Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Old Hickory Review
I played Old Hickory during the week when I thought everyone else would be at work and found the course was having a charity tournament. In spite of the shotgun tournament, the starter was able to put me in a group with 3 other golfers not involved in the event and we played at a pleasurable pace. The course was in good shape, and the greens were fairly quick. The driving range though is in need of a total makeover. Many of the range balls are cracked, the range is only of sufficient length to hit your irons (5 iron or below) and you have to hit your woods into a net that is only 10 yards in front of you (and torn at that). Other than the driving range, I would highly recommend this course to any serious golfer.
Repeat Yes
Course was fun but we got behind a slow two some and waited on most shots. Greens looked good and rolled well but someone was scuffing their shoes and really tearing the greens around the hole. The priority was greens and bunkers but there was some deferred maintain in other spots. Pro shop was very professional and friendly.
never a bad time
I've been playing at Old Hickory for years. Still one of my favorites in the DC area. Please keep in mind that the following refer to a round played in mid October:
+ The course layout is excellent - good design, very few blind shots, challenging but fair.
+ The greens rolled well.
+ Fairways in generally good condition.
- The sand was not up the usual standards.
- Marshals could have enforced better pace of play.
During summer months, you might encounter slower pace of play on a weekend; might have some tee boxes that are chewed up a bit. But Old Hickory is never a bad option.
Only play here if you don't have another options...
Course layout was great and challenging... However, it was in terrible condition for the middle of the season. Greens were horrible, fairways had significant water damage, and looked like they hadn't been treated in 2 years (like my lawn). All of the above is excusable. What wasn't was the total disregard of the grounds crew to players on the course. We were told to expect the crew to be on the course, which would normally not be a big deal. Except for the fact that while we respected the job they had to do, (not hit into them, wait for them to finish, etc.). They had no respect for our play. Driving lawn mowers/carts right behind us while we're hitting. The worst was this kid moving the pins on every green. He would literally take down the flag right as we were about to make our approach shot, take 5-10 minutes to put a new hole in (which it looked like he used a spade to do), then every other hole, would race by us while we're on the tee box, and repeat for the entire back 9. We actually skipped a hole to try to get in-front of him, but to no avail... We weren't playing slow either (2.5 hrs for 18). We won't be back.
Great Conditions
The conditions of the greens and fairways were awesome considering the desert like summer. The greens rolled true and fast and the fairways and rough were green and lush. People need to learn to fix ball marks, divots and play faster. That goes for any and all courses. And if there is a group waiting to tee off behind you and watch you have to hit three of the tee to get one in play you need to be on the range taking a lesson, not holding up a whole golf course. Other than that rant I went on the course is one of the best in the area right now.
Great day
My son and I joined up with 2 members. It was a great day on an excellent golf course. I have played here before and have always enjoyed it. Watch out for the 18th. It's tough but fair.
Slow back up old hickory
They should get an award for slow play.
Plan on 5 to. 6 hours and wAits of 15 minutes each tee. Only reason they have golf now hot deals is because u can't finish a round for the ttime of deal. Adequate course. Don't give accurate info on phone about outings. Just in it for money.
No Marshall. Don't go here. Not worth high prices
Slow play
Too slow on a week day in sept. 5 hours.
3rd time like that this summer. One time 6 hours all weekday pm. Course is good average condition given heat.
No marshals for slow 4 some s
Last minute round
Gorgeous weather for a round, some minor complaints include flat tire on the cart, abundance of divot or ball marks on the respective fairways and greens, very hard rough just off of the second cut. Otherwise, very good challenging course to play w/ narrow fairways and elevation changes.
What a day!
Given the recent weather over the past several weeks I was pleasantly surprised at the course conditions. The greens were very nice, the fairways as well save a few isolated spots.
Pace of place was great, the grille staff very cordial.
Cannot wait to play again!
Good layout, needs some TLC
Played this course couple of years ago and was in very good shape. Loved it! Played 9/5/16 and course upkeep seemed neglected. The summer heat has burned a lot of areas. Course needs manicuring ASAP. SUCH a NICE layout, SUCH a shame the course is not kept in better shape. I hope they can restore it because the track has great bones.
