Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Ok but much better options around

We got paired with a couple of hacks so that made the experience a little less enjoyable but the course was not the best. The fairways are in rough shape and some of them had very little to no flat ground. There are a ton of blind shots throughout the course and the greens have a lot of large breaks in them. If you played here every week I'm sure its a great course but if you're a visiting golfer like I was, it was a frustrating 18 holes.

Nice course, good pace

It is a nice course, a bit far away from me but worth it to try a new course out especially since it was under $100. I'm glad I played but I do wish it was a little cheaper considering a few condition issues out there. Had a great time with my 3 other friends and would love to come back again! The pace was great, didn't see anyone in front of us or behind us the whole time and we took our time! (Started at 8am on a Friday). Enjoy Black Gold and make some birdies!!

Great course but...

Perfect course condition, weather and friendly golf staff. I would have given the overall rating an "Excellent" except for the following: 1) the unnecessary slow play made it a long round (5+ hours). The group ahead of us played sooo slow we waited on every hole (most of the time they were at least 1-1/2 holes behind the group ahead of them). The marshal mentioned that the groups ahead of them were also slow but what we saw was that the group ahead of us didn't tee off until the group ahead of them were off the green (on par 4/5 holes!!!); 2) Slow service on the 19th hole. Sitting outside patio we waited for table service and finally had to go inside the restaurant to ask for service (there were 3 service people without any inside patrons). After 1 round of drinks and without any further service we paid and left!!!

Great Value for the money

we got in a late round at a steep discount. We ended up playing 14 holes because it started getting dark. The facilities and course itself were in great shape. I'm not sure if I'd want to pay the $80+ it would cost to play at a normal time. Great course all around though

Condition

Played the course 2 years ago and it was in much better shape. Fairways and entries were in bad shape, probably due to a lot of play. Greens were slower and recovering still from a punch, overall not to bad. The layout of the course is great and it gets tougher on the back. We got a hot deal to play this at 45$ which is a good value, staff was friendly and got us off early. Round took 5 plus hours and we waited almost every shot, so pace was slow. At 45$ I would go back but any more I would have to pass

Don't do it!

I booked my time on Golf Now which does not tell you they have a tournament or not. Then when you check in the basically scold you for not calling them directly. By the way golf now a lot of courses do this? " see if you would have called us you would have known we had a tourney going."
Well they said you can either go now, no warm up nothing and start on the back nine or leave? What a disaster, I playrd the back nine made the turn to find 3 groups still on one!!!
The course is just to hilly, hit it 250 down the middle only to get punished with a bully goat lie to a blind shot. Greens are close to impossible to read due to layout. Way too many blind shots, just not a fun track. Thanks but no thanks I'll stay at Tijeras Creek. Cost to much!!! Not even worth $50.
Gps system is way off on most holes when checked with my Bushnell?

What a joke......

I'm so astounded at the fact that this course still gets away with $85-$125 per round. Theres nothing that gets to me more than over priced Orange County golf. I dont know why I still bother, but when I saw rounds for $56 I thought maybe they came to thier senses. Of course thinking this is too good to be true, i searched golf now as well as black golds website to see if they were aerating or something else, but of course not a word. I still dont know why I was shocked when we got to the pro shop and of course, they just punched the greens 3 days prior. When I asked the gentleman why there was nothing posted, his reply was simply, "Why do you think it was so cheap?" These are the reasons why I havent played this course in years, and probably wont play again. Not to mentions the fairways were patchy and the golf course was overall in the worst condition ive ever seen. If it wasnt for the friendly cart girls and bar staffs the whole round would have been a complete bust. Just a diappointing day at what is supposed to be a premiere Orange County golf course. I would suggest driving the extra 20 minutes and playing some of the fun and cost friendly Inland Empire courses.

Nice Layout - excellent staff

My only issue was the condition of the fairways and tee boxes. Not sure if what we played is normal for March in SoCal but was expecting a little more considering the price of the round.

No Service = Bad Day and Bad Pace of Play

We arrived at the course, and there were exactly 0 staff outside to take care of our bags. No matter, we unloaded and parked our car. We went in and paid, and then looked for a cart.

No carts... Great. We had to go tell the pro shop staff that there were no carts, and we ended up hoofing our clubs over to the range, which charged for range balls.

Ok, let's go hit some range balls. That's about average. No worries. The only person that was friendly was the starter, and he explained the course history and some tips.

Ok. Now for golf.

Pace of play was fair on the front nine, even though we started our 1:26 tee time at 1:40. Shouldn't be a problem, right?

Nope.

Service: We saw the cart girl once, on the 3rd hole. It was 2PM. We never saw her again.

Pace of play backed up 2x on the front with 3 groups on a single shot- 2 on the tee box, and 1 in the fairway. Same on a par 3.

Moving to the back-

Snack bar was not open on a Sunday at 3:50PM. Weekend golf, and they are closed. Awesome. Still no cart girl- and we never saw anyone else all day.

Pace of play-

We called 4 times for assistance using their built in GPS system... On the 12th hole we waited 20 minutes to tee off! We never saw a course marshall, and pace of play fell from 2:10 on the front 9, to over 3:25 not the back Nine...

We had to leave to make a dinner reservation, and we were running out of light. So we paid $180 to golf 16 holes in 5 hours.

The bottom line: no service (can't even say if it was good or bad!) and no one controlling the pace of play.

There's no excuse for that as GPS shows where carts are on the course... so they can easliy go address all the groups holding everyone up! What a joke... seriously- no one cares about paying customers out there. We obviously will never set foot on that property again.

Oh, and conditions were poor for a mid-level golf course. Crab grass fairways, and lots of dead grass on tee boxes. At least the greens were good. That was about all we could say for this facility.

Great outing

It was my second time at the course. They had a tournament earlier in the day so it was a little busy when I arrived. They had the course cleared by tee time. Went off both front and back for regular tee times. Pace was excellent, was paired with 2 other sets of 2, 5 total and we played 18 in 4 hours. Even with the tournament just finishing the course was well cared for and in good shape.
