Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 09/2019.

Nestled at the base of Mount Diablo, Deer Ridge Golf Club wanders through rolling, oak-dappled hills. The course has several challenging holes but the hazards are balanced by more player-friendly elements like wide, forgiving fairways and generous greens. There is also plenty of room off the tees and at just over 6,300 yards it is a manageable length as well. Though it is gentle enough for beginners, the thoughtful routing and hilly terrain keep it interesting for low handicappers. Deer Ridge Golf Club's front nine is more open and slightly less difficult, but the back nine gets a little trickier with more trees and more dramatic elevation changes coming into play. The terrain gives each hole a unique character and different challenges. The wind can also be a major factor. Good course management will be well rewarded.

deer rI'd get conditions.

Course was not in very good condition. No marush alla to be found. Very slow play. A Marshall might have helped. Very disapointed with pace of play.

Not bad for conditions

Course itself is not terribly long, fairways and greens are still in pretty good condition despite 4 years of drought. Some holes can be challenging, and pace of play is fine. 3 hrs. 20 mins. 18 holes.
We went off at 8:00am.
It has been my experience with EVERY course I play, the earlier the better. You show up at 10, you get what you get.
Staff was very nice and accommodating.
All the courses in this area are struggling a bit due to the economy tanking and the drought.
Some great views of Mt. Diablo.
All in all, not bad.

Not a 4 1/2 hour pace

They say that there is a 4 1/2 hour pace of play, yet they only let us play for 3 hours and then kicked us off the course. When I asked the young man why we had to stop the response was very rude, he stated that they were closed and that we should have known. Considering that this was the same kid that checked us in at the pro shop I would have thought he would have mentioned this before we started our round, not in the middle of it. The course is fun and has challenging holes. Did not have a chance to try the food because even though there was people in the kitchen and behind the bar they wouldn't even make us drinks. So all in all its a good course but the staff could use some help.

Customer service lacking.

Will not return to play this course. No driving range. 95 degree temp and cafe was closed during the day so no lunch, no beverage cart, and $3.50 for a Gatorade in the pro shop!
Sorry guys- the course is not exciting enough to warrant another disappointment.

This used to be a really nice course

Played here June 16, 2015 and the conditions were much worse than the last time I played here. Maybe it's the drought, but the greens & fairways are dry and hard. The greens are poorly maintained with bare soil showing through on some of them. It's sister course, Shadow Lakes is a much nicer course for the same amount of money and it's just across the street. I like the layout and elevation changes to this course, so I hope they can get the course maintenance "up to par" soon.

Pace of Play was unusually slow

Pace of play today was unusually slow - took 6 hours to complete 18 holes. Understand it was a Saturday but 6 hours not acceptable. Think management should speed up a few of the slow 4-somes. The par 3 nbr 3 hole is long and tough (with the wind) for weekend golfers. We were one of the four 4somes waiting at the nbr 3 hole T-box, that tells you how bad the backup was. One suggestion made to the course staff (may be he is the manager) at the T-box was to eliminate the bunker at the far right and move the green 20-30 feet toward the left to make the hole a bit friendlier.

Plenty of Wind

There was plenty of wind the day we played. It added to the challenges of the course. There are many hidden areas crossing fairways that you want to avoid. There are also plenty of forced carries. The bunkers were is fairly good shape and easy to play. The pace of play for a foursome was great. Very little waiting.

Some of the pin placements were challenging. One par 3 playing into the wind had the pin placed such that putting up hill to the pin from ten feet and coming up 6 inches short resulted in the ball rolling back to where I started. This isn’t the U.S. Open!

Otherwise, a fun day. It helps to play this course a few times to get the lay of the land. There are nice views looking down onto the Delta.

Needs a Good Marshall and some TLC

Let me first start off by saying this was a 6.5 hour round!?! Where was the Marshall???? We saw him on the 2nd hole and didn't see him again for the remainder of the day. Both carts died during the round. They brought new carts out right away and were very friendly and saying how the Marshall was going to fix the pace of play but never did anything. A guy golfing with me had time to go get a cigar at the 711 down the street and return and still had to wait another 10 min around the turn to tee off on the 10th. We waited approximately 10-15 min to tee off each hole. The course conditions were disappointing after reading all the great reviews. Sand traps were just horrible with water in the center of them. Greens were ok at best, fairways were just ok. If your looking to play a nice course this is not the one. Our group traveled about an hour to get there and we were all very disappointed. We will not return to this course.

Nice features

Played this course for the first time, very fun course. Lots of traps, some water and some places you need to carry. For not knowing the course I played very well. One problem, a couple of groups met up to form a 5-some and didn't let me play through. I informed the club house later about this as there wasn't a marshall out patrolling the area. I met up with another single and he said a couple of them were regulars. I will play this course again.
