When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Zero star Staff and golf course

Staff is horrible. Especially Mr. Miyagi. They let us book a 5pm tee time for 18 holes without any warning of them closing at 7:30pm. They would not let us finish the round even though we had over an hour left of daylight and only 4 holes to play. Would give them zero stars if it were an option. DONT PLAY HERE

Great course I'll never play again

I love this course. Too bad staff is ordered to be insulting. They will rifle through your stuff looking for contraband. No carts allowed to go to range. I booked and paid online so at check-in I was not given receipt. Guy at cart barn didnt believe me so he went in to office to see if I was lying. I wasnt planning on going through TSA to play a round of golf so Hells Point lost 3 customers today

Worst course in Virginia Beach

I’ve played here many times before because it is a cheap course. I tried to take my girlfriend today, she is new to golf, but they turned us away because she was wearing a tank top which is against their dress code. The outfit she was wearing was fully golf appropriate and has been worn to other courses before without an issue. There was nobody in the parking lot (figures) so you would think they would want some business, apparently not. Other than that incident we had today, the course is in terrible condition, the tee boxes are the worst I've ever seen and the managers like to follow you around while you play and watch. Overall not a good experience and everyone I know who plays here feels the same.

Disappointing

Got to course only to find out front nine was closed, greens were punched and sand packed however no mention of either on web site when I checked. Course itself was very wet, some bunkers filled with water and many areas unplayable. Staff was not very engaged, overall disappointing with a layout itself quite interesting if conditions were better maintained.

Decent course. Not great after lots of rain. Horrible staff, very rude and odd rules with checkin and starter process. Do not recommend. There are better courses in the area for less money and less hassle.

Hells Point

First time playing this course and being a local I’m sorry I haven’t gone sooner. The course is in very good shape for winter; very well maintained. It’s challenging, but not overly difficult. Hit the ball straight in the fairways, and you’ll be fine. There’s several water challenges that provide workable solutions for every skill level Pretty course, there are some aesthetic issues that take away from the natural beauty (pond retention bulkheads need some maintenance and there are some bumpy sections of cart path) but these have no effect on play. Mid sized clubhouse with snack bar and pro shop. Small, well groomed practice greens and adequate driving range. Desiring to minimize parking lot traffic you must leave or carry clubs to the bag drop when arriving. Some membership levels allow members to pickup at their car but everyone can drive the cart to drop off after finishing the round. You also have to carry your clubs to the driving range. Beyond that HP is a great course for the value and I look forward to playing in the spring and summer.

Awesome staff, Awesome layout.

I've played this course multiple times over the past few years and find it to be very unique and challenging for any skill set. I'm a 7 handicap but I've only broken 80 about 40 percent of the times I've played here. The 2nd hole seems like a regular straight par 4,but it's really narrow, and surrounded by trees, and a creek. Definitely gotta keep your shots pretty straight on the 1st and 2nd and the 3rd hole for that matter. Lol just hitem straight and you'll be fine hahaha. I really do like the entire layout of this course. I've seen reviews about the staff and the course that don't add up. I've always been treated great here. The gentleman in the pro-shop and his son as a starter have always been courtesy and professional. People complain about not being able to drive the carts in the parking lot or the practice tee but most courses don't allow for carts in the parking lot for insurance reasons. And the range is set up off of the parking lot as you drive in therfore no carts. If you don't like carrying your bag to practice, all you have to do is, park near the range, get your balls, and after you hit, put your bag in the car and then park near the cart barn. People shouldn't complain about rules that protects the over all functioning of the course. The cart path only rules protects the condition of the course as they strive to provide you a better place to play. The course is great to play as it is but it's going to be in really great shape soon and the layout is 2nd to none. Enjoy it while you can at the price it's at now. 5 out of 5 stars for customer service and 4 for current conditions and 5 for working on making it better. I would recommend this course to anyone.

Beautiful Track But Needs A Little TLC...weird cart rule

I am a mid-handicap weekend golfer (28 years old) and was excited to have booked a discounted twosome at the end of the season (early fall) for a buddy and was pumped to give the course a go because I had heard a a few 'back in the day' stories that made the place sound like it was a top tier track for being public....long story short I'll be sticking to my Portsmouth/suffolk courses thank you very much. The turf is better cared for and the staff is much friendlier. At least my home courses seem to appreciate my business and conversation. Cannot say the same for HP.

Breakdown:

-Pulled up and was off to a good start with the young gent running the pro shop getting me squared away with my check in and a range token.

-Walked right past the ball machine since it was my first time and I forgot to ask where the machine was while checking in (the poor machine looked like it was about to fall apart, which I would not expect from a course with such a price tag)

-I then went to grab the cart to take to my truck and load my bag in the cart (like every other public course in the area) but apparently they don't do that there and you have to carry your bag from the lot to the cart area and load up there (which was inconvenient because I had a mini leaf blower as well as my golf bag/rain gear) not the biggest gripe but enough to mention because it caught me off guard. Cart attendant (older gent) was also not the most friendly but the weather was iffy and I can't blame him.

-After my warm up bucket I went back to the cart area and the older gentleman was not there so the younger guy who checked me in sent us off and checked my reciept but apparently that wasn't right so the first cart guy came flagging us down in the fairway asking for my receipt (which of course I couldn't find because I put it somewhere once we got the go ahead at the cart barn from the younger lad) There was no one else playing and I had been there for over an hour...he cleared my tee time the first encounter so I'm not sure what the big deal was. All that before I even realized how iffy the course conditions were.

-There were areas of green side rough that were like tufts of grass growing on a beach. Then 10 ft to the left (in what should play as a similar turf type) it was normal, thick grass with actual dirt.

-The early fall/end of season conditions definitely made it tougher to play and im sure some of the turf inconsistencies are coming from winter maintenance/prep but man for just under $50/person (*DISCOUNTED*) I'd expect to see a little more TLC or at least some sign of it.

-The Facilities appear rather run down and outdated (i.e. ball machine) and the course seems to have seen its prime. Maybe someone can put in a little extra love next spring and get her back to where she can and should be. Beautiful track, lots of potential, little lack of love lately. 6/9 semi fine.

Solid

Went the day after a night of rain and bunkers were flooded and even parts of fairways were so wet, the ball was sunk in mud to the point you couldn’t find it every time. Definitely gonna go back in better weather because the course itself seemed relatively well taken care of. If you’re in a hurry, do note that you HAVE to wait for your tee times here, won’t get cart keys until it’s your exact time.

Nice course, rude staff

Long story short…rude staff! Tee time 2:06. Teed off at 2:12 because attendant refuse to give me the key to my cart until my tee time despite no one on the course in front of me. Too many nice courses in the area to deal with the rude staff at this one!
