Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Hells Point
Course was in great shape. A bit wet but not unusual for the location. Staff was great! Slow on the Friday after Thanksgiving --some folks out that don't normally play. Best maintained bunkers I have sen this year in VA Beach. Had a great times.
I like the layout. It has a number of unusual holes that were very challenging.
Whenever I go to Virginia Beach I like to play this course. It is fun and usually not crowded.
Greens are in bad shape
The greens on the front 9 were the worst greens in Hampton Roads but the greens on the back 9 resembled a respectable golf course. Fun course though as a few of the holes had water in play (or a small creek you didn't see when you were teeing off) and lots of trees that made you hit a good tee shot. Doesn't play really long. I just think the course is overpriced for the conditions of the greens. Might be better now but who knows.
the greens a disaster
I read a couple of reviews concerning the greens which stated a great improvement since Aug. I think now I will play at the golf course now that I read the greens are in better condition. I hope there correct in there review ill see.
Good course and value for the price.
Fairways in pretty good shape. Front nine greens need some TLC, very fast and had some spotty dead grass. Back nine were in decent shape, and very playable. Good pace of play. Overall good to excellent value for under $25 during weekend.
Great deal!
The course was in excellent shape. There were only two problems. First I was rushed off the first tee due to what I guess was a men's league so no time to warm up and second there was only one person working in the pro shop. He was running back and forth between the checkin register and the grill. Very understaffed. Overall good experience once I pulled away from the league.
Course is looking a lot better
Course is looking a lot better than it did a month or so ago. It was fairly busy, but we were expecting that on such a nice day. Me and the other two golfers I was with had a great time and will definitely play here again.
Wonderful Fall Golf
Great time on a great course. Not crowded, had a wonderful time and it was a beautiful day.
Very disappointed
Our group hadn't played there in awhile and we will not be back until they redo the greens and get the course back in shape,The pro told us they lost the water pump and that's why the greens died but they sure didn't tell us that while we were paying and needless to say you wasn't getting a refund,Very disappointed as this use to be one of Va Beach's nicest courses but now it's at the bottom of the list.
Not up to par
Very disappointed with conditions of course overall. Front nine greens in poor shape. Back nine somewhat better. Collars around all greens in horrible condition. Speed of play excellent since very few golfers playing. Made me wonder if this course will exist in a year or two. Needs some tlc as it is a good layout
Where was the Marshall?
Gorgeous day. Busy course. had a 2:09 tee time- teed off by 2:20. Played behind 3 two somes and then a 5. The 5 group did not even come close to ready golf. Watched them on the next hole looking for a ball (balls) in the woods for FIVE minutes. Meanwhile there is a pair on the tee, a pair waiting behind the tee, and a pair on the green in front of us. 2.75 hours later, we quit after 8.5 holes, but we DID get a rain check for 9 holes. Found out the group of 5 were members. Unacceptable.
One more note, greens were average, at best. Fairways were in phenomenal condition.
I will return, love Hells Point. Just a bad day, for sure.
Greens and tee boxes need attention
Played Hells Point while in Virginia Beach on vacation. Played in early afternoon and was only $25 with cart per person so price was great. Mixed reviews I read were taken into account but price was great as was playing with my dad who has not played in a few years due to hip and knee replacement and does not hit ball very far anymore. We enjoyed the layout but greens were very rough as were many of the tee boxes. Conditions improved on back but still found a lot of dead areas on greens and tees. Staff was very friendly but beverage cart only went by once, and when I say went by that is exactly that, she just drove by. We played in about 4:25 so pace was ok but twosomes that were 2 groups behind us were complaining about our pace, even though we waited for twosome in front of us on almost every shot. Never saw a ranger or we would have mentioned the fools yelling at us from behind while we waited. Overall it was a good choice for our group but would not play there again unless conditions were improved. We played VB National later in week for $39/ player and WOW, what a difference.
The Downslide
Hells Point used to be a great golf course. Very challenging; long; pretty course. However, time, as well as limited budgets and poor ownership, have left this course in decrepit shape. In fact, I can't remember playing a course in such poor shape. Ever. The greens are blotchy and difficult to get a fair roll. Traps in horrible shape. Parts of greens and the course are cordoned off for "maintenance" but it doesn't look like they plan on improving those areas. They are just roped off. This is too bad because it is a nice, challenging course. But without new revenue and management, Hells Point is not likely to return to its former standing as one of Virginia Beach's best courses. Bottom Line: it's cheap for a reason. Still challenging, though.
Nice Course
Nice course to play. Nice layout and very challenging. Will come back once greens are in better shape.
Enjoyed the design of the course!
The holes are beautifully laid out among the woods and water. With healthy greens, this will be a stunning course.
Current Conditions
,A few months ago the pump house that housed the irrigation system was vandalized and destroyed causing us to go without water for a while; therefore, causing the current situation with our front 9 greens. The Superintendent and his staff are working diligently to get the greens back to the excellent condition that they previously were in. They are currently building a new pump house and plan to recover hopefully by September. The rest of the overall golf course is in great shape.
Overpriced
The Bad: I have played this course several times and I have never seen it in pristine condition. Something is always under construction. It is marketed as one of the better courses for this area and probably was at one time, but is no longer. The green fees don't match the value. I never play there without a coupon. Narrow fairways and they are not well manicured. The course does not drain well. The Good: Pleasant staff, greens are nice/challenging. Challenging course. Course is not in a neighborhood. Overall its ok but there are simply too many better valued options in this area for me to recommend this course. Hope this helps.
Great bones but awful greens.
I love this course and have played it almost every summer for twenty years. This time the greens were in such horrible shape that I don't know if I'll ever go back. And to make matters worse, it seems that shoddy maintenance and too much water may be the culprit. The greens are so soggy that every ball mark is a crater and the ball gets mud on it. I really hope they get their act together because otherwise this course is so much fun.
bad
Don't waste your time or money playing this course right now. The greens are terrible, the fairways are dried out in some spots. There was some moist areas around the course when we didn't have any significant rainfall. Overall I thought they should have closed the course down for a few days to a week and get the course back up to par.
Disappointing
It was disappointing to play a course that used to be in great shape. The tees and greens were beat up and short on grass. The aprons were like rough full of crab grass. The fairways were at least mediocre. Additionally I found out I could have paid a lower green fee if I booked through the Hells Point website. $35 instead of the $40 I paid booking through Golfnow. This course unfortunately is on the low end of courses in Hampton Roads.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
John,
We're sorry for your recent experience here at Hells Point. Our pump house was vandalized and destroyed a few months ago so we were not able to water our front 9 greens efficiently. We are building a new pump house and hope to recover our greens by September. Please email me your address or contact the Assistant Pro here at Hells Point and we will send you complimentary round passes. We hope you will give us another shot.
