Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Accuracy is key
A shot maker's dream, Old Hickory plays short but for all the right reasons. Carving through a housing community, the greens are quick but the layout is fun and challenging. Playing in late fall was tough considering all the leaves you could lose your ball in (even in the fairways), but if you can keep it relatively straight off the tee you'll enjoy. Pace of play was my only criticism, but that's what I get for playing it on a Sunday.
Club house staff all elitist
Club house staff are all arrogant and stuck up.they always look like they have the newest stuff and renovations in the clubhouse, and talking to the maintance crew(which are cool) they are underpaid and they drive all very old equipment which i imagine isnt good for the course.they act like people go tyere to sit at clubhouse and eat overpriced food that isnt even good.good course, could be better.clubhouse terrable.
Challenging in the fall
Course was in good condition but green complexes are too challenging for regular golfers in the dryer fall weather. Most greens are either elevated or below the fairways and multi-leveled. Nearly impossible for most players to stick when running fast.
Pace Of Play
I have played the course several times this year. My consistent complaint is pace of play. Each time I've played here, it has taken over 4.5 hours to play although we were riding with the 90-degree cart rule in effect. Be prepared for frequent hit-and-waits. Other than that I really enjoy the course. I must admit that I have passed up on Old Hickory at least 10 to 15 times because of the pace of play. I really wish management would pay more attention to this issue.
Upscale?
The mid atlantic area suffered a brutal heatwave this year and all courses endured some damage. However all of the courses I play have rebounded except for one, Old Hickory. The fairways and areas around the green were borderline unplayable. I will admit the greens were in good shape surprising but that was the only saving grace. The patchwork attempts with different kinds of grasses looks like the work of an apprentice greenskeeper. It also appears that the lack of attention to detail goes further stll, no balls on the driving range, no starter.
I book tee times for 8 to 12 guys every weekend and we play a lot of golf in prince william county. We will continue to play Forest Greens, Bristow, Stonewall and yes even Prince William.
Upscale, I think not.
Great Fall Golf
Call it what it is, mid November Golf... that was pretty awesome. The fairways are in great shape and if you have to find a ball in the rough and in some of the leaves, that's what happens when you hit in there in Oct. and Nov. That being said... they do a great job of keeping the secondary cut clear. Thought the greens were in great shape and the bunkers were very solid for this time of year. Really good price point, Old Hickory does it well. One of my favorite tracks for a reason.
Fun course but play the correct tees!
If it wasn't for the pace of play, I would have given this 5 stars. What a great Golf Course and if you haven't played here yet make sure you do! The course is in fantastic condition! The greens are extremely fast, true, and undulated! I'm not from the area and I was paired up with a threesome. They were incredibly nice guys, also incredibly slow. The round took 5 hours and 15 minutes and we constantly had people on our tail. What was even stranger, was the fact that we were keeping up with the foursome in front of us and had to wait on them as well. And they were keeping up with the other foursomes . The only thing I could think of is that people are not playing from the correct tees! In turn I could not get into a rhythm at all and shot the worst round that I've had in years. Can't wait to get back to this course for some Revenge!
Good deal
I play here often, course is nice, practice facility is nice, pace of play is good and would recommend the course to anyone.
Challenging, but Fair Course
This course is well designed as it loops through some very nice houses. Although the course is fairly narrow in many places, it offers reasonable chances of making par, (especially from the fairly short white tees). Longer holes had some tough fairway and green bunkers. We played on a beautiful Fall day that also brought out more players. Pace was a little slow for our twosome, but the course marshall was by frequently and did what he could to expedite. We finished in about 4hr 30min. Overall, very nice course and especially good value with the GolfNow deal. Only knock I have is the set up of the driving range (hitting driver into a net and you can't drive cart to the range. Boo).
A great golf experience.
Wonderful golf course that provides adequate hitting areas in fairways with true greens that can be read. Tee boxes need improvement in some areas and the driving range leaves much to be desired. Cannot use driver to verify distance and direction. Must hit into a net with longer clubs. Overall, a good experience and the course layout is great.
Old Hickory Review
I played Old Hickory during the week when I thought everyone else would be at work and found the course was having a charity tournament. In spite of the shotgun tournament, the starter was able to put me in a group with 3 other golfers not involved in the event and we played at a pleasurable pace. The course was in good shape, and the greens were fairly quick. The driving range though is in need of a total makeover. Many of the range balls are cracked, the range is only of sufficient length to hit your irons (5 iron or below) and you have to hit your woods into a net that is only 10 yards in front of you (and torn at that). Other than the driving range, I would highly recommend this course to any serious golfer.
Repeat Yes
Course was fun but we got behind a slow two some and waited on most shots. Greens looked good and rolled well but someone was scuffing their shoes and really tearing the greens around the hole. The priority was greens and bunkers but there was some deferred maintain in other spots. Pro shop was very professional and friendly.
never a bad time
I've been playing at Old Hickory for years. Still one of my favorites in the DC area. Please keep in mind that the following refer to a round played in mid October:
+ The course layout is excellent - good design, very few blind shots, challenging but fair.
+ The greens rolled well.
+ Fairways in generally good condition.
- The sand was not up the usual standards.
- Marshals could have enforced better pace of play.
During summer months, you might encounter slower pace of play on a weekend; might have some tee boxes that are chewed up a bit. But Old Hickory is never a bad option.
Only play here if you don't have another options...
Course layout was great and challenging... However, it was in terrible condition for the middle of the season. Greens were horrible, fairways had significant water damage, and looked like they hadn't been treated in 2 years (like my lawn). All of the above is excusable. What wasn't was the total disregard of the grounds crew to players on the course. We were told to expect the crew to be on the course, which would normally not be a big deal. Except for the fact that while we respected the job they had to do, (not hit into them, wait for them to finish, etc.). They had no respect for our play. Driving lawn mowers/carts right behind us while we're hitting. The worst was this kid moving the pins on every green. He would literally take down the flag right as we were about to make our approach shot, take 5-10 minutes to put a new hole in (which it looked like he used a spade to do), then every other hole, would race by us while we're on the tee box, and repeat for the entire back 9. We actually skipped a hole to try to get in-front of him, but to no avail... We weren't playing slow either (2.5 hrs for 18). We won't be back.
Great Conditions
The conditions of the greens and fairways were awesome considering the desert like summer. The greens rolled true and fast and the fairways and rough were green and lush. People need to learn to fix ball marks, divots and play faster. That goes for any and all courses. And if there is a group waiting to tee off behind you and watch you have to hit three of the tee to get one in play you need to be on the range taking a lesson, not holding up a whole golf course. Other than that rant I went on the course is one of the best in the area right now.
Great day
My son and I joined up with 2 members. It was a great day on an excellent golf course. I have played here before and have always enjoyed it. Watch out for the 18th. It's tough but fair.
