Hell's Point Golf Club

About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Hells point
Course was in bad shape for mid May. Tee boxes were mostly dirt, foot tall weeds in the fairways on the back nine. Lots of bare spots on fairways. It’s a shame because it’s a fun track to play.
Not a bad course, but not a great one either
I’m a local and have played here on two other occasions in the winter months. I was very impressed with the course layout and the surrounding natural beauty thinking the course would absolutely beautiful in the spring. Not so. It was once a crown jewel in the Virginia Beach golf scene but it’s seen better days. Tee boxes aren’t very well kept, infrastructure is beginning to crumble, bunkers need work, and the fairways had lots of onion grass growing in them. Bright spot is the greens are well kept. Weather can be a factor here because the course is built around some swampy areas and with the high water table in Virginia Beach it can take a few days for the course to completely drain after even a light rain. Lots of wildlife to see; particularly the reptilian kind. It’s not uncommon to encounter several varieties of snakes during a round. We saw three cottonmouths, two copperheads, a red belly, and a black snake so be careful when retrieving balls out of bounds. Bring plenty of water. There were plenty of water stations around the course but none of them were supplied with water and it was a very hot day. A couple of portable toilets were located in a central area where a couple of holes merge around three and twelve I believe. But I’d approach with caution as they’d be perfect areas for snakes to cool themselves off on a hot day. Decent clubhouse and snack bar. Small parking lot and for safety reasons you must drop your clubs before picking up your cart and you cannot take the cart to the driving range which is about 100 yards or so from the clubhouse entrance. You can take the cart to your car to unload after your round is complete. No outside alcohol but snack bar offers a reasonable beer package providing a very nice ice cooler you must return at the end of your round. Staff is cordial but didn’t get a really encouraging friendly vibe. Have heard stories from others who have played there about some less than positive encounters with staff over what they perceived to be reasonably trivial matters but there’s two sides to every story and we didn’t experience any negativity. All in all an average course at a fair cost. I’ve played a lot of average courses and in my experience most of them have one or two charming bright spots that would make you want to come back. This is an okay course but with all the other options in the Hampton Roads area given a choice I’d play somewhere else.
5/12/25
Course in bad shape. 7 inch weeds in the middle of the fairway, most tee boxes complete dirt or mud. Really a shame the conditions of this course.
Beautiful landscape but poorly maintained course
Not worth the price when you can play at other courses that are half the price with better quality fairways. The fairways were like a 70s shag carpet. Every shot was like hitting out of rough because the grass was so poorly maintained. I could justify the price if the course was actually good quality. Only part that was good were the greens.
Birdies Galore
Played the 5800 yard course which is a bit shorter than usual for me. Glad I did. I made six birdies to match my all time high. Greens were in nice shape and not too fast so you could give the putts a run. Lots of fun.
Rude staff
Staff barely talked at the front desk, the guy you get the cart from wouldn’t allow you to load cart and wouldn’t give the cart key to you until 4 mins before tee time. He also wouldn’t give any direction or guide you but instead you had to play 20 questions to figure out you couldn’t take the cart to your vehicle. Very rude about it like he had all the power on you.
Price was too expensive for the experience.
Great Course off the beaten path
Our round was a good experience. Not much sand in bunkers and greens were slow and hard to predict but for an off season outing it was a great experience. Fast pace of play and not crowded like most other courses on a weekend.
Kinda ridiculous
I arrived at the course and was told I’d be paired with three other people. Fine, no problem. But they never showed up. My wife came with me, and since it was just me, I asked if she could ride along. To my surprise, they wanted to charge me the same price as a full round for her just to sit in the cart. Seriously? That’s ridiculous.
On top of that, the course itself wasn’t impressive. I get that it’s winter, but the conditions felt neglected. Between the poor service and the disappointing course, I won’t be coming back.
Invest in your course
Have loved this course for years. Unfortunately it the owner is not investing in his investment. Sad to see this jewel diminish into what will inevitably become an Owl’s Creek scenario. Course layout and difficulty are second to none in the area. Hope the owner wakes up and starts making positive changes.
Great layout, Horrific tee boxes
Played this course numerous times over the years... It’s a great challenge with the most unique layout in the area. Greens in great shape and cart paths are slowly being improved.
BUT the one thing I cannot understand is the absolute lack of attention to their tee boxes. It’s apparent they do nothing as they are horrible both winter and summer. Zero grass, just bumpy uneven dirt leaving you wondering around where the least worst spot is to put your feet and tee.
Would love to see some of the attention from the greens directed at the tee boxes as well, as those are the only two spots each player is guaranteed to interact with on each hole.
Glad it was dry
Course is challenging and tight! You can tell it’s a wet course when it rains. But we were fortunate not to have rain in weeks. It was in good shape, tee boxes could use maintenance.
Rude staff and poor conditions
The staff was not very friendly. They tried to rush us off the course after we were not allowed to have a cart until after our tee time. On our last two holes, they tried to rush us off the course. The tee boxes are unkept. Overall, would not recommend.
