an ocassional trip it is worth the price to be a part of Jacksonville and American golf history.
Nice older course with potential.
Nice older course with lots of dog legs. It has some water and plenty of bunkers. The greens need some work. Fairways were in OK shape. Pace of play was slow. There was no starter. It seems a lot of courses have done away with rangers and starters as cost cutting measure. On the weekends you need a starter at least till twilight starts. All in all an enjoyable afternoon. Hopefully the spring will be kinder to the greens than the winter was.
First visit, will be back!
Course was in really good shape from the tee box to the greens. Course is beautiful and has lots of neat changes in elevation. Wish they had some ball washers but thats a simle thing. Pace of play was really good.
Hard
The golf course has a good layout but the fairways and greens are hard like concrete. I cant see myself playing here anytime soon. It needs a little TLC.
Great History, Course Attention
The Layout of the course is awesome it is a Donald Ross built in 1925 enough said. The Fairways need attention hard pact and need some grass. Greens need more attention from a really good greens keeper slow and grainy, also while you are fixing things up how about some attention to all the bunkers on the course. Bunkers need to be trimmed out with some attention to detail. Has the potential to be a great course just needs a Greens Keeper who is excited to get it back into shape.
Great Old Course
I've played this course a few times a year since the mid 80's. It is the classic southern, old school golf course. Tree lined fairways, undulating greens, but less water than most. I would definately recommend this old school beauty. Only thing, DO NOT take a cart out of numerical order, or you WILL be scolded.
Old But Fun
Its an old course but fun to play good lay out and a little changeling but Fun.
The people and the history can't make up for the course being let go.
The fairways and greens are worst than any municipal course. Could be lot of play, but sure looks like neglect. Too many bald spots in greens and grass in fairways is gone in most landing areas. It's a shame because of so much potential.
decent course.
Don't worry about tree time, because there's no starter. Maintained course with some wide fairways and some tight ones.
Good Value, Old Course, Fun Day
Good Value, Older course, had a fun day. Nice little course for he value, I would def play again. All in all, the course does require a little attention here and there, but is pretty well kept up for the most part. Tee boxes were nice, greens could be a little better, and fairways were fine. Pace of play was fine, just don't expect anything pristine, but for the price not a bad deal at all.
This course was a great course for me to play
Highly recommend a course that is not expensive and fairly easy to play.
Nice Course
Would return to play again. enjoyed this course.
fairly easy course. great for beginners
Slow day
Played on busy day and had to wait on every hole. Just lined everyone up at first tee and waited your turn. Had tee time but that wasn't honored. Desk personnel left something to be desired. Treated rather brusquely, let people cut in front. Didn't get the impression that they cared about my business.
Course was decent and will give it a try on a less busy day. Had some interesting holes and if could play it without the waiting would be much more enjoyable.
Need to get the green cut and need to be rolled them
Course need to work on greens and not let 6 poeple go off at one time
Over priced!!!
Greens are in bad condition...over priced...no beverage cart...
Needs an overhaul
For the history that this course has, it's definitely not worth the weekend/holiday price. I'd pay $20 max for the shape the course is in right now. Half the greens resemble greens, the fairways have grass but that's about it.
Many holes have a ton of character and this could be a real gem in Jacksonville with the history it has (Donald Ross design/Ben Hogan played here).
Whoever agreed to place the cell towers in the center of the course was a fool. The support wires extend across several fairways and the towers are an eye sore. Probably did it for the money. Mr. Maxwell should get a group together for some major renovations as this course has potential.
You can't in your right mind charge $40 to play this course when you can play North/South Hampton for $49.
If you want to try it out, play during the week, don't' waste your hard earned money on the weekend.
First time playing Hyde Park....pleasantly surprised!
Some fairways were a little patchy but greens and tees in good shape. You can definitely see Donald Ross's design throughout. Good value for the money....will play it again.
The price is reflective of the condition of the course. It's great to be able to play a Donald Ross course.
The course is obviously very old and historic. The staff was friendly enough and the ladies working the cafe and bar were superb. The greens were not in good condition.
Good not great.
Greens need some work. This once great course has seen better days and the greens are in fair condition. Overall though, fun course and good deal for the right price.
Old style course
The course is an excellent test of skill for all levels of player. The greens are quick, and some have lost their bermuda which can be tricky, but overall the course is a good test.
