an enjoyable round of golf
The was in pretty good shape considering all of the snow we just got rid ofWet but not terrible.
Good option for beginner
Has a bit of a municipal feel to it, but I’ve gotten excellent deals on greens fees. Wide open enough, where it's a good option for beginners. If you want a reasonable round of golf without lofty expectations, I'd recommend it.
good place to play
play there all the time good course. going to play there this weekend
Nice course for a nice price
The course was in nice shape and a little challenging but not so difficult it was unplayable for the average golfer.
Same old course
I used to play this course as a kid. It's under new management but its still the same course. Grass tees at the driving range are beat up. Course has the same hole layout that he always had.. Tee boxes, fairways and greens are in good shape. Just an ok course. Worth spending $35 or less at.
Great value and overall good experience
Prince William was challenging but my group had a great time. Play from tee to green was moderate but we all agreed it was fair. What we said constantly is that the greens are TOUGH. If you have not played this course before be forewarned that the greens have lots of undulations and slope so putting can be challenging. Overall, we had a great outing and may do it again. The price coupled with the speed of play made this a great outing.
Be Ready for Slow Round
The course has improved enormously over the years. The greens are in good condition and roll true. Contours and pin placements can pose challenges on most holes. The biggest issue at Prince William is pace of play, but frankly, I have no clue how to improve the pace. The course gets alot of play and many players are average to mediocre players. Most are should be taking the USGA's "while we're young" promotuion to heart. Unfortunately, I don't think they get the joke. After a 5 hour round on Sunday, I guess the joke was on me.
Great value not too far from DC
Staff is very friendly and professional and helpful; we really felt important. We were paired up with two locals who were also friendly and made for a great round. Some of the tee boxes were a bit sparse, but not to the point where is affected play. Some of the forward tees are temporary while (it looks like) they are being rebuilt as elevated tee boxes. Fairways are mostly in good conditions, and the greens are in really great shape. Course is mostly open, with some forgiveness in many, but a few holes need a target shot off the tee box. Overall it is a fair course with some good challenges and in as good a shape as any muni course in the area. Round was a bit slow due to some slower foursomes up front, but other than a backup on number 3, it was tolerable for a Saturday. Most greens sloped down from back to front, allowing for some aggressive approaches, but also making for some challenging putts. The greens rolled smooth and quick. A really good deal in the DC area. The locals said the course has improved significantly over the past three years. My wife and I rate it a definite "play again" course.
The Right Price.
The course is moderately priced and was better than I expected. You don't often find good courses like this with so many open Tee times on a weekend. Beautiful setting. Just the right difficulty for a 15 + handicapper.
Much Improved
This course has come a long way in the past few years. It used to be referred to as the "Dust Bowl", but now it is very nice. The fairways and greens are in great shape.
A few of the greens are very tricky with the undulations and can have some down right evil pin positions.
This course is great for new or high handicap player
You don't have to hit it long on this course to have a good score card. The fairways and greens are well maintained.
Great Course for the Money
This course is always in great shape, and one of the best values for the area. With other, more expensive, course in the area, I believe this course can be overlooked when it shouldn't be. It might not be the most difficult course, but it has a nice blend of forgiveness and challenge.
Decent Municipal Course, Outstanding Staff
Prince William GC is a typical municipal course with a few noticeable exceptions. The first is the staff, which is super friendly and the starter actually gives you a pre-round intro, letting you know the water points, bathroom points, currant pace of play, local rules/policies, and more all with a smile. You don't see that even from the more prestigious clubs.
Secondly, the course layout is unique in that there are no Par 5's on the front 9, then two Par 5's back-to-back on the back 9. Not sure if they did this to try to speed up play but it's interesting if nothing else.
As for the course itself, you'll find a landscape that is well-maintained if not the highest quality. The greens are what you'll remember though, some of the most challenging greens in all of NOVA. It rained throughout my front 9 so I had to try to read wet, soft, smooth, medium speed greens with a lot of obvious and hidden breaks. Making anything over 7 feet is truly an accomplishment here, but they don't seem unfairly hard.
Due to the time and weather, I had no issues with pace of play but like any place, it can get backed up occasionally. There are normally marshals out on the course but the thin crowds didn't require them today. Very good course overall, and you can't beat the staff there.
Grass Well Maintained
When golfing in the middle priced courses, I expect the greens and fairways to have decent grass. The course exceeded my expectations. The grass was well maintained on both the fairways and greens. There were several strategically placed water hazards and the sand traps were well maintained.
The only negatives (and they are very very minor) were the crumbling cart paths, a gas powered golf cart that had trouble getting started, and we didn't see the beverage cart until hole we made it to hole 9 (a bit late). I was really craving a beer.
If you don't want to spend a fortune, this course is a solid choice and worth the money.
Course in great shape!
This course is in great shape, well manicured - greens rolling fast and true.
Great job to the maintainence staff. The inside staff could be a bit more courtesy and the food needs better preparation. Eat before going to this course or bring a lunch.
Good round but a bit slow
Saturday morning play was slow, but there were marshals keeping an eye on the pace of play and troublesome groups. Course is in above average shape.
The course was ok but not worth the price for golf.
The course was fair. This was my first time playing here and I expected more. The front nine was fine, in terms of crowds of people but by the time we arrived on the 10th hole, there was a foursome waiting, and a foursome in the fairway. We did not stop at the turn, therefore I can not explain how the back-up occurred. The back up lasted until the 18th hole.
A course ranger would have saved the round. A slow group somewhere ahead got us in a bind.
A good challenge. newly aerated greens offered some thoughtful putts.
paired up with a cuple of warm, friendly locals.
Not on Weekends, Not at Full Price
For some reason The Casper Group feels that patron should pay premiom dollars for courses in the county that can be characterized by slow play, average conditions and average layouts. Prince William is no exception. This used to be a decent little course to play late on the weekend , or after work with friends but now has become so expensive it is laughable. If given the choice look in another direction for better golf and better value.
This course is nicely maintainly and friendly.
I recommend this course to any duffer who is looking for wide fairways and fast greens.