Love Old Hickory but....
I usually get the chance to play Old Hickory once a year and I am excited the week leading up to this round every year. My excitement quickly turned to disappointment. I arrived one hour early and checked in with no issues. I wanted to hit the range and practice green before the round but the starter told me there weren't any carts available. The range and practice green are down the road by the first hole. I wasn't going to walk down there with my clubs and walk all the way back to get a cart. I wait until there was a cart available and only had time to hit five balls and a few putts. The driving range looked horrible anyway. The driving net was torn and made no sense even being up and the mats were not easy to hit off of. The only things good about my round were the greens and my score. The tee boxes were beat up and brown. The fairways were not consistent; either dry with dead grass or soggy. and muddy. Going to strongly reconsider going somewhere else when it is time to play Old Hickory next year.
Heat Ruined Course
Still a great course but the summer heat really did this course.
This course was in poor condition
I called the course to ask the condition and was told" it was in great shape".
Not true...many of the fairways and tee boxes were in poor condition. I have played this course a lot and was surprised to see it in this condition.
Great Public Course but needs some TLC
This course has the potential to be one of the best in the DC area. It is obvious from the divots and damage on the greens that this course gets a lot of business. Just expect some rough spots. If they shut down for one day a week, they could probably keep some better conditions in play. Course has a good layout, and the fairways are designed to keep you in play. The only thing that keeps coming back to this course is the driving range....or lack of a real driving range. You'll hit balls of an old mat into a net. Land is tight so I understand their restrictions, but how about a net 150-200 yards out instead of 25-50? They have the room. Regardless, play this course. Its worth it.
Nice course for the $$$
The done fairways are a little beat up but the greens are in good shape.
Great Day of Golf
I saw a great rate on GolfNow for this course and gave it a try. The course had a tourny that was half way threw so the first two holes were really backed up. A staff member suggested I start at the back nine that was empty. I ended up doing 18 holes in three hours and had a great day. THANKS Old Hickory !!!
WAKE UP MAINTENANCE CREW!
Very disappointed in the condition of this course after all the hype. Both players that I played with mentioned one month ago it was in phenomenal condition. The whole grounds crew must have all taken a one month vacation because the greens were extremely slow and chewed up. It reminded me of a green in the middle of a driving range, peppered with ball marks and just left alone. I would also rate the fairways 3 out of 10. DO NOT LET THE 4 STARS FOOL YOU. SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Extreme summer heat has TORCHED the course.
First time playing, the summer heat has the course in terrible shape. The greens are BEAT up very badly!! I take in consideration that weather has played a major factor on the course, but to try and charge $70 plus dollars is a slap in the face to any golfer. I of course used the golfnow discount and paid $35. If you cannot keep up with your course charge accordingly. Sorry but not sorry for my opinion on your course and my experience. Several members we spoke with had the same feelings.
Course needs some love
This was my first time playing this course and I had gotten mixed reviews from others before deciding to play it. Not that it matters, but it was a brutally hot and humid day...I mention that only because I think they need to have more drinking water on the course.
I loved the layout of the course. Lots of changes in elevation from tee to green and undulation on the fairways and greens. Very picturesque tree-lined fairways...this course would be awesome during the autumn change. Bring your A game when playing the bunkers...they use a heavier sand than most of the other area courses I've played and the bunkers themselves are deep and found myself opting for the Lob wedge rather than the Sand wedge because of it. The fairways will also challenge your iron play skills and if you like flat lies, you should probably play another course...lol...but I loved it. Greens were not super fast, but they rolled true.
As the title states, the course needs some love from the maintenance and aesthetics side of things. Many of the fairways are riddled with divot marks that have not been attended to as were the tee boxes. The bunkers are also very unkempt and shabby looking. I also found that those who are playing the course don't give it any love either. There were a lot of bunkers that players didn't bother to rake after hitting shots and I have never seen so many divot marks on the greens that were not repaired either...I would call this poor golf etiquette and shame on you weekend warriors for falling short.
I will go back and play it again because I love the layout...I just hope that everyone would give this course the love it deserves.
