The Grand Bear Golf Course
About
Unlike some Jack Nicklaus golf courses that have earned a reputation for being among the world's most difficult, mid- and high-handicappers stand a fighting chance at the Grand Bear Golf Course. Nicklaus offers wide fairways before the sprawling woods take over on either side, most bunkers aren't horribly steep, and greens generally have room in front to run a shot up. The winding Biloxi River helps build Grand Bear to a dramatic finish. The par-3 14th hole plays through a chute of woods to a green guarded by the river below that runs along diagonally, punishing hooked shots left short. After another par 3 on the 16th that plays with the river to the left, the 17th once again plays over the river on the drive, then parallel to the hole. The 18th hole plays long and uphill back toward the clubhouse.

Grand Bear
Very Nice Facility! Worth the price and extremely friendly staff!
Tough test of golf!
A fine test of golf. Greens were protected by bunkers and holes were placed strategically. You have to golf your ball here.
Friendly staff
The course was very fair but punishing if you hit the ball in the wrong spot. Greens were very smooth but a little slow due to airification 4 weeks earlier. The fairways are wide and you won't find a bad lie. The staff, from cart boys to starter to inside staff all treated us as if we owned the place. They al greeted us with smiles and any info we may need.
This course is great
My wife and I really enjoyed the course and friendly staff. Our only complaint was the food was very average and extremely expensive. $20 for 2 hot dogs and 2 cokes was definitely not a bargain. We saw 5 deer running across the 10th fairway.....pretty neat !!!
Incredibly well kept course with great staff
From tee box to the pin, this course was in absolute perfect condition the 2 times I have played. I will definitely play again.
Nice course
Incredible layout, tough, yet fun. Staff was extremely friendly, and provided 1st class service. I'll play again.
This course was a good challenge. Fairways nice grounds really beautiful.
Greens were really slow. Carts need to be replaced. Adding GPS would be nice.
Great Golf Course
This course is in excellent condition. The holes are varied and interesting. The fairways are wide cut the water hazards, bunker and undulating greens make it a challenge.
Great course
Amazing course in the middle of nowhere...the staff went above and beyond to make me feel important and the course was in excellent shape.
Jack got the best of me!
This course was amazing. It's in the middle of nowhere but once you are there, it's fantastic. I played shortly after a major rain storm so there were some water marks on some of the fairways, but the staff did a great job of keeping it manicured and playable. Greens were slightly bumpy, but the guy I was playing with said it was not normal. I asked the staff when I made my reservation if they had aerated like my local course had and they said they were doing it the day after Memorial Day weekend....so that's probably why they were bumpy. If you stay in the short grass, you will have optimal shots into all the greens. If you played where I did most of the day, you play from trees, pine straw and garbage grass. I drove in from Florida so I was not in optimal playing shape....at least that's the story I'm going with!! All in all the course is great and I'm planning a weekend trip with my buddies in the future. The only downside was the carts....all of them were in pretty bad shape. From ripped seats to brakes that didn't really work and squeaky parts. With the price of the round of golf, I felt like the carts should have been up to par.
Best on MS. Gulf Coast.
This was the 2nd round I have played on Grand Bear. The first round was in the Fall of 2013. Just as great 2nd time around.
SPECTACULAR
Its a long ride, but looking at the map it looks like its next door. Jack Nicholas but a special place in the forest. No sounds but the wack of the ball and golfers statements when shots did not go their way. And you have to do everything and use every club to make a par if you are so lucky. We played the miss the backs are a "Bear" play on words but reality. The most immaculate course we have seen in this area, sure the Oaks, etc are similar but did not go
An easy day
Called a friend up for a friendly round of golf. Since it was mid-afternoon on Easter Sunday, not many were out. Pace of play was fantastic, giving way for enough time to really focus on shots and putts. On a day where not many were out, it really gave time to really appreciate the course.
A few other "friends" were out as well: a large deer, an alligator in the creek that hugs the left side of the par-3 #14, and a large red fox squirrel. If you are looking for a course with no distractions, this one is it. There is no residential development, and it has some really scenic holes.
As far as difficulty, it certainly has that if your tee shots go awry. It penalizes a bad shot, but rewards solid shots. It is a longer course. Greens are receptive and roll fairly true, but they could be in better overall shape. Nice open practice facilities. Staff has always been extremely friendly!
There are many great course options on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, but if you are in town for a weekend, this one is a must play.
great teddy tee boxes
Wonderful lay out.Fairways were great! Saw wildlife. Some of the greens seemed like there was very little grass, maybe the winter greens were dying off? But I would play it again,I played last June and the greens were excellent!
Wonderful, friendly staff, and we saw the refreshment cart frequently, which was wonderful as well!
Bring your short game
Put up a big number, but this is still my favorite course on the Coast and maybe my favorite in Mississippi. It was in tremendous condition, even after all the rain we've had over the past few weeks. The greens were very fast, even before the dew burned off.
Short game is crucial on this course. The bunkers are deep (even in the fairway), and the greenside bunkers frequently pinch the approach such that you can't easily roll the ball onto the green.
The good news is that the fairways are very forgiving.
It's a real treat, and if you can swing the local rate (they haven't asked for ID either time I've been), then the value is unbeatable.
Certainly worthy of its name
Jack Nicklaus is often criticized for making courses too hard and too much to his own style of play, but Grand Bear certainly isn't one of them. Sure, there are a few left to right holes -- all courses have them -- and if you play the back tees, it's all you want and more, but this a beautiful, well-thought out design in great condition. It's also on a beautiful piece of rolling property with lakes, streams and rivers, which make for a terrific four hours or so, no matter how you play.
Hidden Gem
Nice track - bit off the beaten path; worth it if you get the golf now rate of $42; but rack rate of $109 is much too steep. Greens were ok; but I played Rock Creek in Fairhope, Al the next day and the conditions at RC were amazing lush and super fast greens at much lower rate $59 - back to grand Bear the staff was great overall was nice nothing great....
Always a good outing at Grand Bear
Course staff was very friendly and helpful. Mark, greeted me when I drove up, assisted with bag out of the car. He was also waiting at 18 green at the end of the round to clean clubs and assist with any other requests. The Pro shop attendant was friendly and efficient in getting me checked in and ready for round. The Starter (can't remember his name) went out of his way to make me feel welcome. Personally escorted me to No. 1 tee and gave me course instructions and number to clubhouse if I had any other questions.
