Black Gold Golf Club
About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Highly recommended
Initially, was a bit hesitant to play, given it had only been two weeks since the greens had been punched, but was pleasantly surprised to see how quickly they'd recovered. Fairways were nice and rough definitely lived up to its name. The entire facility, from practice range to the entire course was beautiful and lush. The course plays a lot harder then you'd think from what the scorecard depicts, but felt it was an honest test of ones skill.
Punched greens
Went to the course only to find out they punched the greens two days before. Wasted booking fee, my time and my friends time.
Great Day
This is the second time I have played the course--- great condition.... would play it again....
Love this Track
I've always loved the layout of the golf course. Great views from the back side down into Anaheim. Greens are always good, however, ball marks need to be repaired more often so fix a couple other then your own when you play. There was some work being done on the fairways so in quite a few places they were very thin and patchy. But my guess is they'll be back to normal in a few weeks and as the weather cools down they should grow in nicely for the fall. Greens are most likely being punched within the next week or two, so after that things should be great. Overall only 3 stars because of the fairways and very patchy rough. Should be cleaned up over the next month though.
Great design and elevations
Excellent value for a super course.
An OC must play.
Not worth the money
I am an Orange County local who loves to support my local golf courses and I love playing black gold......but only when there's about 2 hours until sundown I'll start my round. The pace of play here is well below average. The staff, facilities and food is some of the best around the OC golf courses. I like to practice here a lot because of the nice chipping areas, putting greens and natural grass range. The course is kept up well especially if you take into account the drought. I do think they overcharge here for the rounds, not the cheapest especially with the pace of play of the players on this course. A great golf course but has been plagued by slow pace of play and careless golfers who don't fix their divots or ball marks on the greens and in the fairways.
Black Gold is A Great Golf Course
Hadn't been here in a few years and snagged a great deal on Golf Now. The course continues to be challenging yet fun. Pace of play was great - no one held us up and no one was behind either. In spite of the drought the course was green and lush
And the greens in great shape and rolled real true. Thanks.
Fun course with a lot of challenges.
If you aren't an accurate golfer, you may need a more than a sleeve of balls. The course isn't too tight, but when you miss the natural habitat is marked with rattle snake and cactus signs. I enjoyed the course and felt like it was a nice combination of hills and valleys. I would absolutely play here again.
Overall course condition great
Cant complain, the course was in good condition with one exception not towards the course but towards people who dont believe they dont know how to fix their divots or perhaps just to lazy to do the right thing. These are the kinds of pathetic golfers who lower the playing conditions to their standards, just saying dont be lazy people
Fun course
Very fun course. Got a really good price on a tee time so played. Very challenging back nine. Lots of elevation changes. Course was in pretty good condition considering the drought were having. Overall I would definitely like to play here again.
Amazing hillside course
We got on to this course for $57 which is an amazing price. There was nobody in front of us and a 2some 12-15 minutes behind us. The course was in great shape, even in the early afternoon. Beautiful grounds with challenging par 3's and some huge par 5's. Great course!!!
Water shortage obvious
The course was in good shape considering the water shortage problem in the area and the heat. Can't complain really. Greens were in good shape overall fairways were needing water with lots of bare spots.
Still a good round with pace not bad and a great day. This is not an easy course but if you can hit is straight is fun.
Not a bad course
The overall course condition was good and green. The greens in particular were in excellent shaped and rolled really well.
I do not think the course was worth the $80 dollars I paid. It was a good course but in my opinion not a stand out course that can demand higher fees. The course was very hilly. A lot of hitting down and then hitting up. I would not want to play this type of course on a routine basic. Every now and then is ok.
I liked the course but due to the price I will not play it again any soon unless I get a great deal on GolfNow.
Beautiful
Excellently maintained with great staff. We played on a Thursday afternoon so it was not too busy. But there are consecutive par threes on the front nine which I would imagine will make the pace slow on the weekend. Lots of elevation changes and undulating fairways making for difficult shots even with quality shots off the tee. Overall a very difficult course that feels short but plays long due to the elevation.
Great Track!
This course was hands down the best course I've played in or around LA. Lot's of tricky shots into (well-maintained) bunker lined fairways and tough greens that demand good reads and even better speed control. The greens were more firm and rolled truer than most of the other course I've played in the LA/OC area. The staff were really knowledgeable/friendly and even mentioned some other courses I should check out since I'm on a mission to play new courses all the time. Overall this course is really good. I'll be back soon!
Over rated
Golf course is ok, but way over priced and they think they are one of the best courses around. Not true. Average at best. But many golfers pay the price and then say its the best. Dont be fooled. Starters, and pro shop say wide open. Then u find out tournaments and over booking equal slow pace of play. Reasonable for residents, but dont travel to play here. Leave it for locals, for some reason they love it. Very disappointing. There are much better courses for less money and better pace of play.
Driver not required...
I found this course to be one that you can leave the driver in the bag. Course is in excellent condition and mostly green concidering there is a drought. The course is a bit pricey, but it is a good layout. I played on a Sunday and I was surprised on how few people there were. I played 18 holes in just a little over 3 hours and I didnt catch up to anyone until I reached the 10th hole. I love the par 5 18th hole. If you can hit the driver straight then you are left with the decision of going for it in 2, but beware if the flagstick is on the right side of the green then you are looking at a green well protected by water. With the clubhouse and a waterfall in the background the 18th is a beautiful finishing hole.
Black Gold Golf Course
Arrived early and took advantage of their driving range, chipping area, and putting greens. The personnel here are very friendly. The course is in excellent condition and its challenges are some hills with blind spots and fast but true greens. The blue tees play 6400 and whites 6000. Looking forward to playing here again.
Great greens
Course is in great shape. Greens were beautiful and rolled true. Had a great time
Great Layout
Greens were fantastic, challenging course you have to play smart and not pull driver every hole. Hit the extra club on the elevated holes even if you think you can make it.....Everything was great the only improvement would be the golf shop personnel. Very transactional not very friendly just wanted to complete the transaction unfortunately its your first impression the rest of the staff was very engaged and friendly.
