Hell's Point Golf Club

About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

The greens were in great shape. Photo submitted by wadedaffinee on 07/23/2014
Good value
Course was in good shape and our mid-afternoon tee time mid-week meant we weren’t pushed by other golfers. Fun afternoon!
Hells Point is disappointing
Use to be a nice place to play. It’s not well taken care of. Many of the tee boxes were not well kept. They aerated the greens, and didn’t bother to tell you. Definitely not worth $50.
Enjoyable time
Played from the forward tees. Wide fairways, typical beach course terrain. Greens had some crab grass. Great price and enjoyed my 9 holes.
Awesome layout
Very enjoyable experience. Great mix of doglegs and forced carries over water. Greens were a little slower than I am used to but I would still go back and play again.
Needing help
All tee boxes need help. Also need a stretch of dry weather. Does not hold water well
Worst Manager. Don’t Play Here.
I was a member when I moved here and the manager has always had it out for me. I’ve been stopped on the course by others asking if I had a bad experience with the manager too. It’s clear he’s awful when he can’t keep staff. There has been some amazing people come through there, only for “Mr. Miyagi” to run them off. It’s a shame. It could really be a locals secret and a nice course. But he makes it completely unbearable. Owners need to recognize before it’s too late.
Someone needs to buy this course and bring it back
This used to be one of the best courses in the area. The new owners have neglected it and not kept up with the maintenance. They obviously don’t care and it’s a shame
Shame!
Played the purse after 2days of rain, so was likely to be expected. However at the time of booking there was no mention of the back nine being unplayable and that holes 2 & 3 where unplayable due to the weather previously until we turned up at the Pro Shop. No discount on the 8 holes we managed to play and the tee boxes from the 'white' tees were in awful condition. Such a shame.
Nice layout, terrible tee boxes
Not a bad course for the money but also not a good course. Tee boxes are terrible, greens seemed like they not cut for a day or two, very slow. Course is laid out very nice. Put some money into the course and it could be a really nice course. The beer girl did come around a lot and on a hot day it’s nice to get cold water/beer. Staff wasn’t the friendliest either.
Over booked and over priced
Arrived to multiple staff members yelling at the cart boys. It was just not a good overall experience. Pace of play, range, atmosphere all bad.
Zero star Staff and golf course
Staff is horrible. Especially Mr. Miyagi. They let us book a 5pm tee time for 18 holes without any warning of them closing at 7:30pm. They would not let us finish the round even though we had over an hour left of daylight and only 4 holes to play. Would give them zero stars if it were an option. DONT PLAY HERE
June 12
Course is not bad for or the price, needs $$ put into it looks old and kind of run down. Was an ok experience for the price.
Great course I'll never play again
I love this course. Too bad staff is ordered to be insulting. They will rifle through your stuff looking for contraband. No carts allowed to go to range. I booked and paid online so at check-in I was not given receipt. Guy at cart barn didnt believe me so he went in to office to see if I was lying. I wasnt planning on going through TSA to play a round of golf so Hells Point lost 3 customers today
Worst course in Virginia Beach
I’ve played here many times before because it is a cheap course. I tried to take my girlfriend today, she is new to golf, but they turned us away because she was wearing a tank top which is against their dress code. The outfit she was wearing was fully golf appropriate and has been worn to other courses before without an issue. There was nobody in the parking lot (figures) so you would think they would want some business, apparently not. Other than that incident we had today, the course is in terrible condition, the tee boxes are the worst I've ever seen and the managers like to follow you around while you play and watch. Overall not a good experience and everyone I know who plays here feels the same.
