About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 09/2019.
Nestled at the base of Mount Diablo, Deer Ridge Golf Club wanders through rolling, oak-dappled hills. The course has several challenging holes but the hazards are balanced by more player-friendly elements like wide, forgiving fairways and generous greens. There is also plenty of room off the tees and at just over 6,300 yards it is a manageable length as well. Though it is gentle enough for beginners, the thoughtful routing and hilly terrain keep it interesting for low handicappers. Deer Ridge Golf Club's front nine is more open and slightly less difficult, but the back nine gets a little trickier with more trees and more dramatic elevation changes coming into play. The terrain gives each hole a unique character and different challenges. The wind can also be a major factor. Good course management will be well rewarded.

Deer Ridge Re-Boot
I have played Deer Ridge for the past few years quite regularly, nearly every Saturday in the Spring/Summer 2014. The staff was always friendly and course was always in pretty good condition no matter what weather conditions prevailed. But toward the end of last year they changed management, and I didn't feel like I was "welcome" as much and the course went down a little bit. I had always payed a little bit more for that course, usually finding a value deal on GolfNow. But the prices are a bit higher now (even with GolfNow specials) than some of the other courses in the area, and the value proposition made them a better choice. That being said, the course was in very nice shape even with the greens being recently plugged and sanded (I believe they said it was 3-4 weeks ago). I really enjoyed the experience and had a very good time. Deer Ridge is always on my list of top places to play in the area!
Avoid
Thee course was in terrible condition, aeration holes everywhere with no prior warning, dried out, dead grass everywhere, and sand everywhere but the traps. The pace of play was the worst though, took over 5 hours for my friend and i to play.
The staff was somewhat friendly but not helpful at all. The ranger just drove around not saying a word to us or stopping to see if we were satisfied/if there was anything we needed/to explain the slow play, so no help there.
The food was ok and the restaurant staff was friendly, but that was the highlight of the trip which is pathetic. Avoid at all costs unless you want a sub-par muffin from the grill.
Ridiculously Pins
14 of 18 pins were within 8 ft of edge and on top of that some on severe slops. They don't even do that at the US Open and Masters. Bozo the clown golf at its best (or worst as you may look at it).
Great condition & fast play...
4.5 hours... Great weather and course condition!!!
Great Round!!!
Early tee time. Pace of play was very good, weather was even better. Very nice leisurely day. I will play this course again.
Nice day
Nice track. Lot's of room in most fairways. Grass a little long (I'm guessing tolet it grow). Some reminders that way of states where they have some water. Greens were great. Aerated some time ago, but sanded and rolled. They putt true and somewhat fast. But you have to take it very high to stop the ball. As you sometimes do, met a very enjoyable family, and had a great day.
I like the links layout.
Great Value but it needs some TLC. Practice facility not in very good condition with 1/2 of it not available
Fun Course
Played here for the first time last weekend with my girlfriend. We had an overall good experience and ended up having a fun round. The course had some areas where the greens and fairways could of been in better condition and they could of had better signs at each hole designating yardage from each tee that would of been nice for first timers like us. We would play here again and rcommend it to others, but we agreed that there were other courses in the area that are in better shape with similar tee time prices that we prefer.
Definitely A Championship Course
Reading the greens. This is the key to make good score
For a fun round of golf
Overall course was in great shape. The greens are in great shape as well rolling about a 12. nice job Deer Ridge.
Good course, bad rep
I had read that this course had a rude staff with no practice range. Also course conditions were questionable at times. Staff was helpful and courteous. No practice range but putting and chipping greens. Course conditions were as good as anywhere I've played. Greens were fine. I liked the place and I come from San Jose.
deer ridge...price gone up...course gone down
Course is not what it use to be....greens are rough and some fairways are missing large areas of grass....green fees have gone up but course does not reflect increase in price.
For Feb, it has a great condition
Course is in great shape. Practice area is good but no driving range. Last few holes are picturesque. Play was slow but it was Prez Day afternoon. Would play again.
Great greens, Great fun!
First time playing this course for me and my gf. Perfect weather, pace of play and excellent course conditions. Teed off at 11:30 am and got done at 3:40 pm. Not a difficult course but a good test for all skill levels. The front nine is easier than the back. Greens run pretty smooth and true. Finished a couple under but left a few strokes out there. Would definitely come back here.
Great Day
Course was in great condition on almost every hole, #10 was kind of rough, but not too bad.
Staff friendly.
Not long, but many interesting holes
Under 6K from the blues, but still a challenge. Club selection off the tee, especially when the wind is blowing, is key.
Deer Ridge - Not A Pretty Picture!
I don't do a lot of reviews when it's negative, but this course used to be in pretty good shape - there needs to be a lot of work everywhere on the course to get it back in a quality playing condition. I don't enjoy spending 30-45 minutes driving to a course and finding it in this rough of a condition. Carts are on their last leg, fairways, traps, greens, you name it, there is a whole lot of work that needs to be done before I'll consider going back to this course - their sister course (Shadow Lakes) has the same problems - I'm sure it's lack of funds, quality of greenkeepers, and the list goes on and on. Not planning anymore trips to these courses until I hear some good feedback on improved playing conditions - very disappointing at any price! Dave Kern
Extreme Slow Play
Over 3 hours to play the front nine & over 6 total. Our tee time was at 11:14am on a Saturday & we teed off on time (off to a good start). It was a really nice day & I was kind off expecting a slowish round, but not to the extent I received. There was a marshal running about & he said he was trying to get people moving, but it didn't appear to be working. At least I hope not being that we were moving at a snail's pace. At the turn we went into the pro shop & asked if they would give us a rain check for another day since there was obviously some problems out there getting people moving. We explained nicely that we started at 11:14am, it was now 2:30pm & they refused to do that. They did offer to play the front 9 again as they said it should be moving faster than it was earlier. I hadn't played the course for a couple of years & let them know that was not acceptable. I paid for 18 different holes, not the same front ones twice. With no better option offered, we went out a began playing the back nine hoping it would be a little faster. It was, but only by about 5 minutes. Grrrr! 6.25+ hours to play a round is unacceptable. One thing they didn't know is that I book tournaments for an NCGA club & while I was there for some fun, I was also checking out the course to see what kind of shape it was in. The last time I was out there, it was not in great shape. I remembered the 10th hole was a disaster area & a few others were not far behind. The course was in better shape this time, but after that experience, they will not be getting any business from me or our club for at least another couple of years.
Go elsewhere
Despite good weather, tees times were back-up 15 minutes. We did not get our cart until it was time to tee off. Our playing partners didn't get a cart, (none available) so they walked. Staff were not accommodating nor did they explain any of this. 2 hrs. 45 min. to play 9 nine holes, no marshal on the course. Some holes 3 groups were at the tee box. I'm done with deer ridge.
