Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

The greens were in great shape. Photo submitted by wadedaffinee on 07/23/2014
must play
the course made my list of must plays as I am only here in the area for a short time. It looks better on the internet than it is. It is a nice course for locals, but not worth the hour drive from Portsmouth. there are plenty of place just as nice with out the drive.
No picnic in the park
The course was in great shape, despite the LARGE amount of rain received over the last few days. Course was nice and soft. As with all courses, shots in the fairway are a premium. Sand traps were FIRM due to all the rain. Overall a nice course for the Hot Deal we got from GolfNow.
Fairly tight
A lot of water and most holes were well bunkered. We had a lot of rain the night before so naturally some of the bunkers were unplayable but the others had been raked and were in good shape. Driving it straight was the key to this course if you don't bring a lot of balls.
In good shape
Haven't played here in awhile but course was in good shape and will be back for sure it was nice because it has been dry which is usually rare for this course.
Overall in good condition but tees could use a little work
Title pretty much says it all. Overall course conditions are very good, and the greens verge on excellent with smooth putting surfaces. Pace of play was good, but it was a fairly quiet Wednesday afternoon. I could see that at a busier time, especially in the summer, tourists getting in their occasional round of golf might slow things down. Advice given by others to keep an eye out when venturing off the fairways is warranted as much of this land was originally swampy, and it's easy to disturb a snake's habitat. That shouldn't keep you from playing, however, as this is a very good Rees Jones design that has held up well over the years.
Good time
The course was in really good shape, but watch out for snakes when the ball is not in the fairway. Overall the course has some pretty neat holes.
Nice course, though I would not pay full price to play here.
The course layout flows nicely and offers some nice challenges for all skill levels. I played the white tees and was happy with the round overall. The tee boxes were my only real complaint. They were very torn up, browned and sand filled. They really need some seed instead of sand. The markers really need moved more often and the boxes more maintenance. Paying full price would not be an option on this course, Golfnow prices make it worth it.
Well-maintained with a great staff
We played as a foursome with some guests from Florida. All of us were impressed with the condition of the course. Most notable was the friendliness of the staff. We asked the starter if we could go out a few minutes early. He drove out to the first tee to check, then escorted us out there. The cart that my wife and I were in was moving rather slowly, so he traded it with his. He was extremely polite and friendly. We will play there again.
overview
fun track. tee boxes need help, fairways OK, greens very good. Course needs a Marshall to keep things moving. Group in front was driving on the greens and tee boxes. If the course was soggy like it usually is, it could have caused major damage. No beverage cart on a weekend. ???
Course in great shape.
Played by myself on a Thursday, even though I had two twosomes in front play moved steady.
Greens a fast and tough to read.
Great layout
This is a very nice course layout. The tee boxes were in terrible shape to be so early in the season. It is a shame this course is not maintained better as it could be a beautiful course. It was a great value at $25 dollars for a round.
Course conditions have improved greatly.
The course is laid out well. You will have to make some shots to get around this one. Course conditions have improved greatly over the past few years. If you haven't played this course lately do yourself a favor and tee it up here again.
fun round for the money
Fun round of golf, a twosome really backed things up. Would have been nice to have Marshall speed them up. But still a very enjoyable round of golf for the money.
Great Course, Friendly Staff, Good times!
My buddy and I were down (From PA) for a golf trip and this was our first time playing the course. The area had just received a significant amount of rain so we knew the courses would be wet. With that said, this course was in great condition, all things considered. We were very informed regarding course conditions by the staff and considering the conditions this early in the season, I can only imagine how nice the course is mid-season. Definitely will be back!
quite the challenge not for the novice
Excellent Rees Jones course very tight and challenging .Am going to go back and play on a better weather day. Love the secluded tee boxes and the staff was very friendly. A very good experience
Hells Point (E2)
Greens were good, but most of the fairway was roped off because of some spots that probably needed time to repair. Due to rains earlier in the week there was still a lot of standing water.
Nice PreSeason Round
Course was in good shape for preseason. Staff were all very friendly. Greens were in good shape. Sand traps do a good job of protecting errant chip shots!
Very well laid out and I liked that most tees were well away from previous hole (no need to worry about other players hitting into you). Once the fairways green up I'm sure it will present an enjoyable experience for any golfer....
Should have mentioned.....
They should have mentioned the fairways were brown due to spring prep and the greens were just aerated.
Great course
I can't remember the last time I was able to play in February on a sunny day with a 65 degree temperature! That must have been why it was so crowded, that or the overbooking by the staff. All in all had a great time, love this course.
Winter Conditions
The course was soaked and the day started in the low 50s which happens to equal my average score. The greens are true and challenging reads. Overall the course was in good shape after all the rain. Made the turn and the temperature dropped, score was inversely proportionate. The greens dried a bit but the fairway remained soggy. Not that I found it that often. Also, I was fortunate enough to have purchased 2 sleeves of sponge Bob balls. I am pleased to report they all are resting comfortably in their home. Threw the last one in as a gift. The staff were excellent and the course was challenging. Loved it except the cold.
