Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

overview
fun track. tee boxes need help, fairways OK, greens very good. Course needs a Marshall to keep things moving. Group in front was driving on the greens and tee boxes. If the course was soggy like it usually is, it could have caused major damage. No beverage cart on a weekend. ???
Course in great shape.
Played by myself on a Thursday, even though I had two twosomes in front play moved steady.
Greens a fast and tough to read.
Great layout
This is a very nice course layout. The tee boxes were in terrible shape to be so early in the season. It is a shame this course is not maintained better as it could be a beautiful course. It was a great value at $25 dollars for a round.
Course conditions have improved greatly.
The course is laid out well. You will have to make some shots to get around this one. Course conditions have improved greatly over the past few years. If you haven't played this course lately do yourself a favor and tee it up here again.
fun round for the money
Fun round of golf, a twosome really backed things up. Would have been nice to have Marshall speed them up. But still a very enjoyable round of golf for the money.
Great Course, Friendly Staff, Good times!
My buddy and I were down (From PA) for a golf trip and this was our first time playing the course. The area had just received a significant amount of rain so we knew the courses would be wet. With that said, this course was in great condition, all things considered. We were very informed regarding course conditions by the staff and considering the conditions this early in the season, I can only imagine how nice the course is mid-season. Definitely will be back!
quite the challenge not for the novice
Excellent Rees Jones course very tight and challenging .Am going to go back and play on a better weather day. Love the secluded tee boxes and the staff was very friendly. A very good experience
Hells Point (E2)
Greens were good, but most of the fairway was roped off because of some spots that probably needed time to repair. Due to rains earlier in the week there was still a lot of standing water.
Nice PreSeason Round
Course was in good shape for preseason. Staff were all very friendly. Greens were in good shape. Sand traps do a good job of protecting errant chip shots!
Very well laid out and I liked that most tees were well away from previous hole (no need to worry about other players hitting into you). Once the fairways green up I'm sure it will present an enjoyable experience for any golfer....
Should have mentioned.....
They should have mentioned the fairways were brown due to spring prep and the greens were just aerated.
Great course
I can't remember the last time I was able to play in February on a sunny day with a 65 degree temperature! That must have been why it was so crowded, that or the overbooking by the staff. All in all had a great time, love this course.
Winter Conditions
The course was soaked and the day started in the low 50s which happens to equal my average score. The greens are true and challenging reads. Overall the course was in good shape after all the rain. Made the turn and the temperature dropped, score was inversely proportionate. The greens dried a bit but the fairway remained soggy. Not that I found it that often. Also, I was fortunate enough to have purchased 2 sleeves of sponge Bob balls. I am pleased to report they all are resting comfortably in their home. Threw the last one in as a gift. The staff were excellent and the course was challenging. Loved it except the cold.
Well maintained course
Great course for not having played it before. Well maintained and green were in good shape, but a little on the wet side. Several holes were in the process of being repaired/cleaned up. Active maintenance on a course is a good thing. Too many in courses have just fallen to the wayside.
Nice layout
Course has a fun layout with some challenging holes and some great risk/reward shots. It was extremely wet and the fairways were brown and dormant but it was december! I imagine it would be quite fun in the spring, summer and early fall. Greens were in pretty good shape considering the weather. Played in under 3 hours as a single playing 2 balls. All in all I enjoyed the day.
Hidden gem in Virginia Beach
Course is pristine and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
Another set of forward tees would make the course
more senior friendly. However, it is a really nice course.
Great Course!
This is a nice course. A number of holes have semi private tee boxes, which creates a feel of being on your own course. Most fairways are narrow and greens are well protected. The greens were in great shape, smooth and fast on the day I played.
If you have trouble hitting the ball straight off the tee you can get in trouble quick. The only bad thing I can say about this course is that it gets too wet and mushy with the slightest bit of rain. Most holes are cart path only due to the softness of the ground. However don't let that detour you. . .I love this course. It has great variety of long par 4's with shorter crafter holes. Fun and Challenging!
A real fun course
Been wanting to play this course for a long time, my golfing partner Dennis had played it a couple times years ago, he wanted to go back, the tee time on GN was the one we needed and we played we now plan on playing it weekly.
A chalenging course
Hells point is a picturesque and challenging course with narrow fairways, lot's of water and bunkers in play. Considering the previous days weather the course was in fairly good shape although there was a lot of mud in the fairways and some standing water and wet spots. The greens were in very good shape but very slick. The length and design of the course is not conducive to walking....I logged 6.18 miles of travel during my round based on GPS, so walking through the twisting meandering paths between holes although a wonderful walk in the park but for the average golfer it's a trek.
Great Round of late Summer Golf
Course was in excellent shape despite recent rains. Ground was damp, and carts were restricted to paths only. This made play slower than normal, but the players caused most of the problems.
The tees and greens were in excellent shape. The fairways were damp in spots because the rains but for November this was above average golf.
Definitely going to return in the near future!
