DarkHorse Golf Club
About
Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Beautiful gem
I've loved this course since it opened about 20 years ago. Incredible layout, gorgeous scenery, amazing value. The conditions of the fairways (and some tees) were hurting from an extremely hot 5 weeks prior, but the greens were still great. I'll keep coming back as often as possible.
Decline
playes course 15-20 times it is not being maintained fairways are trash and dead tee boxes not maintained… course has declined significantly not worth $90
Great course!
Darkhorse is a great course! Can be moderately to extremely challenging depending on which tees you play. Greens are are in good shape but fairways and bunkers need some work.
Great Course Layou
This is a fun and challenging course, probably the most technical course in the area with all of the bunkers and elevated greens. Accuracy is required to hit the greens to avoid all of the bunkers and they are plenty large enough to get on. But land in the wrong spot and your putt will have some challenging slopes to deal with. #11 is a crazy dog leg left and dog leg right, super fun.
A bit wet and poor playing conditions
With the recent heat wave it appears that many courses in the area are watering heavily to keep the grass alive, and currently Dark Horse is very wet and sloppy. I had a few balls plug in the fairway and this is August. It also appears that there may be fungus attacking the fairways killing the grass leaving dead and brown spots. If you are going to play soon I would recommend lift, clean and place to avoid these current problems. Otherwise the course layout is good and the staff are friendly. Pace of play was also good for a Saturday.
Dark Horse GC Aubrn CA -
The course is challenging with water, valleys and little streams either before greens and just after your drive - required a lay up.
The location is far from the highway, and give yourself 20 - 30 iminutes through town. I liked the course due to to a variety of holes with up and down, and hitting your drive over the downhill. If you have time to go I recommend its has a variety of fairways.
Like the layout
The fairways in rough condition. Too muddy and lots of bare spots.
First time
Very good course. Difficult but manageable. Very wet, trying to fight the heat. A lot of dead spots on some fairways.
Amazing course
This course is well designed, challenging, and in a beautiful setting. I always recommend this course to friends. Only issue this round was the condition of the tee boxes. Most of them were soggy and/or muddy and all torn up. Unfortunately the tee markers were right in the middle of these areas. That said, Darkhorse is still a great golf experience.
Course conditions not up to par
I have played here many times and this was the worst conditions I have seen. Fairways have many burned out spots and they have over compensated with watering trying to fix the situation.
On the plus side, the greens were in good shape and pace of play was great. I would wait several weeks before I would play again and give the course time to recover.
Course went downhill quick, made the drive up and quickly regretted it. Fairways are dirt , greens are beat to the bone and bunkers are thrashed. I understand it's been a brutal summer but at least keep the bunkers maintained. Just seems like the course is being neglected. Such a shame because it use to be one of the best courses in Nor Cal.
ROUGH SHAPE
This course is in VERY rough shape right now. I remember a few years back, it was an absolute gem. New bunkers, lush fairways… it was spectacular.
It is NOT the same course today. Dirt in fairways, mushy and over watered greens, no clubhouse or amenities… It is ROUGH. If you’re not in the area, I wouldn’t make the trip to play this course. It is a complete waste of money, and there are many other courses that are better. The Ridge is very close to this course, and a MUCH nicer course with better amenities and pricing.
Skip this place, and play somewhere worthy of your time and money.
Course not in great condition. Fairways, tee boxes very patchy. No one fixes ball marks ok greens. Course used to be in fantastic shape. Don’t know what happed. Probably won’t return this year.
Course is in rough shape
Love this course. Love the design. Love the value (free birthday round). However the course has been decimated by the heat this summer. Played here in may and it was in GREAT shape. This time, fairways were barren. Dirt, different types of grasses. On 3 holes on front was cart path only.
Still live the course. Hope they can recover it.
BEAT UP
I was disappointed with the conditions at Dark Horse. This is normally one of my favorite courses, but the greens were beat up and slow and the fairways were burnt out. Also, they need to get water stations placed on the course.
Charges
I had a threesome booked. My 2 buddies couldn’t make it. I found out later they charged me for the whole threesome. I get that that’s technically allowable when you reserve with GolfNow, but no other course I’ve ever played in the Sacramento region in 10 years has ever enforced that for any reason, and they didn’t have the courtesy to tell me about it. On top of that, the course is trashed. Fairways are horrible and the greens are loaded with pockmarks. Looks like a ghetto muni course. I will never go back there and will steer every golfer I know away from it. It’s a shame, because it used to be a gem of a course that was very well run.
