Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Great time at Old Hick
Was a hot day and the weather's been crazy but the course was in great shape except for occasional bunker still having water due to rain. Otherwise, course and staff were fantastic and made the experience great on an otherwise blistering hot day. Ran into the course pro and superintendent at pro shop and both were approachable people who showed us around. Thanks for a great Friday of golf!
Nice track
I played this course at 7:52 on Sunday morning. It was a hot day and the tons of rain we've had only slightly affected play. I was paired up with some guys who wanted to play from the gold tees, which I usually wouldn't have played by myself. Regardless, I put together a nice round. I found myself thinking a lot on this course. You have to play course management or you can really get into trouble. I only pulled driver five times off the tee. Bunkers are strategically placed in the fairway and around the greens so you have to be aware of your safe misses. We didn't know it, but it turned out to be the club championship that morning, so the pins were TOUGH. Most were tucked away in a far corner or on a ridge, making it quite challenging. I'd like to see their normal pin placements. The fairway is zoysia which kept the ball propped up like it was on a tee. It was joy to hit from, both on full shots and chips and pitches. The greens were very fast. They were a little burnt up in places, but it never affected roll. Overall, it's a beautiful course in great condition and I'll definitely be back.
Course in pretty bad shape
I understand that we have had a lot of rain over the past couple weeks but I was not expecting the course to be in this bad of shape. Grass over grown pretty much throughout the course. Tee boxes either non existent or weed everywhere. This course is on par with how bad VA Oaks was before they went under....
stay away from this course.
Meh...
Course has a lot of overgrown areas and bunkers are in bad shape. A lot of players do not rake leaving deep foot prints and sand divots. Several ball marks on the putting greens. Practice area was in horrible shape and very muddy. This course “was” a ver well kept and great place to play but it seems to have had its time.
#18... Yikes!
I really like this course... Until #18. 600+ par 5. Off the tee: dead left, dead long straight, dead right. A fade off the tee is the safe shot. The next shot is a lay up to a narrow landing area with dead left & dead right. Your approach shot is a long/mid iron to an elevated, sliver of a green with dead short, dead left, dead long. The only bail out is right. You can have a really great round going until the last hole. Its a PGA tour level par 5.
I like this place!
The course was in really good shape, the greens were a bit slower than normal but still at a good pace. Rolled very true. Fairways were great. A few bunker need some love but the course played really fun.
Staff is always great, new golf carts, great pace of play.
I'll be back soon!
Bad green and fairway
The green is bad shape and the fairway is not ideal. Depending on the price you can get, I don’t recommend paying this course at this moment unless you get get a tee time for under 35 dollars.
Great layout, greens still healing
First time playing, great track but greens still a bit bumpy and thin in places (could likely benefit from another tine and some sand actually but doubt they want to punch again as a public course in mid May). The range is terrible but the course layout is very good and overall decent value. Rough thin in places around greens so can get into some almost unhittable spots just a few yards off and bunkers could use sand and edging but pretty much what you expect at this price point. Played gold tees as a scratch and would have preferred a mix of gold and tips as some of the tees were up so played less that 6600.
Solid layout, not so solid other things
Great layout, never great conditions. Considering what they charge on the weekend, the conditions are crap. Awful greens that will never recover from aeration, sand traps are a joke, tee boxes patchy, fairways shaggy. I have no idea where the money goes. And the ranger thinks a 5 hr round on a Saturday is the standard. It doesn't matter if I'm a twosome, a 5hr+ round is a 5hr+ round. Don't tell me I should have played at 6am if I wanted a good speed of round. This course is a 5 of 10 when it should be a 9.
Great layout and fun, challenging course
This is a fun yet challenging course to play!! A number of really good golf holes. I like the elevated tees and greens ... played from the gold tees at about 6,600 yards. Greens were aerated a few weeks ago but should be in great condition by mid-May
Some warning would be nice.
This is a nice track with good facilities and great staff. My only gripe is not knowing ahead of time that the greens had been aerated and were quite rough. They had also suffered from recent heavy rains but had managed that pretty well.
I will definitely go back, just would have appreciated the courtesy of fore warning about the greens when committing to the course for that round.
Punched greens and full price green fees should never mix
This course could have been a joy to play had it not been for the bone dry aerified greens that had absolutely no top dressing. It is also unconscionable for a course to charge full peak rates in this condition. I would not have even made the tee time had there been a warning about the punched greens.
Nice course
Great pace, course decent except several bunkers need attention, enjoyed the round.
One of the Best Courses
Old Hickory is one of the better courses I play on a regular basis. Once or twice during Spring/Summer and also Fall/Winter. The fees are a little higher than the rates we pay at our home course. But in the foursome I play with we think it's worth it. We treat ourselves to Old Hickory whenever We can. We play somewhere every Saturday of the year weather permitting. There was a lot of rain the week before we played so it was cart path only. But other than that the course was in good condition as they always keep it in shape.
