Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Such a hidden gem

This course is top tier. I come back whenever I can. It's hard to overstate the value. It's a brilliant design and layout and the setting is simply spectacular. I've come to expect to pay more than twice the cost for this quality of golf experience. Love it!

Beautiful Day to play golf with the family

It has been a few years since I played Darkhorse. The course is still challenging but a lot of fun. Easy check-in and nice driving range/putting area. Relaxed ambiance. Greens were very fast. Cons: lack of water stations, fairways in rough condition, carts would stop moving on many holes without adequate signage or warning of no carts on holes....I spent a good deal of time driving in reverse to get out of these situations. Course seemed to be completely closed with no amenities when we finished our round at 5:00

Nice course, GPS restrictive carts are annoying!

First time playing this course with my son. He’s played here before. He warned me about the GPS carts restricting areas to drive on course. If you happen to drive in to an area or near an area that is restricted it will cut power to the cart and make you put it in reverse to get out of that area. I’ve had this before at other courses but it was overly sensitive here. This alone slowed down play and I was annoying which put me in a bad frame of mind. Right off the first hole when I about flew through the front window when it cut power to the cart when we had to drive near the rough. Anyway, other than the cart the course was fine, we played in the afternoon and it wasn’t too hot. Course was in good shape, pays to be in the fairway as the first cut is pretty thick. Be prepared to lose balls if you cannot keep it in the fairways or out of the hazards and ob; lots of thorny and thick brush. My son is just starting and went through a ton of balls. Greens are fast and most of them elevated. If you miss the greens be prepare to hit up to and climb up hills to the greens. Over all The elevation changes are pretty fun to play, reminds me of playing in the island mountian courses in the Philippines, minus the ocean of course haha. Definitely a good course just try to be prepared for the annoying carts if you are going to ride. No clubhouse to chill at, the cart girl last pass by was about 3 o’clock ish, the refreshment stand at the turn was closed by the time we made the turn. We started our round @2:10pm, but we anticipated this and had brought refreshments with us. So might want to keep that in mind and bring a cooler if playing later. Will probably play here again occasionally, but it’s a 45-50 minute drive for me from Roseville. If I lived closer would definitely be in the regular rotation. Also the range has covered “Toptracer” bays and a TV to enjoy. Good course just wished they’d turn down or even better off the restrictive GPS on the carts.

Beautiful and difficult

This course is not for beginners. It’s a very difficult mountain course with interesting and challenging, fairways and greens.

Don’t waste your money.

The fairways were in horrible shape. Patches of dirt were everywhere, including large patches in the middle of the fairway. The bunkers were not properly maintained. Will not play there again.

Beautiful gem

I've loved this course since it opened about 20 years ago. Incredible layout, gorgeous scenery, amazing value. The conditions of the fairways (and some tees) were hurting from an extremely hot 5 weeks prior, but the greens were still great. I'll keep coming back as often as possible.

Great course!

Darkhorse is a great course! Can be moderately to extremely challenging depending on which tees you play. Greens are are in good shape but fairways and bunkers need some work.

Great Course Layou

This is a fun and challenging course, probably the most technical course in the area with all of the bunkers and elevated greens. Accuracy is required to hit the greens to avoid all of the bunkers and they are plenty large enough to get on. But land in the wrong spot and your putt will have some challenging slopes to deal with. #11 is a crazy dog leg left and dog leg right, super fun.

A bit wet and poor playing conditions

With the recent heat wave it appears that many courses in the area are watering heavily to keep the grass alive, and currently Dark Horse is very wet and sloppy. I had a few balls plug in the fairway and this is August. It also appears that there may be fungus attacking the fairways killing the grass leaving dead and brown spots. If you are going to play soon I would recommend lift, clean and place to avoid these current problems. Otherwise the course layout is good and the staff are friendly. Pace of play was also good for a Saturday.

Dark Horse GC Aubrn CA -

The course is challenging with water, valleys and little streams either before greens and just after your drive - required a lay up.

The location is far from the highway, and give yourself 20 - 30 iminutes through town. I liked the course due to to a variety of holes with up and down, and hitting your drive over the downhill. If you have time to go I recommend its has a variety of fairways.

Amazing course

This course is well designed, challenging, and in a beautiful setting. I always recommend this course to friends. Only issue this round was the condition of the tee boxes. Most of them were soggy and/or muddy and all torn up. Unfortunately the tee markers were right in the middle of these areas. That said, Darkhorse is still a great golf experience.

Course conditions not up to par

I have played here many times and this was the worst conditions I have seen. Fairways have many burned out spots and they have over compensated with watering trying to fix the situation.

On the plus side, the greens were in good shape and pace of play was great. I would wait several weeks before I would play again and give the course time to recover.

Course went downhill quick, made the drive up and quickly regretted it. Fairways are dirt , greens are beat to the bone and bunkers are thrashed. I understand it's been a brutal summer but at least keep the bunkers maintained. Just seems like the course is being neglected. Such a shame because it use to be one of the best courses in Nor Cal.
